The article provides chronological information about methodological guidelines elaborated by the Latvian Academy of Sciences, Institute of Language and Literature, for researchers collecting dialectisms. Auxiliary Materials for Gatherers of Dialectisms and Surveys of Dialectisms encompass expanded thematic groups of language varieties — livestock farming, agriculture, fishery, spinning, weaving, clothing, textiles, footwear, lighting, food, nature and people, peasant housing, villages, family and social life, as well as narrower topics — mushrooms, herbs, fish, birds, farming tools, etc. According to the topic, methodological guidelines also refer to collections of dialectisms already published in K. Mīlenbahs’ Dictionary of the Latvian Language and its supplements, academic publications on linguistics and ethnographic literature, as well as yet unpublished materials that are stored in the Latvian Academy of Sciences, Institute of Language and Literature; Institute of History and Ethnography, Department of Ethnography; University of Latvia, Faculty of Philology. Methodological guidelines have been developed in close collaboration between linguists and ethnographers – Saulvedis Cimermanis, Aina Alsupe, Anna Krastiņa, Linda Dumpe, Ingrīda Leinasare and others. Auxiliary Materials and Surveys have been prepared by Brigita Bušmane, Ojārs Bušs, Inese Ēdelmane, Elga Kagaine, Benita Laumane, Dzintra (Liepiņa) Paegle, Silvija Raģe, Lilija Smagare, Daina Zemzare. Auxiliary Materials and Surveys helped to promote the collection of dialectisms, which has further served as a basis for subsequent research dictionaries of dialectisms, monographs on the lexis of language varieties, and the atlas of Latvian dialects. The main project, Dictionary of Latvian Dialectisms, is still under development. A brochure has been published under the title Dictionary of Varieties in the Latvian Language in 2005; also, a thematic research on dialectal lexis is being continued on the basis of materials obtained while working with Auxiliary Materials and Surveys.
