Artykuł jest propozycją powrotu do pojęć fetyszyzmu i reifikacji jako klasycznych, ale nadal aktualnych narzędzi krytycznej teorii społeczeństwa. W ramach szeroko pojętej analizy nowoczesności wskazywały one na odwrócenia, w których środek zastępuje cel, a obiektywizujące miary redukują niewspółmierne jakości. W tekście zostają zestawione koncepcje, które można uznać za źródła teorii fetyszyzmu i urzeczowienia, a także ich klasyczne i nowsze sformułowania w pracach Marksa, Lukácsa i Deborda. Wskazane w tytule pojęcia odniesione są do pracy intelektualnej, której rola we współczesnym kapitalizmie jest zarazem centralna i podporządkowana. W końcowej partii tekstu zaproponowane zostaje pojęcie intelektualisty totalnego jako kogoś, kto poprzez roszczenie do krytyki i formę swojej twórczości sprzeciwia się urzeczowieniu pracy intelektualnej i jej redukcji do działalności technicznej i zekonomizowanej.

This paper proposes a return to notions of reification and fetishism as classic but still valid tools of critical social theory. In the broad frame of analysis of modernity, these notions pointed to processes of inversion in which means were substituted for aims, and objectivistic measures were reduced to disproportionate qualities. In this text, several concepts are juxtaposed: both those that can be understood as sources for theories of fetishism and reification, and their classic and more contemporary expositions in the works of Marx, Lukács, and Debord. The author applies the notions of reification and fetishism to intellectual work, which plays a simultaneously central and subordinate role in contemporary capitalism. In the final part of the text he proposes the notion of a total intellectual: the term is meant to describe someone who objects to the reification of intellectual work and its reduction to technical and economic activity.

Ivan Lovrenović to intelektualista z Sarajewa, pisarz, publicysta, autor esejów i rozpraw na temat bośniackiej kultury i historii. Opis wybranych aspektów działalności Lovrenovicia czyni z tego tekstu studium przypadku. Autorka zadaje pytania o totalność działalności intelektualnej Ivana Lovrenovicia, ale też o pozycję intelektualisty w Bośni i Hercegowinie, ponieważ tekst jest też próbą oglądu pewnego typu działalności intelektualnej uwarunkowanej lokalnymi okolicznościami. Z tekstu wyłania się obraz Lovrenovicia występującego w imieniu interesów wspólnej, bośniackiej kultury, konsekwentnie wskazującego niebezpieczeństwa wynikające z podziału na wyłącznie chorwacki, serbski i boszniacki opis bośniacko-hercegowińskiego świata. Totalność tego intelektualisty rozpatrywana jest przez pryzmat kompleksowości jego działań skupionych wokół zrozumienia, opisania i systematycznego propagowania idei, konsekwentnej postawy protestu, ale także zaangażowania na rzecz obrony zdrowego rozsądku.

Ivan Lovrenović is an intellectual living in Sarajevo, a writer, publicist, and author of essays and treatises on Bosnian culture and history. This text is a case study describing selected aspects of Lovrenović’s output. The author not only asks questions about the whole of Lovrenović’s intellectual activities but about the position of the intellectual in Bosnia and Herzegovina. She discusses how intellectual activity is conditioned by local circumstances.Lovrenović has advocated a common Bosnian culture, consistently pointing to the danger of dividing descriptions of the Bosnian-Herzegovinan world into solely Croatian, Serbian, and Bosnian parts. Lovrenović is considered a total intellectual on account of the complexity of his activities to understand, describe, and systematically propagate that idea, his consistent attitude of protest, and also his commitment to defending common sense.

Artykuł dotyczy postaci Romana Zimanda jako badacza kultury i pisarza politycznego. Autor przedstawia życiorys badacza, analizuje jego dorobek i podejście do pracy naukowej, zastanawia się nad jego funkcjonowaniem jako intelektualisty zaangażowanego politycznie, opisuje relacje między trzema aktorami wydarzeń: Zimandem, otaczającym go środowiskiem naukowym i władzami PRL. Wreszcie stawia pytanie o zasadność używania wobec Zimanda kategorii „intelektualisty totalnego” i zastanawia się nad typowością tego przypadku dla PRL po 1956 roku.

This article is about the journalist, literary researcher, and opposition activist Roman Zimand. The author tries to answer several questions about Zimand’s life and achievements. What were his specific achievements and his approach to academic work? What role did the political context of the Polish People’s Republic play? What was the relationship between Zimand and the academic community in which he operated? To what extent can he be considered a “total intellectual”? The article begins with a brief biographical outline. Then the author focuses on presenting Zimand’s output and the specifics of his approach to academic work. The next part concerns Zimand’s political writing and the combination of his political commitment with his scholarship. Then the author discusses the relations between Zimand, the academic community, and the authorities of the Polish People’s Republic. In the last part of the article, the author considers the possibility of viewing Zimand as a “total intellectual.”
