The article presents selected problems related to the Latin-Polish critical edition of the first two volumes of the Natural History by Pliny the Elder. With regard to several passages from this ancient encyclopedia, which are important for the history of astronomy, the text pinpoints the insufficiency and some inaccuracies in the scientific commentary to the second book on cosmology, both in terms of content and sources. On the selected examples from the second volume, pertaining to anthropology and zoology, the article criticizes – in comparison to previous Polish translations – the text of the new one, which is sometimes significantly inconsistent with the Latin original.

The article analyses strategies utilised by Wilhelmina Zyndram-Kościałkowska, a translator of the novel Dopo il divorzio by Grazia Deledda, to introduce Deledda’s works on the polish literary market. The text shows ways in which characteristics of Deledda’s works and Kościałkowska’s translation strategies serve to minimise the effect of foreignness and to present Deledda’s works as important argument in the polemics between the literary tradition and the modernity. In consequence, the Polish translation of Dopo il divorzio may be viewed as an act of an influence on a Polish literary system.

In his poetic and metapoetic writing, Tadeusz Różewicz consciously works with the multiple meanings of the word poezja, which may be translated into German as Poesie, Lyrik, Dichtung, or Gedichte. Based on an analysis of the poezja in Różewicz's poetry, the present paper examines the word's translations into German by Henryk Bereska, Karl Dedecius, Gȕnter Kunert, Peter Lachmann, and Alois Woldan.

Der Dichter Tadeusz Różewicz arbeitet in seinem Schaffen bewusst mit der semantischen Vielfalt des Wortes ‚poezja', das je nach Bedeutung als ‚Poesie', ‚Lyrik', ‚Dichtung' oder ‚Gedichte' ins Deutsche übersetzt werden kann. Der vorliegende Aufsatz untersucht ausgehend von einer Analyse der Verwendung von ‚poezja' bei Różewicz die Übertragung des Wortes in deutschsprachigen Übersetzungen von Henryk Bereska, Karl Dedecius, Günter Kunert, Peter Lachmann und Alois Woldan.

In the present article I review Wte i wewte: Z tłumaczami o przekładach [Back and forth: Translators on translation] edited by Adam Pluszka. I refer to selected examples from the text to discuss the question of the translator’s identity and desire in a broadly defined psychoanalytical framework. I examine the possible realizations of the translator’s desire and emphasize the need for the translator’s “emancipation,” as argued by translators and translation critics alike.

Artykuł omawia książkę Adama Pluszki, Wte i wewte. Z tłumaczami o przekładach. Na podstawie wybranych fragmentów publikacji podejmuje kwestię prywatności tłumaczy i tłumaczek oraz – rozumianego psychoanalitycznie – pragnienia w procesie przekładu. Pokazuje możliwe realizacje przekładowego pragnienia oraz podkreśla konieczność – dostrzeganą także przez samych tłumaczy i teoretyków przekładu – „emancypacji” tłumaczy i tłumaczek.

Andrzej Tretiak as a translation critic

In 1924, the Polish National Library published Andrzej Tretiak’s edition of George Byron’s tales in verse. In the introduction and numerous footnotes, Tretiak explained why specific translations were selected and ranked them in terms of quality, pointing out the mistakes and the changes made by the translators. Tretiak also evaluated the solutions chosen by the translators, at times comparing them with his own translations. The article presents a critical analysis of Tretiak’s comments to two translations, “The Corsair” and “Lara,” which allowed him to conclude that the best Polish translator of Byron was Julian Korsak, and the worst, Antoni Edward Odyniec.

W roku 1924 nakładem Biblioteki Narodowej ukazał się tom powieści poetyckich Goerge’a Byrona w opracowaniu Andrzeja Tretiaka. We wstępie oraz licznych przypisach Tretiak uzasadnił wybór konkretnych przekładów i uszeregował je pod względem jakości, jednocześnie wskazując na błędy tłumaczy oraz pozostawione przez nich naddatki. Badacz skupił się również na ocenie wybieranych przez tłumaczy rozwiązań, czasami zamieszczając dla porównania własne wersje niektórych fragmentów. Artykuł prezentuje krytyczną analizę komentarzy Tretiaka do dwóch przekładów: Korsarza i Lary, prowadzącą do weryfikacji tezy badacza, według której najlepszym polskim tłumaczem Byrona był Julian Korsak, a najgorszym – Antoni Edward Odyniec.

The paper brings an analysis of the new Polish translation of Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland by Grzegorz Wasowski, published as Perypetie Alicji na Czarytorium. By defining the translation strategy followed by the translator and pointing to possible reasons for this choice and its consequences, the author enters into discussion with the translator. Wasowski claims that „it is not possible to do it better than the previous translators – but it is possible to do it differently”. This leads to the eternal question about limits of translation and to the conclusion that at the time when reading the text is considered as its interpretation (and hence a translation is a translation of an interpretation, and the reception of the translation is an interpretation of the interpretation) each new interpretation becomes a significant element of the translation series.

Autorka analizuje nowy polski przekład przygód Alicji, pióra Grzegorza Wasowskiego, wydany po tytułem Perypetie Alicji na Czarytorium. Określając przyjętą przez tłumacza strategię translatorską, zwraca uwagę na jej możliwe przyczyny i skutki oraz podejmuje dyskusję z autorem przekładu. Propozycja tłumacza – „lepiej [niż poprzednicy] się nie da, ale może inaczej?” – prowadzi autorkę do ponownego postawienia odwiecznego pytania o granice przekładu, jak również do wniosku, że w czasach odczytania tekstu jako jego interpretacji (ergo przekładu jako przekładu interpretacji i odbioru przekładu jako interpretacji interpretacji), każda kolejna interpretacja jest wartym uwagi ogniwem serii przekładowej.
