The Aegean list has many different interpretations, for example the explanation of toponyms as a result of a military itinerary. This article discusses the possibility of a symbolic perception of this monument and tries to date the toponyms to the reign of Thutmosis III.

In late antiquity, the Christian thinkers were not too much interested in the old age from the theoretical point of view. What made the old age for the classical thinkers a fault was – for the Christians – a life purpose since it highlighted the primacy of spirit. Jerome – an excellent expert on classic literature – many times touches upon the issue of the old age in his writings; however, he writes about it in the Christian vein, not in the light of the classical criteria.

In this article, I have focused on eight prose letters in “Zabawy Przyjemne i Pożyteczne”. The first two are by Franciszek Bieńkowski and concern the issue of good education – good treatment for people with lower social status. The next four letters are the correspondence of three great figures of the Renaissance: the Polish king Stefan Batory, his secretary and statesman Jan Zamoyski and the distinguished Italian humanist Antoni Muret. These letters, coming from the 16 th century and written in Latin, were translated by Józef Koblański in the 70s of the 18th century. The texts are examples of traditional epistolary art based on ancient principles. The seventh letter of unknown authorship compliments the reforms of the National Education Commission and polemizes with its opponents. The deliberate form of the letter used to promote a state educational institution and to argue with the critics of its reforms suggests that it is a letter falsified for the promotion of the social good of universal and unified education. The name of the addressee of the letter has not been specified what makes the correspondence general and illustrative in character. The last letter is basically a preface to the Polish edition of a well-known book of French doctor – Samuel Tissot. The book is entitled The Council for the People and concerns the principles of healthy living. The author of the letter – Grzegorz Piramowicz – enumerates the advantages of the book and the merits of her author and praises those who translated the book into Polish. The prose letters discussed in this article which were published in “Zabawy Przyjemne i Pożyteczne” present a large variety of themes and topics brought up in the periodical starting from current issues to the examples of early Enlightenment literature and culture.

Non-typical letter activities and their effectiveness in foreign language lessons – EFL secondary school students’ perceptions The main aim of this article is to verify the effectiveness of non-typical lesson activities, involving the completion of a letter, in classroom conditions; and in implementing modern approaches to foreign language learning and teaching. Apart from presenting theoretical information on the notion of a letter and the concept of effectiveness in language education, the following account also provides insight into letter-based practical activities and identifies some consequences of their application in EFL classes. It delineates the opinions of secondary school students who, in an anonymous questionnaire, expressed their views on the letter activities offered to them in their lessons. Their opinions provide evidence in support of the content and concepts distinguished and discussed in the theoretical part of this paper.

Between the years 1809–1812 Jan Potocki exchanged letters with his niece Maria of the Rzewuski family who, at the time they started their correspondence, married Jarosław, the son of Józefina née Mniszech and Stanisław Szczęsny Potocki. Only Jan Potocki’s letters survived: they are well written, brilliant, absorbed both with book knowledge and life wisdom. The author of the sketch concentrates, however, not on their stylistic and content matter issues, but on the way the letters were handed over. The Ukrainian ways were in poor condition, and the tzarist post far from functional. Thus, letters reached their addressees as delayed, and often did not reach them at all. In view of that, Potocki and the recipient of his letters did not use it and employed servants, Jewish friends, and members of closest family to deliver the correspondence. The two letter writers constantly informed one another when and who would deliver letters. They told in confidence about temporary problems with a person to do the delivery, etc., and this issue is well developed in the epistles, giving it additional attractiveness.

Przedmiotem artykułu są właściwości fonetyczne i fleksyjne języka familijnego Joachima Lelewela. Podstawę materiałową stanowi dwutomowy zbiór korespondencji pisanej z wielu miejsc pobytu historyka w różnych okresach jego życia do rodziców i rodzeństwa.

The subject of the article are phonetic and inflexive properties of the family language of Joachim Lelewel. The analysis combines the sociolinguistic perspective with the historical and linguistic perspective. Substantial basis consists in two volumes of correspondence written in many places visited by the historian at different stages of his life to his parents and siblings. The analysis was conducted in a two fold manner — the excerpted phenomena were referenced back to the resources of the general Polish language system contemporary to the writer and to the north-borderland dialect and to the masovian dialect. The basic distinction of Lelewel’s family language in field of phonetics and inflection is its variants and presence of archaic and regional elements.

The purpose of the article is to characterize syntactic and word-formation phenomena that appear in the family language of Joachim Lelewel. The language material originates from letters addressed to his family, which were included in Żupański’s two-volume publication. The sociolinguistic and historical-linguistic perspectives were combined in the interpretation of language phenomena. Due to the fact that Lelewel’s idiolect was influenced by several varieties of Polish, the description of the properties of both systems required a confrontation of research material with monographic studies and lexicons dealing with general Polish of the 18 th and 19 th centuries as well as publications devoted to the northeast variety and the Masovian dialect. The distinguishing feature of language from the researched mail is the occurrence of variant forms at both characterized levels of the grammar system and the ease of creating occasionalisms. Additionally, the relationships of Lelewel’s family language were confirmed with colloquial and dialectal Polish – Masovian and North-Eastern Polish – with which archaic language of his letters should also be associated.
