Polish counterculture from the 80s had a quite specific character which was considerably different from the counterculture and alternative activities undertaken in the Western World. The aforementioned discrepancy was mostly visible in a declared anticommunist (and, in a broader sense, anti-leftist) attitudes, but also in the conservative world view (declared religiousness), lack of emancipation attitudes (for instance, in the realm of feminism or sexual minorities). Even the alternative circulation (outside the official channels) was more often chosen because of the objective difficulties caused by the communist system constrains. Due to that, declared by the activists principles and values were just a consequence of the existing situation. The authentic counterculture (in a way it is described in the West) started to crystalize in Poland only in the 90s. It was due to the new (younger) generation of activists that emerged back then. It is clearly visible upon analyzing the articles in underground fanzines from the late 80s and the early 90s.

The main purpose of the article is to present the influence of the counterculture on the development of the culture configuration – that means all the normative, symbolic and material elements of culture – of the Internet. The intensive development of computer technologies, including computer networks, took place in California, where counterculture had begun some time earlier. Many inventors of various new computer technologies, as well as members of the first virtual communities, were sympathizers of counterculture. One of the most important contributions of the counterculture to the culture configuration of the Internet was the idea of personal computers. On the influence of the counterculture the Internet was said to be an instrument which should provide communication freedom, free speech and creating of new communities. This way of thinking about the Internet is still partially presented but the Internet began to be used by the forces which the counterculture was afraid of. In effect the Internet became dangerous to personal freedom, dignity and privacy.

In this paper I make an attempt to apply mythical concept of consciousness, created by Leszek Kołakowski, to the analysis of actual state of consciousness of the generation ‘68. The category of mythologized consciousness derived indirectly from The Presence of Myth will serve to interpret the countercultural revolt as a response to the breakdown of meaningful metanarratives, including primarily Marxism. Attempts to revise and later a total refutation of Marxism, which has been the key reference point for the generation of counterculture are recognized not as a rejection of certain political beliefs, but as the collapse of faith in the organizing power of this ideology and its ability to give meaning to human activities. The universality of the myth stems from the structure of mythical consciousness and the presence of intentional correlates of this consciousness is a response to the fundamental human needs. Hence, counterculture is here presented as a response to the fundamental existential needs that arise from the organization of human consciousness, and not as a reaction to landmark in political history. This analysis puts the emphasis on the cultural dimension of social change rather than political, suggesting that the counterculture was more universal phenomenon, which goes beyond the local historical circumstances.
Celem artykułu jest analiza współczesnego zjawiska, określanego mianem minimalizmu, w wielu punktach nawiązującego do kontrkulturowych postulatów, choć niebędącego prostą kontynuacją hipisowskiej kontestacji.

From the standpoint of the history of the West, the countercultural hippie movement can be treated as another manifestation of a certain recurring cultural tendency in which the wish to break free from possessions is reborn, as well as questioning the values of high consumerism society and a return to the ideal of simple life. The article aims at the analysis of the contemporary phenomenon called minimalism, which in many points refers to countercultural postulates despite not being a simple continuation of the hippie contestation. This phenomenon can be most adequately referred to as „lifestyle” and is mostly associated with the blogosphere. The most popular minimalists are: Leo Babauta, Joshua Becker, Joshua Fields Millburn, and Ryan Nicodemus. Although minimalism is perceived mainly as a lifestyle in which people tend to free from the excess of things, in this article it will be treated as a form of anti-consumerist spirituality whose sources should be traced back in the western (taking place mostly in the US) fascination with Buddhism Zen. What will be also attempted in this study is showing the existence of structural similarities between minimalism and Buddhism Zen.
The article examines selected phenomena of the so-called krautrock, i.e. West German rock music of the late 1960s and the 1970s. The analysis is based on Mark Fisher's concept of acid communism and the related issue of collective subjectivity. The author distinguishes two opposing tendencies in the music discussed, the first one being the fascination with the collective that goes back to the student protests of 1967–1968, and the second one being the (re)appreciation of individual perspective, which manifested itself e.g. in an increased interest in spirituality and a certain kind of social criticism performed from a distanced position. Focusing on the relationship between the individual and the group, the article analyzes a number of songs and albums that have received little or no attention from researchers up to now.
The article proposes an analysis of the encounter between Merry Pranksters and Hell’s Angels that took place in the mid-sixties in California. The objective was to understand the complex and ambiguous logic and dynamics of that encounter: from the first contacts to a temporary alliance, built mostly during the joint LSD parties, and the final conflict that had also its political expression. The events described have been put in the wider context of the rise and fall of the American counterculture and yet presented basically in their singularity. Main points of reference were the writings of Hunter S. Thompson and Tom Wolfe.

Artykuł zawiera analizę spotkania, do jakiego doszło w połowie lat sześćdziesiątych w Kalifornii między grupą Merry Pranksters a członkami Hell’s Angels. Głównymi punktami odniesienia były teksty Huntera S. Thompsona i Toma Wolfe’a.
Lata sześćdziesiąte XX w. w USA to moment aktywności społecznej i politycznej młodego pokolenia. The 1960s in the US were marked by social and political activity of a young generation. It was evident in, among other things, expressive stressing of their own distinctiveness. The controversy over a small plot of land in Berkeley in May 1969 became their symbol. In the hot political atmosphere of California at the end of the 1960s the dispute about the People’s Park led to a failed attempt to resolve it by force with the use of law enforcement services, and the death of one of the protesters gave the conflict much broader character than a local controversy over an unused plot of land.

In 2001 when the online encyclopedia – Wikipedia was created, its editors received full in-clusiveness. The initial period of the development of Wikipedia is mostly forming the countercul-ture community. That movement was started by hackers who created free software projects such as GNU/Linux in the 90s of the XX century. The fast development of community of that encyclopedia has caused fundamental social consequences. Increasingly strong ties have developed among the most active users. Relationships with new users, previously cordial and informal, became cooler and distanced. As a result, the same social environment through changes in these relationships began to change. More people ready to accept existing forms of interpersonal relationships arrived to the project. In this article the author, based on the content analysis of selected philosophical statements of users and several years of participant observation, describes the changing trends in the value system and changes in treatment of new users by the community of Wikipedia. The author emphasizes increasing number of editors taking conservative values and conformist attitudes to editors taking liberal values and nonconformist attitudes.
The paper presents musical development of Alice in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll from a perspective of the counterculture of the 60s. The authoress shows how the existence of psychodelia in arts and culture of that decade made Carroll’s work a kind of record of the so called “trip”. Trying to analyze what happens to the lyrics’ protagonists, for example Alice, Mad Hatter, Caterpillar or White Rabbit, the authoress indicates the transformations of them in songs of The Beatles, Jefferson Airplane, The Incredible String Band, The Monkees or Tom Northcott. The lyrics were divided into three parts: The Alice Who Knows, The Alice Who Is Gone and The Wonderland’s Inhabitants

Over the past two decades, a demand for audience participation in creative and design processes has been increasingly felt. A profound transformation of the field of art is a consequence of its timeliness. The desideratum of participation of recipients and users as creators is not limited to the sphere of art, but also applies to city development processes, common spaces or digital culture. This is a result of the observed transformation of attitudes of both artists and designers who now want to expand the spectrum of their social presence to act as responsible citizens. However, today's proliferation of projects incorporating unprofessional and vernacular activities has not resulted in a broader analysis of this phenomenon in the field of art history. In this situation, a theoretical reflection that will follow the changes taking place seems to be an important need. The deficit of the correct understanding of the concepts of participatory art and participatory design translates into practical consequences in a situation where the slogan of participation is readily picked up by local authorities, referring to it during processes of urban tissue transformation and revitalization of neglected quarters. Therefore, the role of the following text is first of all – an indication of the sources of art and participatory design and the values associated with them, and secondly – a review and ordering of existing definitions. In this way, it has a chance to become an opportunity for rethinking what the phenomena actually are.

W ciągu ostatnich dwóch dekad postulat partycypacji publiczności w procesach twórczych i projektowych coraz silniej daje o sobie znać.
W artykule omówiono książkę „Królestwo lęku” Huntera S. Thompsona i usytuowano ją w kontekście biografii reportera, głównych założeń dziennikarstwa gonzo oraz Nowego Dziennikarstwa.

The purpose of this article is to present a book “Kingdom of Fear” by Hunter S. Thompson in the context of reporter’s biography and the main features of gonzo journalism and New Journalism. The examination shows that “Kingdom of Fear” is not only a text with an autobiographical key, but also an important commentary on the author’s work, and a kind of political manifesto. This multi-thematic project is clearly reflected in a hybrid structure of the book which succinctly combines elements of journalism and personal document literature. Based on the considerations contained in the research, it can be concluded that due to the numerous forms of subjective self-presentation and autocreation, which correspond to the narrative practices typical of gonzo reportage, “Kingdom of Fear” can be described as a gonzo(auto)biography.
Zen in the attic. A contribution to the reception of Buddhism in PolandThe reception of Buddhism, which in Europe began already in the nineteenth century, did not pass over Poland. Initially limited to scientific milieus and small social circles, in time Buddhism became more widely present, especially in artistic communities and youth subculture groups. After the World War Second, despite of being cut off by the Iron Curtain from main cultural changes, Poland was permeated by fashions and phenomena characteristic of the Atlantic civilisation, including the fascination for Oriental religiosity, especially Buddhism. Oriental studies were carried out at universities, while individuals and groups of enthusiasts tried on their own to study Buddha’s writings and teachings. There were among those people Władysław Misiewicz from Radom and Piotr Boniński from Gliwice. Their interest, however, was limited to intellectual reflection and they did not practice Buddhism. One of the first groups to practice Buddhist meditation was the circle of artist Andrzej Urbanowicz, who in 1967, together with his friends established an artistic group called “Oneiron”. Texts and intellectual quest led them towards Zen Buddhism, and Urbanowicz’s atelier became the first place in Poland where meditation was practiced. Meetings were also held at Mąchocice Kapitulne near Kielce. Activities of the still unformal group of Buddhists were kept under surveillance by the secret police. In 1975 Philip Kapleau, an American teacher of Buddhism, answered the group’s invitation, and from that time on, he visited Poland many a time. After Urbanowicz left Poland, in 1978, architect Andrzej Korbel became the leader of the group; in time, the Warsaw circle took the lead, with psychotherapist Wojciech Eichelberger. In the meantime, however, efforts to legalise the group encountered obstacles and it was not until 1981 that the first Zen Buddhist Community in Poland was established. Later on, next groups were organised but, despite the fact that a real breakthrough took place after 1989, already in the 1980s there were four officially registered Buddhist communities, with branches and circles in different towns and cities.

Why, in April 1969, did ADORNO, the philosopher of the student revolt, the advocate of the avant-garde from Schoenberg to Beckett, flee when he was faced with the performative actions of protesting students with naked breasts? The article discusses connections between ADORNO’S Dialectics of Enlightenment, Negative Dialectics and Aesthetic Theory and the aesthetics of today’s performative and post-dramatic theatre. For ADORNO, theatre remained a place of art, and the revolution did not come to fruition in the performative denial of meaning, in the cruel reality of “sirens”, and in deconstruction, but in the work of art itself, that is supposed to represent the irreconcilable and thus to lead to reconciliation.
