Autor przedstawia w dużym skrócie problemy związane z rozwojem pomocowych i samopomocowych instytucji w Polsce, poczynając od wczesnych form świadczenia pomocy i wsparcia najuboższym, skończywszy na XIX i XX-wiecznych komunalnych kasach oszczędności oraz spółdzielniach finansowych (tj. kasach Stefczyka, bankach ludowych). Pretekstem do spojrzenia na 1000-letnie dzieje społecznych instytucji finansowych jest obchodzona w tym roku 1050. rocznica Chrztu Polski, ale także inne rocznice, m.in. 440. założenia Fundacji Taniego Kredytu w Ostrołęce i Banku Pobożnego w Wilnie, 250. powstania Republiki Pawłowskiej oraz 200. powołania Hrubieszowskiego Towarzystwa Rolniczego – uważanego za pierwszą polską spółdzielnię. Artykuł podkreśla fenomen powstawania tych i innych organizacji samopomocowych z rozwojem chrześcijaństwa, zwłaszcza ewangelicznego nakazu czynienia miłosierdzia, idei braterstwa, dobra wspólnego, mutualizmu chrześcijańskiego. Artykuł stanowi nieco zmieniony Wstęp do książki „Społeczne instytucje oszczędności i kredytu w Polsce do 1939 roku”, która ukaże się wkrótce nakładem Spółdzielczego Instytutu Naukowego.

The author presents in a nutshell the issues associated with the development of aid and self-help institutions in Poland, starting with the early forms of the provision of assistance and support to the poorest, ending on the nineteenth and twentieth-century municipal savings banks and financial cooperatives (ie. the Stefczyk’s credit unions, folk banks). The pretext to look at a 1000-years’ history of social financial institutions is the 1050th anniversary of christening of Poland celebrated this year, but also other anniversaries, among others 440th of the establishment of the Foundation of Cheap Credit in Ostroleka and Pious Bank in Vilnius, 250th of the foundation of the Pawlow’s Republic and 200th of creating Hrubieszow’s Agricultural Society – considered to be the first Polish cooperative. The article highlights the phenomenon of formation of these and other self-help organizations along with the development of Christianity, especially evangelical injunction of mercy, the idea of brotherhood, common good, Christian mutualism. The article is a slightly revised Preface to the book "Social savings and loan institutions in Poland until 1939”, which will be released shortly by the Cooperative Research Institute.
