Wspólnoty muzułmańskie na Bałkanach, w których praktyka islamu rozwijała się w środowisku europejskim, mogą posłużyć jako pomost między islamskim Wschodem i chrześcijańskim Zachodem. Oto bowiem, choć przez ponad 400 lat Bośnia znajdowała się pod władzą Osmanów, muzułmanie pozostali tylko jedną z wielu społeczności, dzieląc kraj z prawosławnymi, katolikami i niewielką wspólnotą żydowską. Historia kontaktów muzułmańsko-chrześcijańskich zawiera zarówno przykłady zderzeń, jak i spotkań, inicjowanych tak przez chrześcijan, jak i przez muzułmanów. Choć nie sposób nie dostrzec, że więcej w niej było zderzeń, nie wolno jednak przeoczyć istnienia spotkań. Artykuł ten analizuje w historycznym i współczesnym kulturowo-społecznym kontekście pogranicze wyznaniowe Bośni i Hercegowiny, wskazując na jego specyfi kę, dynamikę i (często nieudane) próby jego konceptualizacji z perspektywy europocentrycznego dyskursu.

Muslim communities in the Balkans, in which the practice of Islam developed in the European context, can be used as an exemplifi cation of the bridge between the Islamic East and the Christian West. Although for over 400 years Bosnia was under the Ottoman rule, Muslims became one of the many communities contributing to the dynamic area of ontological and axiological negotiations within the cultural borderland, sharing the living space with members of the Orthodox church, Catholics, and a small Jewish community. The history of the Muslim-Christian contacts in Bosnia includes the examples of collisions as well as encounters initiated both by Christians and Muslims. This article analyses the religious borderland in the historical and contemporary cultural and social context of Bosnia-Herzegovina, revealing its specifi city, dynamics and (often unsuccessful) attempts to conceptualize it from the perspective of the Eurocentric discourse.
