In the literature for children and young people have always existed taboo topics. One of them is the problem of death and suffering. Topics considered by an adult to be difficult, it doesn’t have to be this same for a child, and art and appropriately selected stories can help tame the fears, troublesome thoughts (in line with the "pedagogy of death", in line with the "literature of darkness"). To "sad fairy tale" need to enable classic fairy tales created, eg. by the Brothers Grimm, as well as contemporary post-modern fairy tales (texts by Neil Gaiman). But books related to death and suffering are not only works of art (richly illustrated), but also popular scientific publications. The purpose of these texts is to present the child death issues, assistance in coming to terms with the loss and pain. Adult must show child the world as a whole, without undue simplifications to create humans of a certain sensibility, capable of empathy and understanding. The literature teaches how to called emotions and choose what valuable.

The article is an attempt to show different connections between modern science in 17th century and esthetics of Baroque. Culture progress had been connected with breaking the Renaissance rules of art – clarity and harmony, as well as with appearance of a new kind of art – varied, unclear and marvel. In both branches of knowledge erudition and necessity of getting to know as much as possible were the most important ideas; this became the background of particular Baroque occurrence: encyclopedism and erudition. The popular science literature genre known as scienta curiosa is strongly connected to those terms. The main subject of analysis is a treatise written by Wojciech Tylkowski, containing knowledge of mathematics, natural history and philosophy. Due to its form – which uses conceptual solutions, tricky, ridiculous questions and description of marvels, monsters and other curiosities – it is one of the most interesting examples of “practice esthetics” – using esthetics for popularization purposes.

The article attempts to prove that Darwinism in popular culture plays a role of a theory of everything. Bestselling authors of popular science such as Edward O. Wilson, Richard Dawkins and Bill Bryson have acquainted general public with the theory of evolution, and its newest facet — the Modern Synthesis. Darwinian paradigms, as defined by Thomas Kuhn, are also used in popular books on cosmology, sociobiology, psychology, and religious studies. Moreover, the Darwinian grand narrative of evolutional history shapes the way in which contemporary mass culture presents the history of our planet in numerous educational TV series. Last but not least, Charles Darwin himself has recently become a popular icon and the story of his life is remade in a growing number of fiction and non-fiction books and movies.
