Nauka historii na początku XXI wieku. Esej

The science of history, not only in Poland, faces serious dilemmas at the beginning of the 21st century, there being no indications that, similarly to its past status especially in the 19th century, it can aspire to the role of one of the major factors of social consciousness. Following the liberation (by far inconsistent and often mistrusted) of history as a science from rendering undue services of a non-pertinent nature it experienced and still does, erosive influences exerted by numerous theoretical trends and currents that put into question the validity and genuineness of the scientific character of history. Enormous progress in the field of heuristics and research organization (the latter disputable at times) does not always yield the expected fruits. The essay focuses on the “external” conditions and manifestations of the science of history in Poland, both of a positive and negative nature, only briefly touching upon some current research proposals. Then, on the example of medieval studies the author presents the current problems and achievements of this science, to show among others that many of the postulates and expectations of contemporary methodology and theory of history are actually realized in medieval studies. The concluding part brings reflections of a more general nature on the issue of contemporary place and tasks of the science of history.

The paper presents literary images of medieval women in four Middle English romances, viz. King Horn, Sir Isumbras, Havelok the Dane and Sir Gawain and the Green Night. Its aim is to identify some conventional patterns of representation of female characters in the literary works classified as different subtypes of the genre of romance, namely ancestral romance (King Horn, Havelok the Dane), homiletic romance (Sir Isumbras) and Arthurian romance (Sir Gawain and the Green Knight). After Sharon Farmer and other feminist critics, the concept of gender is interpreted as one of the major categories of difference in medieval English society. This argument is supported by the analysis of the construction of female characters in the romances in question. However, while it is important to remember that the society of medieval England was to a large extent male-governed and male-dominated, which is the reason for the apparent centrality of male protagonists in medieval English literature, the function of female characters in literary works of that period is not necessarily secondary. The paper focuses on the importance of women in presenting the protagonist’s genealogy and on selected strategies of representation, such as reversal of gender roles or marginalization of female characters. The essay attempts to demonstrate that the category of gender, as it is seen in the medieval texts, cannot be reduced to a simplified model of binary oppositions, since the romances also introduce the complexity of power relations and tensions between the sexes.

The paper provides a brief summary of the Old Norse Grettis Saga and examines it in terms of research aspects outside of the field of literary studies. It highlights the historical, cultural, social, and religious contexts of the work, giving explanation as to where indications of them can be found in the saga. At the same time it tries to explain some of the more obscure aspects, such as the supernatural elements, in order to give clarity to the method of interpretation. Vital information on the grouping of Old Norse sagas, as well as the importance of ancestry in the texts, are provided and elaborated. Definitions of key terms essential to understand the source material are provided and kept on a level clear to a reader not fluent in the topic. Categorizations of the mentioned saga genre are also provided, with the hope to spark interest in the vast variety of motifs and key aspects of the Old Norse sagas. Further suggestions for research outside of the field are presented; however, they are not taken up completely. The paper shows the Old Norse sagas as potent, yet often overlooked, literary works worthy of attention as possible research material in the field of humanities.

The authors presents various aspects of the functioning of the international medieval portal Ménestrel. This text was prepared as a paper for the Warsaw conference of the Mnestrel milieu, held at the Polish National Library, in 2014. The authors recounts the beginnings of the portal, its development, and the research fields that are of interest to its editors. The international character of the collaborators of the portal is emphasised, as well as the fact that all contributrs are volunteers working for the common cause. Thanks to their effort, M nestrel is counted among the most important medieval research and documentation projects on the Internet. One of the fi elds that has gained prominence among the Ménestrel group lately is digitisation of medieval manuscripts and making tchem accessible on the network.

63%
EN
This study deals with the influence of so called normalisation on Czech medievalist research in the 1970s and 1980s, examining the consequences of isolation imposed on research in Czechoslovakia with respect to new trends in its Western European counterparts, as well as stereotypical thinking, non participation in medievalist debates in the broader context, and the decline of topics that domi nated Czech medievalism in the 1960s. The article also considers how feelings of resignation influence conceptual thinking, linking it with the growth of subtopics during the period of normalisation. While medievalist research did gradually begin once more to thrive in the Czech environment of the 1980s, many problems – in the author’s opinion – were carried over in various ways to the post-1989 context, namely the insufficiency of methodological reflection, limitations with respect to theme, the marked absence of socio historical research, and a blind faith in the preservation of original sources.

Chris Wickham has undertaken a discussion about one of the most important problems of Italian medieval studies: the emergence of communes in Italian cities. The article presents Wickham’s theses, characterizes his instrumentarium, and places his study against the background of other works on the same subject published in last decades.

The article presents reflection on the presence of the nineteenth-century convictions and visions of the past in the Polish post-war medieval studies practiced on the historical ground. The nineteenth century was the time when modern critical historiography started to be created. For practical reasons the article discusses only the field of history, without referring to other fields that also practice medieval studies. The author emphasizes numerous historiographic references to the nineteenth-century paradigms of perceiving the past. One of them was the paradigm of describing the “national” past. What is also signaled in this study are rather archaic manners of describing the past in the post-war period and the utilitarian character of some historical studies.

The geopolitical changes in Central and Eastern Europe which began in 1989 influenced also changes in the status of the field of history. In an attempt to change the perception of the field, a turn to the Middle Ages could be observed, as the times of prosperity in the Kingdoms of Bohemia, Hungary and Poland could serve as an excellent foundation for building a national identity. Thus, the authors propose a complex picture of historically and artistically oriented Medieval Studies in Poland against the backdrop of the situation in Central and Eastern Eu‑ rope, trying to ascertain how and to what extent the events of 1989 influenced the status and development of the discipline. Thirty years after the Yalta Conference, what can be observed is a gradual process of opening the discipline onto new methodologies and technological changes, as well as realizing its capabilities, which were hitherto suppressed by the oppressive political system. The natural generational change contributes to solidifying practices which the youngest generation of art historians takes for granted. However, the influences of inertia, deeply-rooted complexes and post-mortem victory of communist propaganda cannot be omitted. For the ma‑ jority of academic centers in Poland, it is virtually paradigmatic to talk about art in a very nar‑ row geographical context, accompanied by the tendency to isolate phenomena with clear ties to the European context. Too often is art in Poland seen as an expression and a consequence of its peripheral status, while almost overlooking the uniqueness and originality of many artistic phenomena. Moreover, a vision of Poland as a homogenous entity in its contemporary borders persists in the subconscious of the society, which constitutes a serious hindrance in the spread‑ ing of knowledge and is often used as a tool in historical politics. In addition, it should be noted that, unfortunately, many good practices, such as the obligation of familiarity with the entirety of the literature on the subject, begin to disappear, perhaps in connection with the “publish or perish” mentality and the need to fulfill the obligations towards the academic institution. Para‑ doxically, then, the political upheaval of 1989 brought in the discipline of art history, as well as the field of humanities as a whole, both positive as well as detrimental changes.
