Franz Kafka was a writer interested in the European intellectual vision of the East. As an intellectual of the German cultural circles he was familiar with contemporary types of reception of the Orient (literary, philosophical and religious aspects), both in positive and negative terms. In several of his works (The Great Wall of China, An Old Manuscript, Jackals and Arabs) he employs oriental motifs to express his own, autonomous worlds of imagination and thought. Although they relate to the Western European projections of the East, Kafka was generally more interested in outlining a situation of tension between the rational and impulsive factor in human consciousness, or expressing the sense of alienation felt by an individual towards a modern state. In addition to these factors, for Kafka the Orient was also a way to manifest his own responsibility for creating literature understood as a way of spiritual development.
In the interwar period (1918–1939), prior to the development of the comparative literature discipline, the most important Polish authors would be included in the canon of world literature in studies published in Hungary. Mihály Babits’s great synthesis, Az európai irodalom története [History of European Literature], only includes the names of Adam Mickiewicz and Henryk Sienkiewicz (without stating the titles of their works), because Babits divided the individual national literatures into “major” and “minor” ones, and considered both Polish and Hungarian literature to belong to the latter group. In turn, Antal Szerb, author of the still popular A világirodalom története [History of World Literature], described Polish Romanticism competently in a separate subsection and provided a brief summary of the earlier periods. In his opinion, Polish and Hungarian literature developed parallel to each other, and during the Renaissance both literatures produced poetry at the highest level in the respective national languages. The researcher was convinced that not only were certain periods and individual authors “astonishingly similar”, but that the entire history of both literatures was built on similar principles. In the following decades, data was collected on Polish-Hungarian contacts, focusing on reception and imagology. Factual material was collected confirming Polish-Hungarian literary contacts in the spirit of positivist literary science. Thanks to Endre Bojtár’s many years of systematic work, Central European comparative literature established itself at the Institute for Literary Studies of Hungarian Academy of Sciences. Bojtár contributed to a paradigm shift, with a new category of Central European literature emerging between world literature and Hungarian literature. Another researcher, György Spiró, also worked in the field of regional comparative literature, and compiled a history of drama “from the Enlightenment to Wyspiański’s synthesis”. Not so long ago, in the 1980s, leading Hungarian prose writers such as Péter Esterházy and Péter Nádas, avidly read and commented on the works of Witold Gombrowicz, among others, but subsequent generations lost contact with Polish literature.

Autor nadal popularnej A világirodalom története [Historia literatury światowej], Antal Szerb, w osobnym podrozdziale kompetentnie scharakteryzował romantyzm polski i krótko podsumował epoki wcześniejsze. Autor podsunął kilka interesujących pomysłów do badań komparatystycznych. Napisał monografie o środkowo-wschodnioeuropejskiej awangardzie, a następnie o oświeceniu i romantyzmie w literaturach regionu.
At the beginning of the 1990s,Tadeusz Różewicz prepared his own selection of poems by Norwid. Although this personal anthology was never published, a trace of it lingers in the form of the essay “To, co zostało z nienapisanej książki o Norwidzie” [What remains of the book on Norwid I never wrote], and more deeply – in the shape of numerous references to Norwid’s poetry and biography in Różewicz’s lyricism from the last quarter of his literary career. This article attempts to reconstruct Różewicz’s dialogue with his nineteenth-century precursor, which he initiatedlate in his life. Analysis incorporates several aspects of Harold Bloom’s theory of literary influence, indicating shared elements and polemical issues. Interpretations revolve primarily around works from those poetry books by Różewicz that contain particularly clear references to Norwid: Płaskorzeźba, Szara strefa, Nożyk profesora, Zawsze fragment. Recykling, and Wyjście. Conclusions drawn from a number of detailed, comparatist readings make it possible to establish thematic similarities (e.g. existential lack and incompleteness affecting both the lyrical subject and the poems’ protagonists, a predilection for developing figures who are misunderstood, inconspicuous, and hollowed out, etc.) andformal preferences (e.g. the use of ellipsis, terse and precise imagery, and consideration for the poem’s visual dimension). However, Różewicz also identifies in Norwid’s poetry certain things that repel him, e.g. lofty poetics, self-restraint with regard to sensuality, and the tendency to obscure the literal character of evil with symbolic images.

To, co zostało z nienapisanej książki o Norwidzie, a głębszym rezultatem – intensywna obecność nawiązań do poezji i biografii Norwida w liryce Różewicza z ostatniego ćwierćwiecza twórczości. Tematem artykułu jest rekonstrukcja dialogu poety z dziewiętnastowiecznym prekursorem podjętego w późnej twórczości (analizowana przy zastosowaniu niektórych aspektów koncepcji badania wpływów literackich Harolda Blooma): wskazanie miejsc wspólnych i kwestii polemicznych. Materiałem skupiającym uwagę autorki, poddanym analizie i interpretacji, są przede wszystkim wiersze ze zbiorów poetyckich Różewicza szczególnie wyraziście nasyconych nawiązaniami do Norwida: z Płaskorzeźby, szarej strefy, nożyka profesora, recyklingu, wyjścia. Konkluzje wynikające z szeregu szczegółowych, komparatystycznych interpretacji pozwoliły odnaleźć współbrzmienia tematyczne (temat egzystencjalnego braku i niedopełnienia, które dotykają i podmiot wierszy, i lirycznych bohaterów, predylekcja do kreowania postaci niezrozumianych, niepozornych, ale i wewnętrznie wydrążonych…), pokrewne predylekcje warsztatowe (np. eliptyczność, oszczędne i precyzyjne obrazowanie, przywiązywanie wagi do graficznego kształtu wiersza).

Ta sytuacja wynika z niewiedzy Polaków o Niemcach, a Niemców o Polakach.

The article concerns Kornelia Ćwiklak's imagological studies, collected in the book Literackie podróże do Polski i Niemiec (Literary Journeys to Poland and Germany). The text discusses the author's scientific achievements and the results of her comparative studies. They relate to contemporary relations of Germans abou Poland and Poles about Germany, as well as mutual stereotypes marked negatively. This situation results from the ignorance of Poles about Germans and Germans about Poles.
The author tracks the process of Umberto Eco’s works’ reception taking root in the Polish literary culture. Various translations of the writer’s works have been available for over 50 years in the Polish tradition, evolving from the literary-critical reception in the mass and literary media, through neophilological, translation, and comparative studies, to academic literature and history textbooks. It is worth noting that shifting the Italian author’s works to these textbooks depends on a quantitative increase in Eco’s novels’ translations, a process which has allowed him to be considered a novelist whose scientific or philosophical reflections are of secondary importance in the academic books.

Studia porównawcze o polskiej tożsamości literackiej i kulturowej” (2022).

The text is a discussion on Maria Delaperrière’s latest book “Okiem innego. Studia porównawcze o polskiej tożsamości literackiej i kulturowej” („The Eye of the Other. Comparative Studies in Polish Literary and Cultural Identity,” 2022). It is a classical collection of papers the well thought-out preparation and methodological foundations of which are based on the assumptions of literary and cultural comparative studies. The reviewer examines the papers contained in the book in the literary historical and theoretical contexts.
The objective of this comparative article is to present the similarity of poetic concepts of Antonio Colinas and Zbigniew Herbert. The poets did not know each other, there are no traces of mutual influences to be found in their poetic output either, however, they both seemed to be equally connected with the Mediterranean culture. This article concentrates on the meaning of silence in their poetry seen as a necessary supplement to the art of words, hope for saving the sense from ambiguity and hubbub of words. Insufficiency of both the accessible language and silence inspires the poets to seek a form of expression that could satisfy human needs, “the unattainable language.” The search, between the word and silence, is manifested in the poetic works of Colinas and Herbert.

The research hypothesis, on which this article is based, is the statement, that new novel infl uences can be found in Jerzy Andrzejewski’s works. Beginning with an att empt to link the writer’s biography with his work, I will att empt to indicate those characteristics of Andrzejewski’s works (especially among Bramy raju and Miazga) which will enable us to extract some parallels between the poetics of those works and the style created (elaborated) by new novel authors.
The paper is an attempt to reconstruct and characterise discourses in the comparative literature studies in the 20th and 21st centuries. Beginning with the presentation of the methodology of comparative research in the 50’s of the 20th century, the author undertakes the evaluation of research strategies, models and concepts in the consequent decades. She points out that the subject of controversies and disputes of comparative researchers referred to difficulties connected with establishing the identity of a developing discipline, its instrumentation and place in the contemporary, postmodern directions of literature studies. While recalling and commenting on the opinions of Polish and foreign academics, she indicates the methodological intricacies accompanying an attempt to clarify the research aims and tasks of comparative studies in the period of cultural turn. In this aspect, she also considers the category of the dialogue and discursiveness, interculturalism and transculturalism along with the aspect of translation and its role in the process of cross-cultural communication.

Artykuł jest próbą rekonstrukcji i charakterystyki dyskursów w komparatystyce literackiej w XX i XXI wieku. Wychodząc od zaprezentowania metodologii badań porównawczych w latach pięćdziesiątych XX wieku, Autorka podejmuje ocenę strategii, modeli i koncepcji badawczych w kolejnych dziesięcioleciach. Przedmiotem kontrowersji i sporów komparatystów, podkreśla, były trudności związane z określeniem tożsamości rozwijającej się dyscypliny, jej instrumentarium i miejsca we współczesnych, ponowoczesnych kierunkach literaturoznawstwa. Przywołując i komentując wypowiedzi polskich i zagranicznych uczonych, wskazuje na metodologiczne zawiłości towarzyszące próbie uściślenia celów i zadań badawczych komparatystyki w okresie tzw. zwrotu kulturowego.
