In the article I discuss the issues related to new tasks for adult continuing education resulting from the implementation of the lifelong learning strategy. I also refer to the report of the Study of Human Capital in Poland and other studies presenting different perspectives of adult education, including educational motives and needs. I state the thesis that the main determinants of adult learning are educational competences enabling self-education.

Streszczenie: W referacie poruszam kwestie związane z nowymi zadaniami stojącymi przed edukacją ustawiczną dorosłych wynikającymi z realizacji postulatów Strategii uczenia się przez całe życie. Odwołuję się do raportu Bilans Kapitału Ludzkiego oraz innych badań ukazujących różne perspektywy uczenia się dorosłych, między innymi motywy i potrzeby edukacyjne. Stawiam tezę, że główną determinantą uczenia się dorosłych są kompetencje edukacyjne umożliwiające autoedukację.
