An identity of a political group is a multidimensional phenomenon and cannot be reduced to axiological declarations. The Left is going through a crisis of identity, not only in Poland. The symptoms are, among others, the ideological and intellectual surrender in face of the neoliberal narrative or accepting the one-sided, negative interpretation of the history of the Left, including the experience of socialism. The identity of a political group on the one hand requires permanent reconstruction, but on the other it needs to be defended. In the case of the Left what is visibly lacking is the defense of its traditional values, which are positively verified by the current crisis of capitalism. The values are not separate from the social and political practice or social interests. They can be interpreted as a generalization, an essential synthesis of social interests on various levels of the organization of social life. Values and interests are not merely the motivational side of politics. They also form an analytic category, allowing for unveiling the functional aspect of social phenomena. Similarly, leftism is not only a moral stand or a type of social sensitivity. It is a cognitive disposition too. The debate about the identity of the Left, just like the analysis carried out in the field of political sciences, should not refrain from the class paradigm in explaining various phenomena. Especially today it seems that the usefulness of class-related explications of social and political contradictions is growing, even more so, if we consider their global context.
The current left-right dichotomy permanently organizes the perception of politics by the Polish society. This thesis is confirmed both in academic discourse as well as in the results of public opinion polls. In that context, it becomes extremely important to determine the understanding of the left and the right in relation to the electoral preferences of the Poles. The thesis and the hypotheses were verified in a process of analyzing the variables obtained in the present study, carried out in 2008–2015 on a representative sample of the adults. The results partially confirm the thesis. Compatibility between the understanding the left-right dichotomy and the characteristics of the doctrines depends on the electoral preferences of the respondents, but not for followers of all analyzed batches. The most consistency and compatibility with the model of doctrinal understanding of these concepts can be found in the preferences of the Democratic Left Alliance electorate. In the Law and Justice electorate, the understanding of the analyzed concepts is incomplete and only partially consistent with the declared right wing preferences, whereas, the biggest ideological disorientation can be noted among supporters of the Civic Platform. Undoubtedly, the voters’ perception of the political scene through the lens of the division between the left and the right is still effective and valid.
Interpretation of Polish political divisions is difficult, if one takes as a reference the traditional division into left wing and right wing politics. Similar difficulties are caused by a phenomenon emerging in all European democracies described as populism. The essay presents a perspective that allows to combine both problems by offering one explanation. It reveals how the main Polish division axis, perpendicular to the traditional left wing-right wing axis, is part of a phenomenon present in other countries. This interpretation also explains the nature of the Polish movements known as populist ones.
Autor prezentuje różnice w poglądach i wartościach ideologii lewicowej i prawicowej.

The author presents differences in the views and values of the left and right wing ideologies. He shows the variety of assumptions and attitudes towards specific issues and goals by referring to the traditional, dichotomous distinction. The author focuses on the political identifications of the youth according to their declarations. Most of them are politically alienated and unable to clearly define their political views. Few are members of political parties, political organizations or social movements. The article presents reconstructed proposals and values of two, well-known youth political associations. Both have radical and distinct ideological preferences. The author analyses their critical attitudes towards democracy and a recipe for its deficits. Despite their stand for the true realization of democracy, both groups fight for different social order

In the political sphere, two antinomous attitudes towards the nature are permanently present. The first one is characteristic of the left-wing and the second one of the right-wing. The article explains the content and source of these attitudes by referring to Shalom H. Schwartz's psychological value theory (SVT) and the circular meta-value model created on the basis of its adaptation.
Patrząc z perspektywy obserwatora zewnętrznego, polski spór o ustawę zasadniczą z 1997 r. dotyczy przestrzegania obowiązujących norm konstytucyjnych i bardziej ogólnie, reguły praworządności.

From the perspective of an external observer, the Polish dispute over the 1997 Constitution concerns the question of compliance with the applicable constitutional norms and more generally, the rule of law. However, looking at this dispute through the prism of axiology, it is possible to put forward the thesis that both sides of the political conflict (the government and its opposition) instrumentalised the ‘fight for the constitution’, treating it as one of the tools for achieving political goals. Those taking part in it pursued opposing political values, while the constitution itself, the rule of law and the hierarchy of legal acts were treated instrumentally. The aim of the article is to explain the sources of conflicting attitudes towards the 1997 Basic Law. The applied theoretical basis of the article and the reference point for the analysis of the conflict is the circular model of political values.
Democratic socialism is perceived in this article as a return to the orthodox socialist thinking. It is conflicted with a mainstream identitarian left, even if cannot reject heritage of the 1960s. Democratic socialism is focused on interest of the working classes, which is an antidote against center liberalism, liberal left and gaining more and more popularity populist movements. Text is devoted to outline an idea of democratic socialism and its strong and weak dimensions.

The aim of this article is to undertake a quantitative and qualitative analysis of the value of freedom in terms of its presence in the political agendas of those electoral committees that exceeded the electoral threshold in the 2019 elections to the Polish Parliament. In the light of the applied method of analysis of political values (the circular model) and the results of the 2018–2019 European Social Survey, the hypothesis h1 was set, according to which the southern value of freedom within the community will dominate over the northern value of individual freedom in the agendas. To assess political values, the research used a comparative method, quantitative and qualitative content analysis, as well as a circular model. Hypothesis h1 has been verified positively in part because many references to social policy and equality were identified in the agendas, with the committees' postulates appeared as freedom in the positive variant.

W świetle zastosowanej metody analizy wartości politycznych (modelu kołowego) i wyników Europejskiego Sondażu Społecznego z lat 2018-19 postawiono hipotezę h1, zgodnie z którą w programach południowa wartość wolność w ramach wspólnoty będzie dominować nad północną wolnością jednostki. W badaniach zastosowano metodę porównawczą, ilościową i jakościową analizę treści, a do oceny wartości politycznych wykorzystano model kołowy. Hipoteza h1 została zweryfikowana pozytywnie częściowo, ponieważ w programach zidentyfikowano wiele odniesień do polityki socjalnej i równości, które w postulatach komitetów występowały w charakterze wolności „do”.
The object of this article is to analyse the presence of the metavalue of equality in the agendas of the political parties that brought representatives to the Polish Parliament as a result of the 2019 elections. The aim is to determine the attitude of these groupings towards equality. The article has a parallel methodological aim, which is to demonstrate the possibility (and, at the same time, the necessity) of studying political values both quantitatively and qualitatively. This seems important in political science analysis, as establishing the attitudes of a given party towards values facilitates the positioning of that entity within party families or existing ideologies. The theoretical basis of the article is the circular metavalue model, supporting the analysis of the axiological layer in politics.

The paper identifies (selected) reasons and strategies of removing the notion of class from Polish critical-literary discourse after 1989, especially a certain tradition of non-Marxist leftist criticism defined by Maria Janion, Kinga Dunin and Igor Stokfiszewski. The paper shows how a general vision of the world and politics implicitly outlined in the works of those critics excludes the possibility to meaningfully use the notion of class.

Artykuł wskazuje, w jaki sposób ogólna wizja świata i polityki implicytnie szkicowana w pracach wymienionych krytyków wyklucza możliwość znaczącego wykorzystania pojęcia klasy.
After Władysław Broniewski’s death, Mieczysław Grydzewski focussed on, in his opinion, the controversial spelling of the word “bóg” (god) in the poem Zagłębie Dąbrowskie with which Polish readers were very much familiar. The poet stated his non-religious views long before his début. Throughout his literary career he consistently applied the all-lower case spelling of the word “bóg” (god). His motivation was not to act against the established principles but despite the spelling rules that existed in Polish. His intention was not to be blasphemous but to exclude himself from the oppressive principle that considered the existence of a monotheistic “god” as something certain and indisputable. In the years after the watershed year of 1989 some editors and researchers even considered Broniewski’s spelling of the word as something imposed by the Stalinist and communist censorship and thus tried to amend it.

Today in Europe we are witnessing a populist turn, we could even speak of a “populist moment” that signals the crisis of neoliberal democracy. According to Chantal Mouffe, “the populist moment” is the expression of a set of heterogeneous demands, which cannot be formulated in traditional right/left frontier. The battles of our time will be between right-wing and left-wing populism. Although the current state of liberal societies appears to favor the development of a Right project, Mouffe proves that just a left-wing one can uphold any kind of radicalisation of democracy. The aim of this paper is to examine the reasons for the increasing success of populist parties in European countries and to consider whether the way the present crisis is manifesting is conducive to the growth of a populist narrative, especially in its right-wing variant.

The aim of the article is to give arguments against the presence of three stereotypes in political science concerning leftism, centrism and rightism. The first one involves the classification of political entities by indicating their place on the left-centre-right axis. The second is based on the belief that leftism, centrism and rightism can be narrowed down to specific levels of competition (e.g. views on the economy or religion). The third stereotype is “dogma” that the conflict over political values was initiated during the French Revolution. The author explains his position with reference to the psychological theory of Shalom H. Schwartz and the circular matrix of meta-value.
The case of Poland perfectly illustrates the scale of discrepancies between researchers who, on the one hand, criticize the specific nature of the Polish version of the left-right split, but on the other emphasize its important role in the process of identifying political and social actors and the ability of dichotomy to organize political life. Political actors define themselves in a specific way, allowing voters to recognize these acts of self-positioning and rely on them to make electoral decisions. The purpose of this paper is to problematize these divergences in two ways. First, by showing that the origin of this ‘problem’ lies in the assumptions underlying the theory of rational choice. It is claimed that it is the positivist ontology and epistemology underlying the paradigm of rational choice that produced ‘the problem’, which – from the perspective of interpretative approaches – constitutes an inherent part of political life. Secondly, by applying the assumptions of constructivism to the study of the left-right division in order to investigate the role of dichotomy in the political communication processes and construction of political order.

Po wtóre, poprzez zastosowanie do badaniapodziału lewicowo-prawicowego założeń konstruktywizmu w celu zbadania roli, jakie pełni omawiana dychotomia w procesach komunikowania i konstruowania porządku politycznego.

The article presents the research results concerning the attitude of Poles towards the presence of the Church in public life. The research was conducted in 2019 on a national sample size (n = 2110) based on stratified quota sampling method. The majority of the surveyed supported the division of the Church and state, at the same time accepting the presence of Christian values in the activities of state institutions. The surveyed definitely disagreed with the statement that the Church may support particular candidates in elections. The declared political preferences of the respondents proved to be significant, as well as wealth and place of residence. The supporters of the division of Church and state were more frequently respondents with leftist preferences rather than rightist, wealthier rather than poorer, and residing in cities rather than in the country.

Some leftist intellectuals distance themselves from local activism and accuse it of neglecting political goals and being insensitive to cultural problems. Their critique of activism is based on patterns drawn from modernization discourse and often reveals classism toward the poorer strata of society. The deprecation of local activism is linked to the shift in traditional leftist discourse and its refocusing on cultural problems. Furthermore, it is associated with the political development of the metropolitan middle class. The radicalization of demands in the cultural sphere to politically win over the middle class means that, from the perspective of local communities, leftist discourse loses its credibility as a force capable of systemic change and poverty reduction. In addition, a leftist critique of local activism often repeats the value-laden models that were used during the systemic transformation of the 1990s and served at the time as an ideological justification for exploitation and middle-class supremacy. All this makes the leftist critique of local activism a de facto class critique, conducted in the interests of the middle class.
The text is devoted to scientific and journalistic achievements of Marek “k-punk” Fisher. The author tries to show the originality of thought of the English theorist of culture and his contribution to the critical reflection on contemporary cultural phenomena. Fisher gained popularity in 2009 with the book Capitalist Realism: Is There No Alternative. He published in such magazines as The Guardian, The New Statesman, The Wire. In particular, he was interested in popular culture. The researcher and academic lecturer — with counter-cultural background — was often involved in defending the interests of the working class. The idea of the article is to familiarize the Polish reader with the concepts of Fisher, which are especially connected with the thought of Jacques Derrida.
