Incorrect use or omission of articles is a common phenomenon in the case of Polish-speaking learners of such languages as English and German. In the present paper I deal with this issue in the context of third language acquisition, i.e. I conduct an analysis of article errors made by Polish-speaking students of Ger-man Philology in their written assignments in English. Using the results of the analysis I postulate that such errors are often an effect of not only interlingual transfer (in particular loan translation), but also conceptual transfer. In the final part of the paper I present some language teaching implications of these psycholinguistic considerations. I am convinced that contrastive tasks at the linguistic and conceptual levels can contribute to the elimination of article errors committed by language learners.

Although language learning strategies are a well-researched topic, there are still some aspects which need further investigation and one of these is the application of strategic devices in the second and third language. The following article seeks to compare how learners of two foreign languages use strategies and shows both differences and similarities between the application of strategic devices by presenting the results of a research project in which a questionnaire and an interview were used as the research tools. Strategies were found to be used more often when learning the L2 than during the process of learning the L3. Dissimilarities were observed in the specific types of strategies used, especially in the case of metacognitive strategies, while similarities were noted in the use of affective strategies.

The phenomenon of multilingualism and the related acquisition processes are present in philological academic teaching. Such processes have been observed among students of Polish origin studying Russian philology in the classess with practical learning of the Ukrainian language. The article attempts to describe the determinants of the acquisition of another foreign language in academic conditions. The survey conducted among Russian philology students identified a number of individual and social factors inter alia, age, gender, age of the first contact with languages, contexts and ways of acquiring individual languages, attitudes toward each language or motivation, which may initially indicate trends and ways shaping these processes. Aquisition of another foreign language, additionally closely related, causes the appearance of interlingual influence in the target language. The examples of influence were observed on the basis of selected language subsystems (phonetics, morphology, vocabulary).
