The profession of social worker is undoubtedly profession that requires professionalism, which takes into account both the technical and relational aspects. Social worker should be fluent in using legal regulations, knowledge of aid institutions, techniques and working methods, and, because he is the basic tool of social work, he should demonstrate appropriate features and skills, which make up the so-called “helper personality”. The article presents selected difficulties that may arise in contact and in the assistance relationship with people with mental disorders. On the one hand, a social worker should be able to read, feel and sympathize with the emotions of another person, and on the other, should be aware of their own emotional responses and their role in creating and running an assistance relationship.

Zawód pracownika socjalnego bez wątpienia wymaga profesjonalizmu, który uwzględnia zarówno aspekt techniczny, jak i relacyjny. Pracownik socjalny powinien biegle operować przepisami prawa, znajomością instytucji pomocowych, technik i metod pracy, a także jako partner w tworzeniu relacji pomocowej powinien wykazywać się odpowiednimi cechami i umiejętnościami składającymi się na tzw. osobowość pomagacza. W artykule przedstawiono wybrane trudności, jakie mogą się pojawić w kontakcie i w relacji pomocowej z osobami z zaburzeniami psychicznymi. Pracownik socjalny z jednej strony powinien umieć odczytywać, odczuwać i współodczuwać emocje drugiej osoby, a z drugiej powinien zdawać sobie sprawę z własnych reakcji emocjonalnych i ich roli w tworzeniu i przebiegu tej relacji.
