Background. Medical tourism is considered a conscious human activity in which a traveller is aimed at getting health care to maintain better health or aesthetic look of their own body, combined with relaxation, regeneration of mental and physical power, exploring amenities and entertainment. The aim of the study was the analysis of adult women’s opinions on medical tourism and on cross-border healthcare. Material and methods. In the study, 89 adult women from Great Poland aged 40–60 took part. The results were collected by means of the author’s diagnostic survey. Results and conclusions. The researched people did not know the definition of medical tourism, they associated it with health tourism (wellness and spa). Medical tourism is becoming more and more popular. Low prices, a dedicated staff, high standards of medical care, and a central location are advantages of Poland. To make a reasonable choice, patients must have an access to all the information they need on health services abroad, so it is important to accept the law that implements directives on the application of patients’ rights in cross-border healthcare.

The constant global socio-economic development and the process of population aging in Western countries result in more and more people travelling abroad in order to improve their health. Health tourism is developing, which, apart from spa tourism or wellness tourism, includes also medical tourism. However, a problem arises whether medical tourism is a form of tourism constituting a natural and positive consequence of social processes or rather a negative phenomenon. The purpose of the article is an attempt to answer this question. The paper defines medical tourism and presents an analysis of the phenomenon itself, factors affecting its popularisation, people who participate in it, and the positive and negative consequences of its development. The effects of medical tourism development can be divided into macroeconomic ones, those related to the countries of tourists emission and reception, microeconomic ones, i.e. referring to companies (both tourist companies and medical service providers), and the effects on people who practice this type of tourism. The publication is an overview; mainly foreign literature was included.

Medical tourism is a well-established sector in developing countries, and attracts a significant number of tourists from developed countries. Medical tourism is a strong driver of economic growth, but some argue that this kind of tourism promotes inequality in terms of access to healthcare facilities in both developing and developed countries. Whilst research has been conducted on medical tourists travelling to South Africa, no research has focused on the geography of South Africans travelling abroad for medical tourist activities. This study therefore sought to obtain first-hand information from Indian-South African citizens who have partaken in medical tourism in India. Data was gathered through personal, semi-structured interviews conducted with 54 individuals. It was ascertained that the majority of the individuals interviewed in this study travelled to India primarily for medical treatment, while tourist activities were a secondary objective. A smaller proportion of interviewees travelled to India for vacation, with medical care being a secondary motivation, or an impulse due to the low cost of treatment and convenience. Medical tourism by Indian-South Africans travelling to India highlights various shortfalls in South African medical care, including a lack of treatment availability, a poorer quality of service, medical expertise abroad, and the higher cost incurred locally.

Medical tourism is no longer perceived as just a new socio-economic trend. Nowadays, various needs and reasons for travelling for health purposes can be realised in many different forms of tourism – to which the author draws attention by attempting to systematize the terminology of medical tourism. Too often this term is used synonymously with such concepts as health tourism, wellness tourism, and sanatorium tourism.

It is proved that twenty-first century tourism will become an essential element of the global economy and an export product of special significance. Undoubtedly, medical tourism may become such an export product in Poland. Medical tourism has already been named as a phenomenon of our times, as many researchers point not only to its huge potential, but also to the substantial role it plays in the economic development of a country. It is an effect of the reorganization of previous business company models. The aim of this paper is to recognize the medical tourism enterprise policy area and the gist of their innovations. Chosen examples are examined that reflect the problems. Results constitute the need for further research.

The growing importance of tourism in the world manifests itself in many areas of social and economic systems strongly impacting the economy, the quality of human life, and the natural environment. Medical tourists are playing a pivotal role in shaping the tourism industry. Although their primary intention is to seek medical treatment, they often maximize destination options by pursuing other visitation objectives such as side trips to tourist attractions or attending cultural events. At the same time, the interest shown by tourists contributes to the shaping of certain behaviors within a local community in a tourist area.

This article examines the concept of organizational maturity, with particular emphasis on the importance that it can play in medical tourism. First, the concept of organization is subjected to an interdisciplinary interpretation in the light of the Polish and international literature on the subject. The influence of this area of enterprise management on the decisions made and the shaping of the pro-quality policy of the enterprise is considered - noting that the continuous and comprehensive improvement of intra-organizational processes, decisions taken and monitored, and long-term planning are determinants of the level of organizational maturity and contribute to the implementation of planned activities, while effectively responding to the needs of stakeholders. Next, selected results of a qualitative study conducted among selected private medical institutions specializing in medical tourism are presented. Despite the relatively rich literature in the field of tourist and medical services, few studies have looked at the importance of quality in management in private healthcare entities and its significant impact on the purchasing decisions of tourist patients, with a simultaneous emphasis on entities serving foreign medical patients. The survey was carried out in 2021 using the IDI (Individual in-depth Interview) technique, with a purposive sample of Polish and Croatian clinics providing services in the field of medical tourism holding a significant position in their respective market.

The aim of this paper is to compare and critically discuss the statistics concerning the number of medical tourists in Poland. The official statistics office in Poland collects only part of the data covering the phenomena of medical tourism. If we compare the official sub-total data of the nonresidents visiting Poland due to obtain health services with the corresponding numbers cited in newspapers, we can see an enormous discrepancy. Based on an investigation of the demand site of medical tourism in Poland and the sub-total official date, we estimate that in 2016 the total number of medical tourists in Poland was approximately 155,000.

The paper reviews available literature on globalization processes in health services. The aim is to identify the main research challenges and basic trends in this area. The analysis is made with the use of SinceDirect, EBSChost, BMJ Journals, ProQuest Medical Library and MEDLINE-PubMed data and covers the 1990-2007 period. The author concludes that theoretical discussions and empirical studies on the globalization of health services are still at an early stage of development even though health services and related sectors have a considerable share in most countries’ GDP. The paper offers a modified version of a model for describing the influence of globalization on health. The author shows that the growing influence of globalization on national health care systems is accompanied by an increased share of the private sector in these systems. At the same time, countries are increasingly adopting measures to boost the role of private funds in financing their health care systems. Analyses show international medical services are almost exclusively provided by private businesses. This means that globalization is primarily benefiting private health service providers and private investors, the author says.

Poland is an attractive investment area due to its dynamic economic growth. Investors value skilful labour force as well as high level of education. They also seem to recognise the potential of productivity growth. Our country attracts investors owing to a large internal market. Foreign investors really appreciate reliable sub-suppliers and work ethics. Throughout the years the quality of communication infrastructure has improved. What is more, labour costs are relatively low comparing to our neighbours. Based on these facts, one shall ask if Polish companies providing services related to medical tourism need direct foreign investments. The purpose of this article is to answer this question. It also aims at discussing interdependence between medical tourism and the inflow of direct foreign investments.

Background. The number of foreign patients in pharmacies is relatively on the increase, which contributes to the development of medical tourism, especially of one of its categories – pharmaceutical tourism. This requires an estimation of the foreign patients segment, determination of the sociodemographic profile of the ‘pharmaceutical tourist’, identification of the tourist’s purchase-related behaviour, and indication of the prospects for the pharmaceutical tourism development. Materials and methods. The research concerned a randomtarget group of 167 pharmacies operating in the region of Southern Poland. An own survey was applied. Results. In the years 2012–2014, the number of foreign patients using the services of the pharmacies rose by over 13 500. These were mainly male patients, aged 31–40 (30.4%), coming from Great Britain (18.8%), Germany (16.3%), Russia (10.5%), and the Czech Republic (10.3%). Most of them arrived in winter. Over-the-counter drugs are a popular purchase (68%) and a patient’s average expense does not exceed PLN 250.00 (46%). Using hard arguments, 49.1% of the surveyed pharmacies representatives express no optimism about the development of medical tourism. Conclusions. The results of the research indicate that there is an urgent need to make diverse interventions on the market of medical tourism, including pharmaceutical tourism.

The rapid development of medical tourism started in 1990s and was soon followed by a growing interest of scholars in this phenomenon. However, the research on medical tourism cannot keep up with the pace of its development, and scientists still face a number of challenges which result from the lack of the following: the consensus on the actual name of the phenomenon, its explicit definition, reliable data on its scale, recognition of market mechanisms in terms of the supply and the demand. The article aimed at the presentation of terminology and definition problems related to medical tourism. It was also intended to identify the research gaps in the demand aspect of that phenomenon. As a result, five fields have been indicated where explanatory research should be carried out because their present recognition and understanding seems insufficient. The analysis has been carried out, based on the original review of scientific literature (Czakon 2013, p. 51) available at the Internet resources (first of all, the EBSCO publication database).
