The paper studies the integration models used by Ukrainian migrants living in Poland and the resulting problems associated with the rivalry between historical narratives of the Ukrainians and the host community. The author’s work is based on the concept of cultural memory (Maurice Halbwachs, Aleida Assman) and the idea of the dynamic character of images of the past (Jeffrey K. Olik). The data for the study was collected during 30 in-depth interviews with the Ukrainian migrants and also from social networks, forums and open Internet resources. The study has revealed that the majority of the Ukrainian migrants seek to avoid the rivalry between historical narratives, arguing that they personally are not involved in it and events of the past are no longer actual in modern life. Close contacts with representatives of the host community contribute to the assimilation of the Ukrainians. Only a few of the interviewed respondents choose the Ukrainian historical narrative, however they are not going to throw their lot in with Poland. The paper also thoroughly discussed the factors contributing to the choice of one or another position.

Once they had settled in the Netherlands, Polish veterans seemed to perceive their new fatherland as a friendly environment, where they felt accepted and welcome at first. As time went by, more and more veterans realised they have difficulty in communicating their war experiences to the Dutch society. They felt being left aside and forgotten. They started as honorary citizens and ended as forgotten liberators. This article aims to explain when, how and why this shift took place and what historical and sociocultural factors were responsible for this change. It also looks at the way Polish veterans used their own war narratives and how their commemoration practices clashed with the dominant Dutch war remembrance culture

The purpose of the article is to show the specifics of the forest as a memorial site. The starting point is the story of the graves of Romuald Rajs "Bury’s" victims hidden in the forest. The issue of the location of their graves, and later – a form of commemoration, is an example of memory conflicts that often occur in areas with a complex history and heterogeneous ethnic structure, to which Podlasie belongs. The events of 1946 and their consequences for subsequent generations of the inhabitants of Hajnówka became the factual canvas for the crime story of Okularnik [The Mercedes W210] by Katarzyna Bonda, the interpretation of which is an essential part of the considerations contained in the article. The forest, due to its ambivalent attributes and cultural connotations, such as opacity, place of refuge/ threat, closeness/ strangeness, persistence/ changeability, turns out to be one of the key metaphors for describing difficult community memory, which it hides/ conceals and protects at the same time. The research perspective used in the article is memory studies. The category of necropolitics (within the meaning of Ewa Domańska) is also important.
