Asymetrię funkcjonalną mózgu zwykle bada się uwzględniając podział na lateralizację motoryczną i sensoryczną. Niniejszy artykuł prezentuje aktualny stan wiedzy na temat lateralizacji wśród naczelnych z wyłączeniem człowieka. Lateralizacja motoryczna u tych ssaków jest dotychczas najlepiej zbadana. Natomiast wciąż niewiele jest badań z zakresu lateralizacji sensorycznej, chociaż zestawy eksperymentalne wykorzystywane w takich badaniach nie są skomplikowane, a sama procedura jest stosunkowo prosta. Istnieją badania, których wyniki świadczą o obecności lateralizacji różnych funkcji w obrębie danej populacji. Z drugiej jednak strony pewna część cech świadczących o występowaniu dominacji półkulowej w obrębie populacji ujawnia się tylko u indywidualnych osobników. Wyniki zależą od przyjętej metodologii, a nawet aparatury badawczej, co może mieć bezpośredni związek z rozbieżnością wyników. Taki stan rzeczy wymaga dokładnej analizy.

Functional asymmetry of the brain is usually examined by taking into account the distinction between motor and sensory lateralization. This article presents the current state of knowledge on the lateralization of non-human primates. Motor lateralization in these mammals is by far the most studied. In contrast, there is still little research on sensory lateralization, although the experimental set-ups used in such studies are not complicated, and the procedure itself is relatively simple. In some studies, the results indicate the presence of lateralization of different functions within a given population. On the other hand, a part of characteristics indicative of the presence of the hemispheric dominance in a population is only revealed in individual subjects. The results depend on the adopted methodology, and even research equipment, which may have a direct relationship with the divergent results. This situation requires careful analysis.
