The paper is devoted to a critical analysis of the discourse on Autonomní sociální centrum Klinika (Autonomous Social Centre Klinika) that was of high relevance in the Czech public sphere in 2014–2019. The Klinika centre was founded in Prague by a group of civic activists in a building owned by the Czech state which had long fallen into ruin. In 2014 they entered it without the owner’s consent. Both demonstrations in support of the centre and repeated police interventions attracted intense media attention, while control over identities, meanings and relations was disputed until the police clear-out in 2019. We aimed to discover what discourse strategies were chosen by particular social actors and what meaning configurations were created in their texts. Based on a) a set of qualitative analyses of nomination and predication strategies (Wodak, 2001; Wodak & Reisigl, 2009) in five initial discourse phase texts and b) frequency analysis of two large corpora representing Klinika supporters and media mainstream, we carried out a detailed concordance analysis of the relation between the activists’ group and the citizen category. Using the methods of corpus-assisted critical discourse analysis (e.g., Baker, 2006; Baker et al., 2008), we focused on the question of to what extent, in which contexts and via which discourse processes Klinika ended up outside or inside the ingroup. The main finding is that by keeping control over the concept of citizen, Klinika’s final displacement in January 2019 did not mean its discursive defeat. In fact, activists managed to keep their story about a civic opposition against an incompetent power. State violence terminating the existence of the Klinika centre only confirmed its discursive victory

This paper describes the development of a discursive image of the Děkujeme, odcházíme (‘Thank you, we are leaving’) initiative — a movement which was trying to draw attention to the problems of Czech health care system and achieve their solutions in the years 2010–2011. In the public sphere, there emerged a conflict of two groups represented by doctors on the one side and the Ministry of Health on the other side. The media played key role in this conflict, which shaped the discourse by their interpretation of the doctors’ requirements and presented the discourse image to the public. Using some elements of the theoretical frame of Discourse-Historical Approach to critical discourse analysis, the study analyzes the means of labelling and characterizing the main actors and also some other discourse strategies such as criminalization, threat of crisis or thematization of PR campaign. The subject of analysis is a sample of eighty media texts. The analysis shows how closely related is a change of public support to the Děkujeme, odcházíme initiative and a thematic transformation of discourse, particularly narrowing the affair only to a problem of money. The study points out that although the doctors accomplished their demands and won factually, they failed discursively.

This article deals with the special issue of Studie z aplikované lingvistiky / Studies in Applied Linguistics 1/2015 devoted to Critical Discourse Analysis, particularly one of its approaches, i.e. Discourse-Historical Approach (DHA). The studies included in the issue, i.e. Wodak and Reisigl’s model study explicating the main concepts and analytical tools of DHA and four case studies by Czech linguists inspired by DHA, are reanalyzed. Drawing on this reanalysis, the disputable aspects of the textual analysis conducted in the spirit of DHA are identified as follows: 1) the individual steps in the analysis (the identification of topics in the discourse analyzed, the identification of discursive strategies and the analysis of linguistic means) are implemented separately, hence the choice of linguistic expressions as a means of argumentation is not exposed and the discursive strategies of nomination and predication are analyzed separately; 2) the analysis shifts back and forth between the micro-context and the macro-context without adequate substantiation and does not devote sufficient attention to individual linguistic means; 3) the identification of topoi or fallacies does not sufficiently capture the role of linguistic means in argumentation and its relationship to other discursive strategies.

Karel Klostermann : dokumentarista Šumavy?

EN
This study engages in a critique of the documentary validity of Karel Klostermann’s (1848–1923) “Bohemian Forest” work, particularly with regard to the dominant narrative on the destruction of the “original” Bohemian Forest as a result of the unprecedented windstorm of 1870, which is a prominent motif in contemporary discourse on the Bohemian Forest National Park. By excerpting all the descriptions of the natural environment in the novels Ze světa lesních samot (From the World of Forest Solitude, 1891), V ráji šumavském (The Bohemian Forest Paradise, 1893) and the accompanying Črt ze Šumavy (Bohemian Forest Sketch, 1890) I create maps which are then contrasted to each other. By comparing them with the “overall” (general) descriptions, i.e. those relating to each book’s entire setting, I came to detect some significant discrepancies. I consider one substantial finding to be that although on the basis of general descriptions, Klostermann stated that the “Bohemian Forest” indeed underwent fundamental disruption in autumn 1870, his local descriptions tend more to indicate that there was no significant change in the ratio of “original” and exploited land resulting from the windstorm, the bark beetle outbreak and subsequent woodcropping. Hence the narrative that is traditionally identified with Klostermann’s work primarily arises from an inconsistent interpretation of text associated with the writer’s specific role (which, it should be added, is also partially reflected by him) as a creator of the collective memory for the entire region.

The paper deals with the development of specialized terminology in the field of cultural and creative industries. The first part, based on the Theory of Language Management and Critical Discourse Analysis, surveys how speakers in the field reflect the terminology and problems imposed by its use. The analysis focuses on a particular controversy in the nature of cultural and creative industries and its implementation in the Czech Republic (Gajdoš, 2010; Cikánek, 2011; Gajdoš, 2011). The second part scrutinizes the key collocation term kulturní a kreativní průmysly and its terminological variants. It investigates how the lexical components of the terms are used in Czech, what their common collocations are and what connotations they induce. The study shows how these properties affect the overall process of terminologization.

This article examines the discursive construction of Vietnamese communities in Czechia and Poland via narratives of the communities’ ordinary members in documentary films. The theoretical framework employed is critical discourse analysis (CDA), and, in particular, the Discourse-Historical Approach (DHA). I focus on two full-length documentary films, Banana Children in Czechia and Warsawers in Poland. These films are assessed and compared regarding their overall style and regarding the discourse topics. I analyse the referential and predicational strategies within the discourse topic of identity. Finally, I link the analysis of identities with the general social and legislative situation of the immigrant communities in the two host countries.

Tyto filmy zkoumám a srovnávám z hlediska celkového stylu a z hlediska diskurzivních témat. V rámci diskurzivního tématu identity analyzuji referenční a predikační strategie. Nakonec analýzu dávám do souvislosti s obecnou společenskou a legislativní situací přistěhovaleckých komunit v hostitelských zemích.

Karel Klostermann a diskurz o Šumavě

EN
This paper deals with a) the role of writer Karel Klostermann (1848?1923) and his work in the protracted debate over approaches to the administration of the Bohemian Forest National Park (BFNP), and b) a description of intertextual relations between three sets of texts: Karel Klostermann’s fiction, discourse on Karel Klostermann/the image of Klostermann’s fiction, and discourse on the BFNP. The material analysed consists of evidence from an extensive corpus of media texts on the BFNP dated 1991?2010, which use the life and work of Karel Klostermann as part of the argument data, both as quotations and simple references. This evidence is classified on the basis of the positions of the speakers and the motifs involved. The results of this analysis indicate not only that motifs from the discourse on Karel Klostermann have only to some extent crossed over into the discourse on the BFNP, depending in particular on the position of the speaker, but also that new motifs continue to cross over from fiction. However, it also reveals the nature of discourse on the BFNP, which is primarily determined by the dominant narrative of the unnatural character of the large-scale decline of mountain spruce trees.

The paper deals with the dispute about management of the Šumava National Park. The paper characterizes the discourse on the Šumava National Park on the basis of two interviews with the representatives of the contradictory positions. It analyzes the central topics, topoi and concepts by applying the Discourse-Historical Approach (DHA). The paper focuses on the way how both interviewees construct their opponent, how they construct the attribute “human” and in which contexts they use pronouns “we” and “they”. The paper reveals that the way of displaying the past is crucial for the identification of both dominant narratives. The basic interdiscursive relations in which the discourse on the Šumava National Park is involved are also outlined.
