“A Precious Pearl.” On Liturgical Development

Every liturgy grows. The liturgy of the Order of Preachers was no exception. In the 1200s, the friars faced the necessity to revise their customs, texts, and rituals. On the one hand, this situation shows how diverse the 13th-century Christianitas was, and on the other hand, it proved the presence of a desire for unity within the newly formed Order, a struggle to have all the members of the then-worldwide community pray according to the same form. The process leading to that “liturgical consensus” needed by the Preachers back in the 1200s resembles the axioms of the liturgical renewal in the 20th century. The article focuses on the history of the Dominican liturgical developments, highlighting the mindset of the 13th-century Friars Preachers facing changes in the area of prayer. In the context of debates surrounding the liturgy after Vatican II, the author provides a historical perspective in order to show similarities between both processes of liturgical renewal.

Każda liturgia się rozwija. Nie inaczej było z liturgią Braci Kaznodziejów, którzy w XIII wieku stanęli przed koniecznością rewizji zwyczajów, tekstów i rytów. Oczywiście, z jednej strony, objawia to różnorodność liturgiczną trzynastowiecznej Christianitas, z drugiej strony zaś jest świadectwem zmagania się o to, by nowo powstający Zakon – sięgający krańców ówczesnej Europy – posiadał wyłącznie jedną i obowiązująca wszystkich jego członków formę modlitwy. Proces dochodzenia do „liturgicznego konsensusu”, potrzebnego Kaznodziejom w XIII wieku, przypomina założenia odnowy liturgicznej z XX wieku. W niniejszym tekście, na kanwie historii rozwoju dominikańskiej liturgii, uwypuklona została mentalność, z jaką średniowieczni Kaznodzieje pochodzili do zmian w przestrzeni modlitwy. Wobec trwających dyskusji o liturgii post Vaticanum II warto uzupełnić ją o historyczną perspektywę, wykazującą wiele punktów stycznych ze współczesnymi dyskusjami i propozycjami.

The Good Friday Oration for Non-Christians in the Background of the 20th Century Liturgical Reforms

Celem niniejszej pracy jest próba porównania trzech wersji wielkopiątkowej modlitwy za niechrześcijan. Realizacja celu pracy jest możliwa dzięki zestawieniu oraz przeanalizowaniu poszczególnych oracji pod względem obecnych w nich sformułowań. Praca dzieli się na dwie części. W pierwszej kolejności podano brzmienie poszczególnych modlitw oraz przedstawiono ich historyczne uwarunkowania. W części drugiej dokonano właściwych analiz. W świetle przeprowadzonych badań można stwierdzić postępujące osłabianie pejoratywnego sposobu przedstawiania niechrześcijan w reformowanych modlitwach. Dąży się również do podkreślania elementów wspólnych dla katolików i niechrześcijan. Zauważalne jest także przeniesienie akcentów z wymiaru zbawczego na wymiar doczesny.

The paper is an attempt to compare the three versions of the Good Friday Solemn Intercessions for non-Christians. It was made possible by juxtaposing and analysing the prayers in the light of their particular phrases. The paper was divided into two parts. The first one shows the three prayers and their historical contexts, while the other analyses their contexts. As a result, the process of decreasing the pejorative way of presenting non-Christians could clearly be seen. There is also a tendency for emphasizing elements shared by Christians and non-Christians. Finally, the comparison of the versions emphasises the transition from the salvific dimension to temporality.
