The preaching in Poland has a similar history to that of other Western countries. Among the priestly functions, the greatest importance was given to preaching, because it required adequate intellectual, oratorical and spiritual qualities. In the Canons Regular, this duty was entrusted to clergymen holding an academic grade. Three of their monasteries were outstanding: Kazimierz, Kraśnik and Vilnius – they were formation houses (novitiate, seminary), provided with an adequate library and employing several professors of philosophy and theology. Regarding the merits for Polish preaching, the Canons Regular of the Lateran hold an important place after the Jesuit, Dominican and Bernardine orders.
