Tomasz Cieślak-SokołowskiDepartment of Contemporary CriticismFaculty of PolishJagiellonian University The Return of Close Reading in Contemporary Interpretations of 20th Century LiteraturesAbstract  The present article offers an insight into contemporary discussions concerning the category of close reading. It is in such a context that the author is able to shed light upon the special status of such forms of contemporary literary criticism that do not attempt to change paradigms, but rather are organized by gestures of corrections and reconfiguration. Postulating the “return of close reading,” the author departs from the basic tenets of New Criticism to illustrate some of the more recent concepts of what close reading is today and how they affect the interpretation of contemporary works of literature and, by extension, texts of culture. Keywords: close reading, New Criticism, interpretation, 20th century literature Powroty do close reading we współczesnych lekturach literatury XX wieku  Streszczenie Artykuł skupia się na próbie opisania współczesnych dyskusji na temat kategorii close reading.

There are many definitions of Central Europe, but most of them consider the borders of this region to be unclear, vague and changeable; we also have a similar situation in the case of Central European identity. Author tries to answer the questions: does this identity exist? is it some kind of supranational identity or auto stereotype? She was searching for answer in Central European literature of the twentieth century and she found an inhabitant of this region is usually depicted in two ways: 1. as a defective, incomplete man who cannot transcend himself (this type has some subtypes) 2. as an intellectual, who did not undergo Americanization and who cherishes traditional European values. She also considers this Central European types of character as examples of borderland identity.

Author notes the problem of the relationship between the older prose writer and the young boy. This relationship has gone through various kinds of turmoil, which have been problematic over the work of Jarosław Iwaszkiewicz. Recently issued lists of two lovers are the basis for various theories. The author also tries to analyze individual scientific studies that address the issue of homosexuality in literature.

The article addresses the theme of unorthodox saints in Graham Greene’s novels – Brighton Rock and The Power and the Glory and also deals with the author’s attitude to religious problems, particularly his views on salvation and damnation. There is also a discussion of the question whether the title of “a Catholic writer” has been rightly used in Greene’s case. The first part of the paper presents the character of the whisky-priest from The Power and the Glory. Particular attention has been paid to the author’s use of two perspectives upon the figure of the priest: one shows the character in his mundane existence, with all his human weaknesses and vices, whereas the other view stresses the character’s moral and religious superiority which testifies to his sainthood. This point is argued with numerous references to the Bible and to the philosophy of Charles Peguy which underline the martyrdom of the sinful priest and his similarity to Jesus Christ. The second part of the article focuses on the figure of Rose from Brighton Rock, highlighting a contrast between the weakness of her character and the strength of her convictions. The fact that she is torn between good and evil has been pointed out as well as the power of her feelings which is the reason of both her fall and her salvation. Similarly to the analysis of The Power and the Glory, references to the Bible and to Peguy’s philosophy have been used in order to underline Rose’s motivation which was rooted in her love of God. The final part of the article presents similarities between the two characters; what they have in common is both a human, sinful nature as well as the ability to offer superhuman love and self-sacrifice. The conclusion of the article underlines the fact that although both characters have sometimes acted in the ways questioning the principles of faith and the teaching of the Church, they can be perceived as saints because of the superiority of their morality with regard to their love of God and love of their neighbours whose good they put above their own.
