The aim of the article is to perform a comparative analysis of functions served by characters’ proper names in Jingo by Terry Pratchett and in the Polish translation of the book. The study was based on the theory of two acts; it showed which functions were served by the examined proper names, how many names served individual functions and which functions were preserved, which were changed, and which were lost. The data gained from the study will be further used to advance the research on means of translating onyms in novels so as to preserve the functions served by them in the original.

Celem artykułu była analiza porównawcza funkcji nazw własnych postaci w powieści Terry’ego Pratchetta zatytułowanej Jingo oraz w jej polskim przekładzie. Badanie przeprowadzono w oparciu o teorię dwóch aktów. Studium pokazało, jakie funkcje pełnią analizowane onimy, jaka jest ich częstotliwość oraz które z nich zostały zachowane w tłumaczeniu, które zostały zmienione, a które utracone. Pozyskane informacje zostaną wykorzystane w badaniach nad metodami tłumaczenia, umożliwiającymi zachowanie wszystkich funkcji literackich onimów.

The publication is devoted to the aspects of translating chancellery texts existing in the manuscript form and texts read off from the Early New High German period. The paper provides basic information introducing the problems of reading manuscripts from the turn of the Middle Ages and the modern era. The road to Polish translation usually consists of three stages: reading the old manuscript, translation of the text into modern German, translation into Polish. The potential omission in the stage of translation into modern German is not recommended, because then German researchers without knowledge of Early New High German would lose access to the content of the text. The presented research is based on the texts of the chancellery of the Teutonic Order and German-speaking non-religious chancelleries (e.g. texts written in the cities of Royal Prussia after the Second Peace of Toruń).

Artykuł poświęcony jest aspektom tłumaczenia tekstów kancelaryjnych w formie rękopisów i tekstów odczytanych z okresu wczesno-nowo-wysoko-niemieckiego. Celem rozważań jest pokazanie metod przekładu tych tekstów na współczesny język polski. Proponowana droga do takiego przekładu składa się z trzech etapów: odczytanie starego rękopisu, przekład tekstu na nowożytny język niemiecki, przekład na współczesny język polski. Ewentualne pominięcie etapu przekładu na współczesny język niemiecki nie jest to wskazane ze względu na fakt, iż wówczas badacze niemieccy bez znajomości języka wczesno-nowo-wysoko-niemieckiego utraciliby dostęp do treści danego tekstu. Prezentowane badania oparte są na tekstach kancelarii Zakonu Krzyżackiego i niemieckojęzycznych kancelarii będących kontynuacją tej kancelarii (np. teksty powstałe w miastach obszaru Prus Królewskich po II pokoju toruńskim).
