The article examines letters written by Stefan Themerson and exchanged with his years-long friend Bertrand Russell. By bringing the reader closer to political and social questions discussed by the correspondents the author of the article takes note of the character of “the desire for influence”, which may be mentioned in the case of this particular relation. The category applied by H. Sroka as a reversal of the Harold Bloom conception simultaneously introduces a new comprehension of intellectual and aesthetic independence thematized by the writer. An analysis of source material is preceded also by information about the range of the archive within which particular letters and other artefacts about Russell – collected by the avant-garde artist / author (i.a. press cuttings, invitations to parties/receptions, photographs, etc.) – function.

August Cieszkowski junior’s letters to Marian Zdziechowski from the years 1907–1913 Marian Zdziechowski has long been a big absentee in Polish humanities, even though he played a significant role in the intellectual life of the half of the century rich in cultural and political turns. His sensitivity and sensitiveness to the novelties of the intellectual trends of the epoch let him diagnose the contemporary human condition fairly quickly. They also allowed for him to accurately point to the necessities of the moment, both within the historical and religious fields. Zdziechowski had a particular ability to openly look at man, religion, history and philosophy, hence the possibility to acquaint oneself even with just a small part of his correspondence may prove extremely valuable. Cieszkowski junior’s letters to Marian Zdziechowski from 1907– –1913, that are presented here, are the source of information on Zdziechowski’s interest in Polish Romanticism and the bases and inspirations of Polish philosophy of the period. These letters bring the addressee closer to the reader, which is characteristic of correspondence in general. The reading of these letters makes us direct witnesses to the views expressed in them and discussions relevant to the letters’ recipient. The issues addressed in the letters concern mostly the origins of Polish messianism, Towianism and its possible influence on Zygmunt Krasiński and the philosophy of August Cieszkowski, the question of the Slavic Idea and the way of perceiving Russia.

Saint Augustine distinguished six periods of human life: infancy (infantia), childhood (pueritia), adolescence (adolescentia), young adulthood (iuventus), middle age (gravitas) and old age (senectus). Each of those periods has a perspective. Only in old age there is lack of it. Augustine makes the examination of conscience. Sentimental mood appears in the mail from the Saint Jerome, who poses himself as an old man in the opposition to Augustine as a young man, making allusions to ancient literature and his age. Exchange of letters between the Fathers of the Church records Augustine’s respect toward an old man, the monk. The entire reality is in continuous motion, as you can see in a simple anthropological observation of different periods of human development: childhood (pueritia), adolescence (adolescentia), young adulthood (iuventus), old age (senectus). The latter closes the death. Old age is a common weakness (communis infirmitas) of mankind. Augustine complained frequently on the impending old age, which according to ancients starts with 60 year old.

This article discusses the role of verbal politeness formulas in epistolography from the second half of the 18th century and the first half of 19th century. The authentic letters have been chosen from various classes of writers: landed gentry, bourgeoisie, soldiers, literary and artistic circles. The paper analyses opening and closing acts of linguistic etiquette in this letters. There are also comparisons with pointers in model letter-writers published in analysed period. Conventional verbal formulas, contrary to recommendations included in these letter handbooks, were still commonly used in letter closings. There were very rarely used in salutations, which was also continuation of Old Polish epistolographic tradition.

This article presents the concept of joy in surviving more than 90 letters of St. Ambrose of Milan. As it is clear from the above analysis of St. Ambrose’s letters, he included in them broad and deep reflections on a joy. Certainly the vocabulary that was used by Bishop of Milan to describe the phenomenon of joy reflects the richness of this phenomenon. The variety of topics, context, sources of joy prsented in his letters show the importance of joy in the life and work of the Bishop of Milan. He appreciates the earthly joy, drawing from ordinary, earthly life, but beyond it he submits the spiritual joy, „joy of the heart” (iucunditas cordis), which comes from God, the Giver of wisdom.

The presented paper discusses the issue of faith in St. Ambrose’s letters. According to him, there is nothing more important than faith and therefore he refers repeatedly in his correspondence to various issues related to faith. So Ambrose’s letters are the perfect practical complement to his dogmatic and exegetical works. The above article on the basis of the reading of his letters shows the faith as a gift to be developed and improved, having the source in the Scriptures; richness of faith and its reference to other virtues and the Christian faith in relation to Jews and Gentiles are shown as well.

This text is a review of selected ways of defining autobiography and biography, showing the specificity of each genre of personal writing, as well as indicating points of contact and exposing mutual dependencies. The (auto)biographical theories of e.g. Małgorzata Czermińska, Phillipe Lejeune, George Mish combined with theoretical approaches to biography by Jerzy Jarniewicz, Lucyna Marzec, Michał Paweł Markowski, complemented by a gender component, not omitting also the specificity of letters as a genre more strongly related to autobiography than biography, served to indicate the reasons for the permanent attractiveness of personal document literature. Moreover, by taking into account narrative theories of identity, an attempt was made to reconstruct possible constructions of the (autobiographical) subject. The whole article (in an extended version) was delivered as an inaugural lecture during the opening of the Biography and Autobiography Research Workshop at the Faculty of Polish Studies of the Jagiellonian University.

Teorie (auto)biograficzne, np. Małgorzaty Czermińskiej, Phillipe’a Lejeune’a, Georga Mischa, połączone z teoretycznymi ujęciami biografii Jerzego Jarniewicza, Lucyny Marzec, Michała Pawła Markowskiego, uzupełnione o komponent genderowy, niepomijające również specyfiki listów jako gatunku mocniej związanego z autobiograficznością niż biograficznością, posłużyły do wskazania powodów stałej atrakcyjności literatury dokumentu osobistego. Ponadto, dzięki uwzględnieniu narracyjnych teorii tożsamości, spróbowano scharakteryzować możliwe konstrukcje podmiotu (auto)biograficznego. Tekst jest fragmentem wykładu inauguracyjnego wygłoszonego podczas otwarcia Pracowni Badań Biografii i Autobiografii na Wydziale Polonistyki Uniwersytetu Jagiellońskiego.
