The primary source base for research on urban literacy in Kujawy are documents and letters, addressed to the town councils of big cities of Prussia that were drawn up in the offices of several cities (Włocławek, Inowrocław, Radziejów, Brześć Kujawski, Bydgoszcz, Gniewkowo). They are currently stored in the archives in Toruń and Gdańsk. Moreover, there are court books, city council records and bench court registers (Radziejów, Brześć Kujawski, Kowal, Przedecz) in different condition. Another group of sources are the statutes of the guilds in Bydgoszcz. In their view Kujawy appears as an area of high legal culture and rich urban literacy, which - in comparison with other regions of the Polish Kingdom - developed relatively early. This was because of trade contacts between the townspeople of Kujawy and the State of Teutonic Knights and the need to use of the same work and communications tools, as they and merchants of Hansa had. Municipal offices, employing professional, well-educated writers, were not the only centers of urban culture. Late Medieval Kujawy had also a well developed network of parochial schools under guardianship of the councilors, still only a few bourgeois sons went the University of Krakow. It seems that in their case, more important role in education played educational and cultural institutions in Prussia, cathedral schools (Włocławek) and collegiate schools (Kruszwica).
The article shows actions which accompanied the social division in towns e.g. Kraków, Nowy Sącz, Krosno and Wojnicz. It is based on the posthumous inventories containing registers of movables. The inventories are reections of property status of townspeople, which is shown in the table. Statistical data in the table have been arranged according to the division of the inhabitants into groups – the richest, moderately wealthy and poor. The people’s gender has also been taken into consideration. The sources of information have been commented and completed in the text dealing with dierent aspects of material culture as an inherent part of townspeople everyday life.
The article deals with the question of mobility in the context of the common rights of passage, carriage and cattle drive through properties belonging to estates. Till 1848 Galician peasants and townsmen enjoyed them on the basis of charters or custom law. In the second half of the 19th century rights were abolished or regulated. Archival research proved that in the whole century there were many conflicts regarding common rights, which is the main hypothesis put forward in the present article. The arrangement of the present text is conventionally structured, i.e. historical background, hypothesis and research questions; discussion of the source base, methodology and research tools; the main body, summary and general conclusions. The article originated on the basis of archival sources, mainly from the Central State Historical Archive of Ukraine in Lviv, which were utilised for the very first time. The sources were supplemented by cartographic materials prepared by means of QGIS software.
Research on immigrant groups in the urban commune of the 14th- century Krakow indicates that an important role was played by newcomers from towns loicated by the upper Odra and its tributary. The role consisted not only in their large numbers – several dozen of families can be identified – but primarily in their strong participation in the power elite. One can observe a weak influx of burghers from the Duchy of Opole. During the first quarter of the 14th century, there was only one newcomer from each of the towns: Opole, Olesno and Krapkowice. Information that we have is insufficient to examine their financial standing and family relationships. We can also confidently affirm that none of the abovementioned newcomers participated in the city council or was a lay judge. We have no information about their attitude towards the rebellion of Mayor Albert. In the second half of the first quarter of the 14th century, we can identify 10 families in Krakow who accentuated that they came from Opole and Olesno. A small influx is also visible in the light of the book of enrolments to civic law in the 1390s. A newcomer who made the most significant career was Ticzo Opuler who became aKrakow city counselor in 1379.
The article is an edition of specifications of tenements in Lublin (the city inside walls and Krakowskie Przedmieście) complied by the city office in 1738 for tax reasons. The materials presented encompass: the specification of tenements on 3 November 1738, as well as a revitalization of the Old Town on 29 April 1738 and 18 August 1738, and the revitalization of Krakowskie Przedmieście on 20 August 1738. All censuses are kept in a book number 295, which can be found in the State Archive of Lublin. The material presented is the entire list of tenements and other city properties built in Poland in the Saxon period and preserved until today. It is an interesting source of knowledge, crucial for getting to know the Old Polish Lublin, the topography of the city, as well as its social specification. Registries list the owners of particular real estates as well as their residents, show the localization of tenement houses belonging to the clergy (both diocesan and monastic), magnates, nobility, and middle class (patriciate and common people), and the localization of other buildings such as: schools, hospitals, inns, taverns, and business places. This source could be also used in onomastic studies, whether of an anthroponymic or toponymic character, as well as in genealogical studies. The material could be also useful for socio-topographical reconstructions. They are a repository of names and nicknames of the Lublin members of the middle class or real estate owners, the names of streets and squares. Among the owners and residents of tenements one could find very important names (members of the magnates holding the post of a dignitary or senator), representatives of the middle nobility, some influential people in Lublin working in the civil councils, as well as craftsmen, traders, and peddlers. It is also a source of information about the ethnic minorities living in the Lublin of that time, e.g. of a Jewish, German, Armenian, Italian, or French origin

This article is devoted to analysing and interpretating various images of postmodern philistine. Author focuses on two different types of townspeople. First presents careerists who live in big cities; they dream about fullfilling their American Dream, sometimes forgetting about moral rules which are important in postmodern reality. They not only cheat, but also betray their fiancées. Careerists easily lose their money, spending on parties, alcohol and other different addictions. They are interested in taking part in modern reality contrary to bigots, who criticise contemporary world. Bigots do not understand modern society; they associate different patterns of life with evil that destroy not only country, but also the whole patriarchal world. These two images of postmodern philistine are similar to those which appeared in the end of the 19th century.
In posthumous inventories, which constitute a kind of material summary of life, one can find various kinds of movables, arranged according to specific categories. Among them there were also devotional items, which, however, constitute a part of the legacy that escapes easy classification. Some of them may have been used as elements of interior decoration (paintings, sculptures, crucifixes). On the other hand, religious symbols in the form of crosses, Agnus Deis or rosaries, indicated certain spiritual needs of their wearers and at the same time testified to their wealth. Despite the fact that the number of posthumous inventories containing devotional items was not particularly impressive, even in such a modest juxtaposition we can see which artefacts enjoyed greater popularity during the analysed centuries. Most frequently mentioned were crosses and rosaries, and in the 17th century, additionally, Agnus Deis.

Najczęściej wymieniano bowiem krzyżyki i różańce, a w XVII wieku dodatkowo agnuski.
Tekst ukazuje formy współdziałania szlachty i mieszczan Kowna oraz kowieńskiego wydziału miast w dobie Sejmu Czteroletniego podczas wprowadzania w życie Ustawy o miastach. The article focuses on the forms of cooperation between the nobility and the burghers of the Kowno (Kaunas) urban district during the implementation of the Law on Towns adopted by the Four-Year Sejm.

Why do the citizens of Europe build walls? What is so solid in a wall to endow it with the power of division? The Berlin Wall is just one example of the enactment of political power. This paper is an attempt to catalog the most prominent walls, including The Long Walls (450-404 B.C.) from Athens to Piraeus, the Walls of Servious (378 B. C.), the Wall of Hadrian (121 A.D.), the Walls of Antonius (282 A.D), The Wall of Constantine (324 A.D.), the Wall of Theodosius II (408 A.D.), the Wall of the Warsaw ghetto (1941), and the Berlin Wall (1961-1989). Together they make up a broad horizon of barriers, differences, ethnicity and economic embargo, they comment on a historical condition such as the Cold War, and finally they prefigure a new world order. The aim of the paper is to outline some of the quantitative and qualitative characteristics of the walls. I will then explore them as forms of division based largely on religion and economy. Lastly, I will give special attention to the Berlin Wall.

Dlaczego mieszczanie budują mury? Czy dlatego, by trwale utrzymać władzę wynikającą z podziału? Mur Berliński to jeden z przykładów ustanowienia władzy politycznej. Artykuł jest próbą skatalogowania najbardziej znanych murów Europy. Są to Długie Mury (450-404 p.n.e.) z Aten do Pireusu, Mury Serviusza (378 p.n.e.), Wał Hadriana (121 p.n.e.), Wały Antoniusza, Mur Getta Warszawskiego (1941), Mur Berliński (1961–1989). Wszystkie one dają nam wgląd w możliwość tworzenia barier, różnic, etnicznego i ekonomicznego embargo, zimnej wojny i w końcu nowego porządku świata. W artykule prezentuję tabelę zawierającą informa-cje na temat europejskich murów. Omawiam różnice etniczne, religijne i ekonomiczne, powodujące tworzenie podziałów w postaci muru.
Positioning of the Tribunal Crown in Lublin for the nobility from Lesser Poland province had a number of consequences for the city and its inhabitants. One of the most important aspects related to this role was the need to provide accommodation for judges settling disputes in a noble supreme court. The term of office of the Tribunal Crown, lasting for several months each year, required the creation of conditions enabling a comfortable stay in the city. The Stanislaw August’s period brought a number of changes in this matter, mainly due to the introduction of payment for renting accommodation to deputies, which made this deal an opportunity to obtain financial benefits for people who own real estate in Lublin. In this text, I analyze legal provisions regulating issues related to the renting of rooms for deputies, shares in the market of representatives of burghers, nobility and clergy. I pay attention to their location in the city space, equipment, condition of the infrastructure and other factors determining the attractiveness of the offered apartments.

W niniejszym tekście dokonuję analizy przepisów prawnych regulujących kwestie związane z wynajmowaniem pomieszczeń dla deputatów, udziałów w badanym rynku przedstawicieli mieszczan, szlachty i duchowieństwa.
The name Stanislaus (or its diminutive form) appears in Cracow burghers’ families in which names that sounded German, Polish or Ruthenian were recorded. We come across the name Stanislaus in the families of mayors of villages, aldermen, scribes, merchants, butchers, blacksmiths, maltsters and shoemakers. It can be inferred that the appearance of this name was widespread and encompassed all groups of burghers, which may be regarded as indirect proof of the popularity of the worship of St. Stanislaus.

The article analyses the family ties of the Cracow burghers with the secular clergy of the city in the fourteenth century, documented in sources. It has been demonstrated that the clergy who came from the Cracow burghers (cathedral canons, vicars, collegiate canons, parsons and priests, altarists and clerics) were a group consisted of 58 people. On their way to Church positions, they encountered various difficulties determined by the personal policy of the bishops of Cracow, the right of patronage, and the policy of noble and mighty families. There are also data on the education of the clergy of Cracow origin and their informal connections with the Church presented.

the beginning of sulphur ore mining in Swoszowice, having lasted for almost 500 years, goes back to the 15th century when the need for sulphur increased along with the firearm production development. In the Middle Ages alchemists called sulphur the ‘element of flammability’. After the invention of fi rearm sulphur gained big importance. It became an ingredient gunpowder. The real impulse for sulphur mining development in Swoszowice, a village near Krakow, was the publication of two documents: Village Land Act in Swoszowice and Diploma, that permitted mining in Swoszowice and gave a privilege to miners guild (co-partnership extracting sulphur ore) that enabled them to carry out extraction of sulphur in the whole country. It was given in 1415 by the Polish king,Władysław II Jagiełło. In the beginning, the miners guild consisted of well-known Cracow burghers: Michał Fayger, Piotr Słodownik, Mikołaj Sołtys from Stradom and a mineworker Krystian. Then it became a part of goods of Corpus Christi Monastery in Kazimierz and after the partitions of Poland it was a state-owned entity until 1887. Sulphur mining in Swoszowice made Jagiellonian dynasty powerful and influential. It lasted almost continually till 1886. At that time the pit in Swoszowice was the biggest in Europe. In the 18th century 250 workers worked there and 2,5 tones of sulphur were mined each year. In the late 19th century (1871–1876) the mine in Swoszowice covered 80–90 % of sulphur demand in Austro-Hungarian Monarchy. There were many reasons for the fall of the sulphur mine in Swoszowice such as: predatory economy, decrease in sulphur ore and increase of production costs, caused for example by the rise of wood prices (wood was needed to make protection systems of the shafts), groundwater floods in the shafts. Miners were also exposed to harmful impact of hydrogen sulfi de. Additionally, the mine business in Swoszowice was negatively infl uenced by ongoing competition, the renewal of sulphur production in Sicilia, cheaper sulphur production from pirytes in Hungary, markdown of tariffs on sulphur carriage as a consequence of the Trade Act between Austria and Italy lowering the duty on imported sulphur from Sicilia. The last attempts to restart the mine in Swoszowice were made during the World War I, in 1917. For that reason the Polish Sulphur Factory consortium was created. It conducted mining works in the area of bathing facilities. Two shafts were deepened: Elżbieta and Piotr. Sulphur ore, with 22–25% sulphur content, was discovered on a depth of 18 meters in the first one. The mining works were stopped though.
