The position of Polish archaeology within the context of generally exercised practices in the investigated areas is presented. It has been claimed, that the practice which is generally applied, is culture-historical archaeology paradigm. This paradigm was shaped in the field of ethnology within German-language area, during the period in-between wars. Till not long ago it was practiced in the field of European continental archaeology. There have appeared, in the second half of 20th century, some elements of processual archaeology in Poland. Soon those elements, inspired by V.G. Childe’s theory, were given up. Nowadays we observe second turn in the direction  of culture-historical archaeology. This orientation is dominated by ethnocentric perspective and is characterized by cultural values, serving national “self-confirmation”. This culture-historical archaeology is situated on the pole opposing to post-processual archaeology, which accepts theoretical pluralism.

This text contains an interpretation of the intellectual activity of methodologists of archaeology from the Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań. The idea they implement is – in my opinion – a way of thinking: from an object to thinking about an object, addressed both to archaeologists who are not convinced of methodology and to representatives of cultural archeology, in order to finally signal their contribution to integrated humanities. I tried to highlight the effects of this activity in such a way that its real benefits for each of the recipients mentioned were visible.

This paper provides an overview of the scholarly thought of Leo Klejn (born 1.07.1927), a prominent Russian scholar. The discussion is based on Klejn’s selected works, first of all his monumental work ‘Трудно быть Клейном. Автобиография в монологах и диалогах’, translated into Polish as ‘Trudno być Klejnem. Autobiografia w monologach i dialogach’, Sankt Petersburg, 2010, pp 600. This paper looks at Klejn’s life, his lot, often dramatic, but most of all his creative and outstanding works in the field of archaeology, anthropology and philology within their historical contexts. It also examines the reasons behind addressing certain issues.
