The crisis of modern culture manifests itself in multiple forms. An important source of new global spiritual threats in the world is a crisis of civilization. The crisis of truth, which is expressed by the crisis of science, ideology and faith, has caused existential emptiness and anxiety. The term “irrational stupidity” has appeared in publications as an expression of general trends of the late twentieth century civilization. A civilization was developing which was simulated by imagination and illusion, a civilization detached from the truth, where a concocted man is first while the living one is far behind. In this situation appeared the term “culture of idiots” – one of the models. Another model of culture is often illustrated by the myth of the nymph Echo (punished so that she had lost her own voice and could only repeat) and the myth of Narcissus (in love with his own reflection). It is reflected by the theater dominated by a monologue (one-man show), visual arts with various types of exhibitionist self-portraying; literature dominated by autobiography and memoir rather than a story, in other plays – “monadizm” or forcing men to portray men, blacks – to imagine the blacks, etc., in philosophy – extreme relativism, on the border of solipsism (the denial that there may be truth beyond our own thoughts). In the religious life its expression are sects – justifying atomism of an individual, their closing on the environment, hiding man, and life – with superficial sensibility (“autistic”). Treating one’s own religion as the next “segment” of life, which can be easily “replaced” for another, makes it impossible to remain in Christian culture. Every love, including Christian, is associated with fidelity, which results in dedication, sometimes bordering on heroic. In the “culture of change” this important attribute of faith disappears, subject to market valuation – it is becoming one of the international market offers today. And in a culture of destruction there is no place for positive building – the national and Christian culture is subject to disintegration and suspicion. Fidelity is treated as a negation of the total “opening up” to the world – including the evil and destructive forces, which completely changes the perspective of culture.
Among the most important problems of the modern preaching we can list: – Phonetic problems – Expansion of colloquial language in preaching – Domination of theological jargon in preaching. Every preacher should remember that the mastery in the use of the spoken and written language is essential to be a success, not only in the communication but, what even more important, in the educational fi eld. Th e permanent development and actualization of preacher knowledge in the fi eld of linguistic seems to be indispensable to reach this mastery. It is even more important since the improvement in the fi eld of preaching is always combined with the development of the spiritual life of the preacher.
The article shows that popular understanding of Eckhart’s God as a personal God is not confirmed by the analysis of Eckhart’s texts, but adopted from the most common concept of God. The article presents three of such interpretations.
The article shows the names of the sacrament of baptism used in Piotr Skarga’s sermons. The analyzed material has been taken from Kazania o siedmi sakramentach published in 1600 in Krakow by A. Piotrowczyk publishing house, whereas the comparative material has originated from Słownik polszczyzny XVI wieku and other publications about religious language, which are enumerated in the bibliography. The analysis of the materials shows that Skarga has not created new names for the sacrament of baptism. They have the same forms as in the Bible or in the papers of Church Fathers, namely baptism, the sacrament of the baptism. The preacher uses also comparisons and metaphors, eg. bath-house, revival, circumcision.
The article shows the names of the sacrament of penance used in Piotr Skarga’s sermons. The analyzed material has been taken from Kazania o śiedmi Sákrámentách, published in 1600 in Krakow by Andrzej Piotrkowczyk publishing house, whereas the comparative material has originated from Słownik polszczyzny XVI wieku and other publications about religious language, which are enumerated in the bibliography. The analysis of the materials shows that Skarga has not created new names for the sacrament of conversion. They have the same forms as in the Bible or in the papers of Church Fathers, namely penance, the sacrament of the confession, the sacrament of the penance, reconciliation, absolution. The preacher uses also comparisons and metaphors, eg. bathhouse, plank (second plank), as shipwreck plank, for showing the doctrine of the sacrament precisely.
St. Chromatius, bishop of Aquileia, who lived at the turn of the IV and V century, as a zealous pastor, led by concern for the salvation of his faithful, undertook in his predicatory teaching an explanation of the queations of faith. Without indications of any polemics – as one might expect – with the Arianism which was spread through the Gothic invaders, he did it, not ignoring however the important doctrinal aspect which constitutes the basis of the act of faith. He teaches, that to believe means to walk incessantly the Christ’s way of righteousness, know thanks to the proclaimed Gospel. Receiving the holy baptism is the beginning of that way. In a simple, but interesting at the same time, preaching being not infrequently the fruit of an allegorical, often amazing interpretation of the Bible events and signs know to his listeners, the bishop of Aquileia furthermore encourages to fidelity to the chosen way of righteousness, making his listeners aware that walking this way means not only walking a way that is free from wrongdoing, which brings concrete fruits, of which the most valuable is the eternal salvation. Being aware of many menaces in spiritual life, he also warns in his sermons against the danger of losing the faith.
Ein besonderer Teil der Sammlung von Predigten des Hl. Antoniusumfasst einige Gebete. The present paper aims at analyzing the conceptualization of christian life through the conceptual etaphor christian life is family life in John Henry Newman’s Parochial and Plain Sermons. After the presentation of the theory of conceptual metaphor in the light of cognitive semantics, the members of the metaphorical family of the Christian life are introduced. Next, the article analyzes the metaphorical way of a Christian’s growing up, whose goal is a spiritual marriage with Christ.
The subject of the study was 16th-century biblical prints (15 selected sermons) from the collection of the Library of the Count Wiktor Baworowski Foundation in Lviv. Analysis of their preservation status was carried out using the Stanford method. It is a statistical method of assessing the state of preservation of book collections, used for this purpose in most studies of library collections (paper, book block, binding). The evaluation of the paper’s state of preservation takes into account its staining, discolouration, the degree of tearing and the number of double folds. When evaluating a book block, the degree of damage to the sewing or gluing ,which affects the strengthening of the pages in the block, is taken into account. The durability and the overall state of preservation of the surface are taken into account when evaluating the binding. The combined evaluation of these three criteria makes it possible to classify the examined item into one of three categories: prints in very good condition, prints in need of restoration work, and prints in very poor condition that should be taken out of use. An assessment of the state of preservation of the paper, block and binding of the biblical publications from the Lviv collection made it possible to classify the objects into the following categories: first – none; second – nine items, accounting for 60% of the total sample; third – six items, accounting for 40% of the total sample. The evaluation of each print was expanded to include additional paper strength tests and an assessment of the degree of acidity of the paper. The paper is in very good condition in terms of mechanical strength. Determination of the paper’s pH was performed by the contact method using an Elmetron CX-741 pH meter, with a composite EPX-3 electrode with an option to automatically determine the end of measurement. In each print, pH was tested at eight points. Five points were delineated on the title page, four of which were located in the corners of the title page and one in the centre. The three remaining measurements were taken on randomly selected pages in the book block, two on the unprinted area and one on the printed area. The measured pH value indicates low acidification rate. The average pH of the books studied is above pH 6, hence items with pH values above 6 do not require deacidification. On the basis of a visual analysis of the biological damage, it can be concluded that the book collection was not stored in optimal conditions in the past, as evidenced by the damage caused by insects, as well as fungi-based stains and streaks on paper.

Przedmiotem badań były XVI-wieczne druki biblijne (15 wybranych kazań) z kolekcji Biblioteki Fundacji Wiktora hr. Baworowskiego we Lwowie.
The article discusses one of the early sermons by Nicholas of Cusa – Sermo VII Remittuntur ei peccata multa, written in a dialogue form, uncharacteristic of the sermon genre. The main protagonist is Mary Magdalene, who was described on the basis of biblical and apocryphal stories. According to Sermo VII she is an allegory of the soul’s love for God. The article contains the analysis of Cusanus’ concept and terminology of love (amor, caritas, dilectio) as well as the description of the image of three and seven stages of love. Moreover, there have been identified intertextual relations between the semen and sources attributed to Bonaventura such as De diaeta salutis by Guillaume de Lanicia and De septem itineribus aeternitatis by Rudolf von Biberach. Finally, there are also deeper semantic analyses of more difficult fragments.

My jesteśmy czasem.

This article is devoted to the manifestations of patriotism in the teachings (homilies, sermons, occasional speeches in the years 1986-1994) of Rev Stanisław Jeż, protonotary apostolic, who for 30 years (from 1985 to 2015) had been the rector of the Polish Catholic Mission in France. His teachings were collected in the publication entitled My jesteśmy czasem. Kazania i homilie [We are the time. Sermons and homilies], published in Paris in 1995 by the Polish Catholic Mission in France. The article focuses on the manifestations of love for the Homeland and compatriots and concern for them in the sermons of Rev S. Jeż. While discussing the diversity of these manifestations, the article focuses on presenting the ways of “smuggling” patriotic thoughts in his sermons through: the use of historical events important for Poland and Poles, celebrating anniversaries and jubilees, reference to current events in Homeland, celebrating significant events for the Polish community abroad (jubilees of service, anniversaries of important institutions), reference to the life and teaching of the Holy Father John Paul II, recalling the models of life of Polish saints, recalling the characters and the words of eminent Poles, quoting excerpts from the works of outstanding Polish artists, voicing concern for the preservation of Polish culture and tradition in emigration, solidarity and the community of emigrants.
Podejmując analizę pytań o wieczność świata i o Boga przed stworzeniem, Kuzańczyk zawarł również w kazaniu ukrytą obronę tez Eckharta potępionych w papieskiej bulli In agro dominico.

The article contains the analysis of Cusanus’ Sermon CCXVI Ubi est qui natus est rex Iudaeorum?, describes its dependence on Expositio sancti Evangelii secundum Iohannem by Meister Eckhart and discusses the idea of God as locus omnium, present in both authors, as well as in the thought of John Scotus Eriugena. Sermon CCXVI demonstrates the importance of christology in Cusanus’ work and is an example of how the sermon genre affects the organization and explication of philosophical issues, such as the problem of the relationship between God and creation and the concept of time and space. Moreover, Nicholas of Cusa analyses the questions of the eternity of the world and of God’s place before creation. In this way, he defends some of Eckhart’s teaching, condemned in the papal Bull In agro dominico.
In the article vast possibilities are indicated of using Old Polish sermons to study culture, first of all popular culture. First, a typical collection of Sunday sermons is analyzed, presenting their rich contents and broad possibilities of their pastoral influence. Apart from that the reader's attention is drawn to Marian sermons shaping a peculiar religiousness connected with sanctuaries devoted to the Virgin Mary. In essence sermons of those times formed the faithful's sphere of axiotics, and besides that they shaped a specific image of the world. They also contributed to forming social bonds.
One of the many topics that have found their place in the teaching of Fr. Jerzy Popieluszko was the truth about freedom and human dignity. Żoliborz preacher of his life, and in every sermon preached during the Mass. for the Homeland in the church Stanislaus Kostka in Warsaw's Żoliborz, courageously stood in defense of fundamental values that shape society and man. The issue of freedom he effected a distinction between freedom: inside and outside. Despite the many socio-political changes in Poland and Europe in many regions of the world. Especially when changes leading to democracy and economic liberalism, human freedom is sometimes treated lightly. Freedom „external and internal” so much at stake in times of ministry of Fr. Popieluszko, is again in danger of enslavement „interior” of man through various ideologies and trends. „Martyr of communism” very often emphasized that the freedom given to man is not itself a goal, but a means to an end, and this goal is good, namely, love. What regulates the correct procedure in freedom and using it, the Decalogue, and guided by the law of God's love. He expressed Fr. Jerzy Popieluszko in his preaching. Life Christian truth, he put a sensible use of the gift of freedom.
The aim of the article is to characterise the image of the wife in the homiletics of Antoni Węgrzynowicz. The analysis of selected excerpts from sermons dedicated to women allows us to see the following issues that are in the preacher’s area of interest: a woman’s place in marriage, obedience to her husband, responsibility for the good name of the family and raising children. The faults he particularly condemns are quarrelsomeness, vanity, and alcohol abuse. He gives different ways of disciplining women, but generally disapproves of domestic violence and points out that responsibility for a successful relationship lies with both spouses. Against the background of anti-woman literature and theology of the second half of the 17th and early 18th centuries, Węgrzynowicz’s sermons are characterised by a balanced and moderate approach.

W bibliotece Uniwersytetu Wrocławskiego przechowywany jest rękopis BUWr I Q 377, zawierający kolekcję przykładowych kazań Jana Frankensteina, wybitnego piętnastowiecznego intelektualisty, kaznodziei, inkwizytora Wrocławskiego, zaangażowanego w późnośredniowieczny ruch odnowy Kościoła.

The library of the Wroclaw University houses a manuscript BUWr I Q 377, which comprises a compilation of exemplary sermons of Jan Frankenstein, an outstanding 15th century intellectual, preacher, Wroclaw inquisitor engaged in late medieval movement of Church renewal. Although the manuscript has been frequently mentioned in historiog-raphy, a considerable part of the sermons has not been reviewed yet. The present article is devoted to the genesis of two of the abovementioned sermons. Sermons Scio quid faciam refer to the same topic and their contents are to a large extent the same (although one is 15 pages long, while the other is 5). These are ser-mons intended for the time of plague and they contain advice pertaining to life and priestly service in the infected city. They were prepared during the plague of 1439 in Wroclaw to raise the moral level of the Dominican Fathers and written by Franken-stein as two versions of a model text for the time of plague.
The object of this paper is the edition of a textual source which shows religious life of the Polish Armed Forces in the West which were staying on the Isle of Bute. Commander-in-chief, general Władysław Sikorski decided that officers without allocation (Independent Officers’ Camp), Officer Concentration Station, are to be placed there. Both elderly officers (incapable of liner service), people conflicted with superiors and political enemies of gen. Sikorski were directed to this station. This camp existed since 1940 till 1944. More than 800 officers were staying there at this time. Religious matters have been only marginally mentioned in recollections from Rothesay. Fortunately, in the legacy of father Marcin Chrostowski OP (who served as the station’s chaplain) a text of his religious conference has been passed down to our day. It needs to be said that father Marcin volunteered in 1920 campaign against the Soviets, i.e. before he entered the Dominican order. During WWII he was (among his other tasks) a chaplain of the field bishop Gawlina with whom he went to visit Polish soldiers in USSR. Later, father Chrostowski served in the 1st Armored Division. His heroism was rewarded (among other things) by the War Order of Virtuti Militari.

Krinovskii was a preacher in the court of the empress Elizabeth and a member of the Synod. A hundred of his sermons have been published four times in A collection of various instructive talks. In his sermons, Krinowskii spoke about the providence of God and the necessity of the full awareness of God’s presence in everyone’s life. To assure the benevolent presence of God, one’s life has to be pure and modelled after Christ. The life led by God’s precepts will ensure happiness on earth and in the afterlife. Krinovskii’s salvific and moral message was mostly ecumenical, but his sermons are not free from exaggerated praises of the empress and of the role of Russia and Orthodoxy.
