The main aim of the article is to identify the capabilities and constraints of using CAQDAS (Computer-Assisted Qualitative Data Analysis Software) programs in qualitative data analysis. Our considerations are based on the personal experiences gained while conducting the research projects using the methodology of grounded theory (GT) and the NVivo 8 program. In presented article we focused on relations between the methodological principles of grounded theory and the technical possibilities of NVivo 8. The paper presents our opinion about the most important options available in NVivo 8 and their application in the studies based on the methodology of grounded theory.

Tekst zawiera omówienie książki Barry’ego Gibsona i Jana Hartmana Rediscovering Grounded Theory (2014) na tle dyskusji w obrębie metodologii teorii ugruntowanej. Szczególna uwaga poświęcona jest próbie rekonstrukcji „oryginalnej wersji” teorii ugruntowanej dokonanej przez autorów i związków tej metodologii z wyobraźnią socjologiczną oraz dyskusji, jakiej Gibson i Hartman poddają główne założenia konstruktywistycznej teorii ugruntowanej.

The paper provides an overview of the book Rediscovering Grounded Theory (2014) by Barry Gibson and John Hartman on the background of discussions within the grounded theory methodology. Particular attention is devoted to the reconstruction of the “original version” of grounded theory made by the authors and how this methodology is related to sociological imagination. The paper also briefly presents Gibson and Hartman’s discussion on the main assumptions of constructivist grounded theory.

Przedmiotem rozważań w artykule jest problem związku myślenia twórczego z procedurami metodologicznymi. Jest on rozpatrywany na konkretnym przykładzie postulowanego przez metodologię teorii ugruntowanej przypadku bezpośredniego generowania pojęć wprost z danych, interpretowanego jako egzemplifikacja myślenia abdukcyjnego. Omówione zostały zaproponowane przez badaczy z kręgu metodologii teorii ugruntowanej procedury wspomagające kreatywność (odkrywanie): dwoisty charakter myślenia – racjonalny i swobodny (Karen Locke), usuwanie blokad kreatywności i nastawienie „cierpliwości” (Barney G. Glaser) oraz techniki teoretycznych porównań i zadawania pytań (Anselm L. Strauss).

In the paper the problem of relationship between creative thinking and methodological procedures is discussed. It is dealt with as a specific example of a concepts generation from data (accordingly with postulates of the grounded theory methodology) interpreted as an exemplification of abductive thinking. There are some procedures aimed to enhance creativity (discovery) proposed by the grounded theorists that are discussed in the paper such as: double-thinking – rational and free-playing (Karen Locke), removal of creativity blocks and attitude of “patience” (Barney G. Glaser), and techniques of theoretical comparisons and questioning (Anselm L. Strauss).
