The article presents an analysis of the amphora material from the excavation of grave no. 2 of the Scythian burial mound no. 7 near the village of Crihana Veche in the Republic of Moldova. In the burial mound of the local aristocrat, which was twice robbed in ancient times, along with the remnants of ornaments, weapons, and other objects used in the funeral ceremony, fragments of Greek amphorae were found (both in the burial and in the grave goods), which belonged to only one Greek center of production – Thasos. More than 27 Thasian amphorae in which expensive wine was brought in, as well as other ritual funerary objects, indicate that the man buried there had a special position in the local hierarchy. Also important for research are five amphora stamps on the handles of the Thasian amphorae, which confirm the dating of amphora fragments and indicate the exact sequence of activity of two Thasian magistrates, which previously did not have a basis of support. This funerary complex is singular for the fact that only Thasian amphorae of the same type were found in the burial (usually Heraclean amphorae were put in Scythian burials), which indicates the uniqueness of this complex in the territory between the Prut and Dniester Rivers, and the north-west Black Sea region as a whole.

Athenians paid much attention to the protection of oikoi and especially to those oikoi which faced the threat of extinction. This is the reason why the eponymous archon was appointed by the Athenian state so as to take care of family and inheritance issues. Demosthenes states the Athenian law about the magistrate’s obligations and there are two issues which are quite ambiguous. The first one is related to the exact content of the term “oikos” that was under extinction, while the second one is related to the exact way through which the magistrate offered his protection towards such oikoi. The article gives an answer to these ambivalent issues, underscoring the significant role of the magistrate regarding families and properties in classical Athens.

Polish landed gentry was once the backbone of national tradition. Every family had among its members land owners, officers, priests, lawyers, and public servants. Ignacy Dominik Radziszewski (1782–1853) followed this tradition. He lead the life of a typical nobleman, though enriched by numerous events connected with the stormy history of Poland. Ignacy Radziszewski was above all a patriot ready to serve the highest values. This is why he took part in Napoleon’s campaigns, in the uniform of a Polish officer, and later helped to mobilise the armed forces during the November Uprising. Earlier, he studied law, which later in his life allowed him to achieve the honourable title of magistrate in his district. The author of this article also mentions other people connected with Radziszewski in different ways, beginning with friendly and familiar relationships, and ending in the professional ones. The historical sources which constitute a base for these reflections have been examined very carefully. This has allowed to display some genealogical intricacies concerning also persons who were not the protagonists of the events here related. These discoveries may result useful to the authors of future studies on the history of the land gentry of the Solec district.
