Mocne i słabe strony uczniów z zespołem Williamsa

Zespół Williamsa jest rzadkim zaburzeniem genetycznym, które oprócz licznych konsekwencji medycznych (m.in. nadzastawkowe zwężenie aorty, problemy związane z nerkami, tarczycą, prawidłową postawą ciała) charakteryzuje się specyficznym profilem funkcjonowania poznawczego oraz społeczno-emocjonalnego. Niniejszy artykuł ma na celu prześledzenie mocnych i słabych stron uczniów z zespołem Williamsa. Osoby z zespołem Williamsa przeważnie przejawiają niepełnosprawność intelektualną w stopniu lekkim lub umiarkowanym. Jednakże niższa sprawność umysłowa nie determinuje negatywnie ich możliwości rozwoju i edukacji. Obserwacje, relacje rodziców i nauczycieli oraz doniesienia z piśmiennictwa potwierdzają, iż osoby z zespołem Williamsa mimo niepełnosprawności intelektualnej przejawiają wiele uzdolnień, które wcześnie wykryte i rozwijane mogą pozytywnie wpłynąć na powodzenie podjętej edukacji szkolnej. Artykuł prezentuje najczęściej spotykane mocne strony rozwoju poznawczego oraz społeczno-emocjonalnego osób dotkniętych zaburzeniem. Jednocześnie akcentuje te aspekty rozwoju, które dzieciom z zespołem Williamsa mogą sprawić szczególne trudności w funkcjonowaniu w roli ucznia.

Williams syndrome is a rare genetic disorder, which, in addition to numerous medical consequences (e.g. supravalvular aortic stenosis, problems with kidneys, thyroid and correct posture), is characterized by a specific profile of cognitive and socio-emotional functioning. This article aims to investigate the strengths and weaknesses of students with Williams syndrome. People with Williams syndrome often have mild or moderate intellectual disabilities. Lower mental ability, however, does not influence adversely their potential development and education. Observations, accounts of parents and teachers, and many reports confirm that despite intellectual disability, people with Williams syndrome demonstrate many talents which, if discovered and developed early enough, could positively affect the success of school education. The article presents the most common strengths of the cognitive and socio-emotional development of individuals affected by this disorder. At the same time, it emphasizes those aspects of development that may cause particular difficulties at school in children with Williams syndrome.
