In 2014 we celebrated the 10th anniversary of the death of Fr. A.L. Szafrański, professor at the Catholic University of Lublin. This is an opportunity to re-examine his scientific output. This article presents the achievement of Szafrański on the history of theological thought, concept of pastoral theology, theology of the parish, and theology of signs of the times – called kairology. Szafrański's pastoral theology can be defined as alive, dynamic, existential and constantly seeking theology. It is a theology of human beings and human culture, and theology of dialogue with modern world, problems of modern society and its changes. Szafrański was returning permanently to the fundamental sources of theology – the Holy Scripture and the Tradition, but he always remained sensitive to the signs of the times in which he tried to hear the voice of God speaking in the history of the world and man, but also in the community of the Church. It seems this style of pastoral theology, Szafrański left to his disciples as a model, is still up to date and relevant to the challenges facing the Church in Poland at the beginning of the XXI century.

W 2014 roku przypadła 10 rocznica śmierci Profesora KUL, ks. A.L. Szafrańskiego. Stanowi to okazję do ponownego pochylenia się nad jego dorobkiem naukowo-pisarskim. Ten artykuł ma charakter przeglądowy i prezentuje osiągnięcia Szafrańskiego na temat: historii myśli teologicznej, koncepcji teologii pastoralnej, teologii parafii oraz teologii znaków czasu, czyli kairologii. Uprawiana przez Szafrańskiego teologia pastoralna jawi się jako teologia żywa, dynamiczna, egzystencjalna i stale poszukująca. Jest to teologia człowieka i jego kultury, a także teologia dialogu ze światem współczesnym, problemami współczesnego społeczeństwa i dokonującymi się w nim przemianami. Wracając stale do fundamentalnych źródeł teologii – do Pisma Świętego i Tradycji, ks. Szafrański pozostawał wrażliwy na znaki czasu, w których usiłował usłyszeć głos Boga przemawiającego w historii świata i człowieka, ale także we wspólnocie Kościoła. Wydaje się, że właśnie ten styl uprawiania teologii pastoralnej, jakiego wzór pozostawił swoim uczniom ks. prof. A.L. Szafrański, jest wciąż aktualny i adekwatny do wyzwań, przed jakimi stoi Kościół w Polsce na początku XXI wieku.

The essay formulates four criteria for identifying the topos “signs of the times” and applies them for a specific Christian understanding of the ecological crisis. The aim of the argumentation is to decide why and in what way climate change, ecological degradation but also the new awareness of the value of nature is a theological issue. The second part of the essay deals with the question which competence the churches can contribute to the ecological discourse of a pluralistic, partly secular or atheistic society. I speak also about the encyclical Laudato si’.
