Rural development is closely connected with the development possibilities of residential locations. Broken social ties are projected into its earlier development. The socialist way of life (from the end of the WW II until the end of the eighties) was ideologically formed by collectivist models. Social organisations were highly formalised and controlled from above. Thousands of new social organisations have emerged in the villages and in towns since 1989, mostly involving cultural, sports and social activities. Civil initiatives were slow in winning recognition in rural areas and some types of initiatives are still missing. A new impulse for their progress was the accession of the Czech Republic into the EU in 2004. Information is drawn from the sociological research projects of the Sociological Laboratory, Czech University of Life Sciences.

Basing on research carried out on a representative group of Poles, as part of a national research project called „Political preferences. Attitudes-Identities-Behaviours”, it can be concluded that respondents the most often point expressing their beliefs through petitions (23%), local initiatives (21%) and demonstrations (12%). Research shows that men more frequently than women express their opinions through petitions (54,2%-45,8%), local initiatives (54,3%-45,7%) and demonstrations (61,6%-38,4%). Inhabitants of villages and towns over 200 thousand people were nearly two times more active than citizens of medium-sized villages. Having at least a secondary school education definitely increases people’s activity (approx. 40%), more than having a vocational education (approx. 13%). Expressing views is also dependent on age because younger people do it more frequently than elder ones. The most indicated were individuals in the age group 25-34 (62%), more rarely although in comparable proportions people aged 18-24 and 35-44 while in the next age groups that activity drops significantly. People aged 18-24 and 45-54 the most willingly take part in demonstrations. People aged 25-34 sign petitions and engage in local initiatives. Among citizens in the age of 55 and more there is not evident diversity in the forms of participation. The differences in the behaviour of people with various views are also highlighted. Those who declare themselves as left wing prefer petitions (39%) against local initiatives (35%) and demonstrations (26%). Centrist voters the most often choose petitions (49%) against local initiatives (34%) and demonstrations (17%). And people who declare themselves as right wing mainly indicate local initiatives (43%) against petitions (36%) and demonstrations (21%). But those citizens, who could not determine themselves, the most often decide to petitions (49%) against local initiatives (32%) and demonstrations (19%). Taking under consideration declared political views there are no significant differences when it comes to membership in political parties, trade unions, non-government organizations and local associations. Greater disproportions are highlighted when comparing belonging to different types of organizations. Regardless of the opinions the most popular are local associations, followed by non-government organizations, trade unions, and the least political parties. In conclusion, it can be said that the political participation in Poland clearly indicates who is more frequent and who is more seldom willing to be active in this area. It seems to be an important clue for those wishing to take effective activities to increase the involvement of citizens.

Podstawę empirycznej części rozważań stanowiło badanie zrealizowane pod egidą jednej z agend Światowej Organizacji Zdrowia (WHO) – Centrum Rozwoju Zdrowia w Kobe. Obejmowało ono analizę studiów przypadków inicjatyw kierowanych do seniorów w lokalnych środowiskach dziesięciu wybranych krajów rozwijających się (Chile, Chiny, Iran, Liban, Rosja, Serbia, Sri Lanka, Tajlandia, Ukraina, Wietnam). Kluczowe kryterium wyboru analizowanych projektów stanowiło bezpośrednie zaangażowanie w ich realizację instytucjonalnych i pozainstytucjonalnych przedstawicieli społeczności lokalnych. Autor jako uczestnik (badacz) tego międzynarodowego przedsięwzięcia podjął próbę analizy możliwych do zaobserwowania przejawów senioralnej koprodukcji charakteryzujących poszczególne inicjatywy.

The article discusses the idea of co-production, understood as informed and intentional participation of citizens in the organisation and provision of public services in the context of the global ageing process, a phenomenon which necessitates actions aimed to secure the needs of older people. The basis for the empirical investigation was a study carried out under the aegis of a WHO agency, the Centre for Health Development in Kobe, Japan. It offers an analysis of the case studies of initiatives addressed to elderly people in the local communities of 10 selected developing countries (Chile, China, Iran, Libya, Russia, Serbia, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Ukraine, Vietnam). The key criterion in the selection of the analysed projects was direct involvement of institutional and non-institutional representatives of local communities in their implementation. As a participant (researcher) of this international survey, the author analyses the observable manifestations of silver co-production characterising the individual initiatives.

For centuries, the inhabitants of a small city like Wieliczka have built a culture whose sources should be sought in the workplace – the salt mine. However, today’s Wieliczka is much more diverse than in the past. Primarily, it is a popular tourist destination, attracting millions of tourists every year. In my article, I will try to answer the question of whether it is possible to capture elements of mining heritage in a touristic place like Wieliczka? In paper, I will present examples of how heritage is shaped by local enthusiasts of the salt mining in Wieliczka and in the vicinity. Attention will be focused on selected activities of one of the local associations – the Wieliczka Friends Club.
