In the paper some metatextual expressions (mówiąc językiem biblijnym and other ones) which refer to a given utterance and serve to say something about the utterance are observed. We examine a question in two bearings: syntactic and functional. Analized expressions co-occure with the main utterance and are used inside it. They signal a paraphrase. Puting the text into other words has a rhetorical implication.

Celem artykułu jest określenie wartości pragmatycznej metatekstowej obudowy staropolskiego dialogu. W polu obserwacji znalazły się wyrażenia, które rozpoczynają kwestię dialogową (np. ba, oto) i są reakcją na wypowiedź wcześniejszą. Ponieważ wątek ten nie był dotąd podejmowany w polskim językoznawstwie historycznym, autorka poprzedza analizę materiału refleksjami teoretycznymi. Odnosi się do lingwistycznego rozumienia metatekstu i wyodrębnia na tej płaszczyźnie jednostki języka, które współtworzą metatekstową warstwę dialogu w staropolskim dramacie. Analiza dotyczy zatem pragmatyki na poziomie „mikro” (wyrażenia), nie odnosząc się do tekstu. Uściślone są także tytułowe terminy: „replika” i „komentarz”. Ostatnia część artykułu to pragmatyczna analiza wybranych jednostek (ba i ot), która koncentruje się na odróżnieniu wyrażeń mających wartość komentującą (dodaną) od tych, które wyrażają tylko postawę modalną nadawcy.

The aim of the paper is to assess the pragmatic value of the metatextual frame of Old Polish dialogue. The field of observation includes expressions of introduction to a dialogue (ba, ot) and those of reaction to a previous utterance. Since this topic has not been considered in polish historical linguistic literature before, the author precedes the analysis of gathered material with theoretical reflections. The author refers to the linguistic understanding of metatext and isolates, on that ground, those units of language which take part in creating the metatextual layer of dialogue of Old Polish drama. Therefore, the analysis concerns pragmatics at the “micro” level (expressions), without referring to text. The terms “response” and “comment” used in the title are clarified as well. The last part of the paper is a pragmatic analysis of chosen units (ba and ot), focused on distinguishing the expressions possessing a commentative (additional) value, from those expressing solely the modal stance of the sender.
