The article briefly presents the historical background of emigration to Germany and the impact of political discussion on the change in the perception of emigrants to this country. Next, the connections of this discourse with the construction of literary theories will be shownfollowed by a few definitions explaining the title of the paper, the main motifs of the discussed literature and issues related to its reception.

In dem Artikel wird kurz der historische Hintergrund der Immigration nach Deutschland sowie der Einfluss der politischen Diskussion auf den Wechsel der Wahrnehmung der Migranten in diesem Land dargestellt. Anschließend werden die Auswirkungen dieses Diskurses auf die Herausbildung literaturwissenschaftlicher Theorien erörtert und literaturwissenschaftliche Begriffe zur Definition der Migrantenliteratur dargestellt. Des Weiteren werden die Hauptmotive der analysierten Literatur und Fragen ihrer Rezeption erklärt.

W artykule przedstawiono tło historyczne imigracji do Niemiec oraz wpływ dyskusji politycznej na zmianę postrzegania imigrantów w tym kraju. Następnie ukazano związki tego dyskursu z konstruowaniem teorii literaturoznawczych, a także przedstawiono kolejne pojęcia literaturoznawcze służące definiowaniu literatury imigrantów i wyjaśniono główne motywy omawianej literatury oraz kwestie związane z jej recepcją.

The essay deals with the phenomenon of so-called migrant literature in Germany and understands it as a construct whose meaning has been repeatedly questioned in recent years. The migrant-feature of literary texts is not considered to be their main attribute but rather as a discursive category which refers specifically to their reception. One of the main characteristics of the so-called migrant literature is however its linguistic hybridity (also called textual multilingualism) – the essay directs attention to this phenomenon in its analytical part, namely in the selected novels of Dariusz Muszer, Artur Becker and Matthias Nawrat. The author argues that the scale of the use of linguistic hybridity is related to the respective migrant generation i.e. authors who have emigrated to Germany as adults play more intensively with textual multilingualism (here the language is considered the protagonist in the novels – ’language virtuosity’"); whereas those who came to Germany as children use them more sparingly (the point is mainly about the ’virtuosity of narration’). The analysis is preceded by an overview of the state of research – with regard to so-called migrant literature in Germany, authors in Germany of Polish extraction, and finally language hybridity (or textual multilingualism) in inter- or transcultural literature.

Der Aufsatz beschäftigt sich mit dem Phänomen der sog. Migrationsliteratur in Deutschland und versteht es als ein Konstrukt, dessen Sinnhaftigkeit in den letzten Jahren immer wieder in Frage gestellt wird. „Das Migrantische“ der literarischen Texte wird nämlich nicht als deren Hauptmerkmal aufgefasst, sondern als eine diskursive Kategorie, die sich vornehmlich auf die Rezeption dieser Texte bezieht. Eines der Hauptmerkmale der sog. Migrationsliteratur ist aber ihre sprachliche Hybridität (textuelle Mehrsprachigkeit) – der Aufsatz ist in seinem analytischen Teil diesem Phänomen gewidmet und zwar anhand von ausgewählten Romanen von Dariusz Muszer, Artur Becker und Matthias Nawrat. Die Autorin vertritt die These, dass das Ausmaß der Verwendung sprachlicher Hybridität mit der jeweiligen Migrationsgeneration zusammenhängt: Intensiver spielen mit textueller Mehrsprachigkeit Autoren und Autorinnen, die bereits als Erwachsene nach Deutschland emigriert sind (hier wird die Sprache als Protagonistin der Romane aufgefasst – „Sprachvirtuosität“), diejenigen, die als Kinder nach Deutschland kamen, verwenden sie sparsamer (hier geht es vor allem um die „Virtuosität der Narration“). Der Analyse geht ein Überblick über den Forschungsstand voraus – in Bezug auf die sog. Migrationsliteratur in Deutschland, die Autorinnen und Autoren in Deutschland mit polnischem Migrationshintergrund und schließlich auch die Sprachhybridität (bzw. textuelle Mehrsprachigkeit) in der inter- bzw. transkulturellen Literatur.

Tematem artykułu jest fenomen tzw. literatury migracyjnej w Niemczech rozumianej jako konstrukt, którego zasadność już od wielu lat jest przedmiotem krytyki. „Migracyjność” tekstów literackich nie jest tu uważana za ich integralną cechę, ale za kategorię dyskursywną odnoszącą się przede wszystkim do ich recepcji. Jedną z cech charakteryzujących tzw. literaturę migracyjną jest językowa hybrydyczność – przedstawiona na przykładzie wybranych powieści Dariusza Muszera, Artura Beckera i Matthiasa Nawrata. Według autorki skala użycia hybrydyczności językowej zmienia się w zależności od pokolenia migracji: intensywniej korzystają z tekstowej wielojęzyczności Muszer i Becker, którzy wyemigrowali do Niemiec już jako dorośli (tu język jest jednym z bohaterów powieści – „wirtuozeria języka”), rzadziej sięga po nią Nawrat, który, wyjeżdżając z Polski, był dzieckiem (na plan pierwszy wysuwa się „wirtuozerię narracji”). Analiza poprzedzona jest przeglądem stanu badań literaturoznawczych dotyczących tzw. literatury migracyjnej w Niemczech, polskiej literatury migracyjnej w Niemczech oraz hybrydyczności językowej (wielojęzyczności tekstowej) w literaturze inter- i transkulturowej.

This article reflects on the textual constructions of identity and the image of the Free City of Gdańsk (Danzig) in Frank Meisler’s autobiography On the Vistula Facing East, 1996 (Zaułkami pamięci. Gdańsk–Londyn–Jaffa, 2014; An der Weichsel gegen Osten, 2016). The author was a British-Israeli artist born in 1925 in the Free City of Gdańsk. The narrative analysis conducted here explores how Meisler presents cultural entanglements in the Free City of Gdańsk and its diversified Jewish community. My aim is to examine his strategies for portraying the borderland experience, his multilingualism, and for incorporating the Jewishness into the matrix of the East-West relations. Meisler’s autobiography has been interpreted as an example of the literature of cultural borderlands and of post-factum Holocaust literature.

W artykule poddałam refleksji tekstualne konstrukcje projektu tożsamościowego oraz obraz Wolnego Miasta Gdańska w autobiografii wzrastającego tam artysty pochodzenia żydowskiego Franka Meislera zatytułowanej Zaułkami pamięci. Gdańsk – Londyn – Jaffa. Wychodząc od analizy narracyjnej, prześledziłam sposób portretowania kulturowego splotu Wolnego Miasta Gdańska i tamtejszej społeczności żydowskiej w jej zróżnicowaniu. Uwzględniłam zarówno kwestię ujmowania doświadczenia pogranicza i żydowskości, jak i różnice w ich przedstawianiu w stosunku do utartej matrycy postrzegania relacji Wschód–Zachód, a także wielojęzyczność jako motyw i strategię narracyjną. Tekst Meislera został ujęty w ramach literatury kulturowego pogranicza i postfaktograficznej literatury Holocaustu.
