Współczesne muzea to instytucje powołane do gromadzenia, badania, ochrony, przechowywania oraz udostępniania zbiorów o szczególnej wartości historycznej lub artystycznej. Są również przestrzenią wyrażania i aktywizowania porządków symbolicznych, funkcjonujących w danej kulturze. Dzieła prezentowane na wystawach, ich układ i sposób ekspozycji stanowią de facto metaforyczną narrację o danej kulturze. Dzisiejsze muzea bez względu na swój profil stały się podstawą rozwoju turystyki muzealnej, która jest specjalistyczną formą turystyki kulturowej i ma charakter elitarny. Obejmuje tylko te przedsięwzięcia o charakterze turystycznym, dla których głównym celem i motywem podjęcia podróży jest wizyta w jednej lub kilku placówkach muzealnych. W aspekcie tych teoretycznych ustaleń podjęto w artykule próbę omówienia przejawów japońskiej kultury symbolicznej widzianych z perspektywy doświadczania muzealnej rzeczywistości miasta Nara. W badaniach przyjęto rolę obserwatora w warunkach naturalnych.

Modern museums are institutions established to collect, study, protect, storage as well as share collections of particular historical or artistic value. They are also a space of expression and activation of symbolic agendas operating in a given culture. Works presented at the exhibition, their arrangement and method of exposure are de facto a metaphorical narrative of the culture. Regardless of their profile today’s museums are the basis of so-called museum tourism development which is a specialized form of cultural tourism and has an elite nature. It covers only that touristic projects whose main aim, and motive to take up the trip, is to visit one or more museums. In the view of these theoretical findings in the article an attempt is undertaken to discuss the manifestations of Japanese symbolic culture seen from the perspective of experiencing the reality of the museum of the Japanese city of Nara. The study assumed the role of observer in natural conditions. It does not aspire to the status of a complete analysis. Its purpose is to call for further, in-depth research in this area.
