Civilization and technological development forced a new perspective on issues of sexualand reproductive health. (e concept of modern contraception is not only about howto counteract the conception of a child, but moreover – conscious and responsible parenthood.Despite the wide availability of birth control methods and thus e)ective familyplanning possibilities, every year 80 million women have an unwanted pregnancy. Adoptedat the Conference on Population and Development (Cairo, 1994) de'nition of reproductivehealt is based human rights and gender equality. It is de'ned as a state of completewell-being in the physical, mental and social aspect, not only the absence of disease or in-'rmities in all matters related to the reproductive system and to its functions or processes.Duty of the state contained in Act on family planning, protection of the human fetus andconditions of permissible abortion is the concern for life and health, including throughthe recognition of the right of everyone to make responsible decisions about having childrenand the right of access to information, education and counseling. (e purpose of thisarticle is to describe the methods and means of contraception available in Poland and alsoto present the results of national studies on knowledge about contraception and its use.

Rozwój cywilizacyjny oraz techniczny wymusił nowe spojrzenie na zagadnienia zdrowia reprodukcyjnego i seksualnego. Pojęcie współczesnej antykoncepcji nie oznacza jedynie sposobu przeciwdziałania poczęciu dziecka, ale także – świadome, odpowiedzialne macierzyństwo. Mimo szerokiej dostępności metod zapobiegania ciąży, a tym samym skutecznej możliwości planowania rodziny, każdego roku 80 mln kobiet zachodzi w niepożądaną ciążę. Przyjęta w 1994 roku w Kairze na Konferencji na rzecz Ludności i Rozwoju definicja zdrowia reprodukcyjnego jest oparta na prawach człowieka i równości płci. Określone jest ono jako stan pełnego dobrostanu w aspekcie fizycznym, psychicznym i społecznym, a nie wyłącznie brak choroby lub niedomagań, we wszystkich sprawachzwiązanych z układem rozrodczym oraz jego funkcjami i procesami. Obowiązkiem państwa, zawartym w Ustawie o planowaniu rodziny, ochronie płodu ludzkiego i warunkach dopuszczalności przerywania ciąży, jest troska o życie i zdrowie, między innymi poprzez uznanie prawa każdego do odpowiedzialnego decydowania o posiadaniu dzieci oraz prawa dostępu do informacji, edukacji czy poradnictwa. Celem niniejszego opracowania jest opis dostępnych w Polsce metod i środków zapobiegania ciąży, dodatkowo przedstawienie krajowych wyników badań dotyczących wiedzy o antykoncepcji oraz jej zastosowania.
