The subject of the essay is Franz Kafka’s attitude to World War I presented in the personal writings (Dzienniki) and literary works (story Kolonia karna, Sprawozdanie dla Akademii, Schron and miniature Stara karta). The writer creates a double narrative of World War I: ascetic and devoid of emotion in Dzienniki and metaphorical and parabolic in the stories, presenting one of the most original literary response to the dramatic events of 1914–18.
The article is a review of Here We Are, the latest novel by contemporary English novelist Graham Swift, published in the spring of 2020. The text is considered in the context of the author’s earlier work, which the often self-reflexive narrative references at a number of points. The author’s use of understatement and the motif of parenthood also receive the reviewer’s attention.
This article seeks to answer a fundamental question: What has made silence a scarce commodity, even though it is among the more important human needs? The impact of silence on human development over the course of a lifetime, and in relationships with others, is shown. The affirmative aspects of silence from an anthropological perspective, as a natural human need that contributes to the development of full humanity, is underlined. With this aim, the article clarifies the differences between silence in the sense of quiet hush, and in the sense of keeping quiet; and between solitude and loneliness. The paper concentrates on the positive influence of silence on personality development and purposely omits the negative aspects of silence, since they do not serve the integral development of the person – this issue needs a separate discussion.

Nabiera on szczególnego znaczenia w obliczu współczesnych antychrześcijańskich i antykatolickich wyzwań i trendów.

The problem of silence is one of the most important issues on the basis of spiritual theology as well as Christian formation. It acquires a special meaning in the face of contemporary anti-Christian and anti-Catholic challenges and trends. The process of successive secularization, which is the result of postmodernity, makes silence become unclear and incomprehensible. In this way, they are reduced to a purely naturalistic level. The practice of silence has its deep biblical foundation in both the Old and the New Testament. The words and attitudes of Jesus Christ, whose the Christian imitates, they are a reliable determinant of working on themselves in this regard. Also, the practice of the Church over many centuries is proof of the validity of this tool of sanctifying. Silence is reflected in theological analyses that are based on supernatural and anthropological principles. It should be said that silence occurs in correlation with silence and loneliness leading to the integration of man and, above all, is an effective tool for striving for union with God.
Wagę wiersza o bieli podkreśla dwojaki zapis – wersja drukowana (czarne litery) i negatyw rękopisu (białe litery). Motyw bieli – w twórczości Różewicza stale obecny, będący znakiem wielofunkcyjnym, odsyła autorkę do wiersza Biel, w którym poeta opłakiwał baranka. Wobec bankructwa słów zużytych, biel jako znak ciszy i milczenia prowadzi poetę do „wyjścia” – poza rzeczywistość otaczającego świata, w strefę ciszy i milczenia.
The aim of this paper is to show that silence in a conversation can be an indirect speech act in Searle’s sense of the concept. The manifold semiotic functions of silence that will be presented in the paper suggest that it is an independent segment in a series of utterances, and thus constitutes a speech act separate from the preceding and following verbal acts. Its interpretation depends on conventions, but these conventions rarely evoke only symbolic procedures in contrast to direct speech acts. In most cases, pauses in speech also initiate a symptomatic interpretation procedure as defined by Rudi Keller, leading to indirect conclusions about the communicative intentions of the speakers.

This article is an attempt of showing the presence of the word – the living word – as a linguistic/speech means in human being’s relation with the Other – with somebody closer than somebody else, who testifies with his/her presence to the presence of the person speaking to him/her. The presence of the word can be perceived as “non-relative” presence – in line with thinking about language/speech through the prism of their conventionally understood functions. Accepting after H.-G. Gadamer that our experience is linguistic in nature, I write about immersion in language in which, by assimilating its meanings, we can think and communicate our thoughts to others and communicate with them – we are able to talk. The presence of words as the foundation, opportunity and quality of relations with the Other is also relative in its nature. I present, following the ideas of E. Lévinas, the pre-linguistic way of being with the Other and I discuss silence as seemingly non-verbal contact with oneself and the Other. Since I focus on the relation with the Other, I also develop the theme of who is talking to whom, pointing out, at the same time, that talking to somebody fits in the “existential project” of the speaker. The considerations concentrated on the above problems became also a pretext to reflect on the selected aspects of verbal and non-verbal relation between an adult and a young child. The reflections undertaken in the article are mostly placed within the phenomenological perspective.

In this article the author analyzes the image of God who keeps silence. This image only rarely appear in the Bible, where God is usually presented as the One, who speaks; as the One who acts through his powerful word. In the first part the author shortly discusses semantic of silence in the Hebrew Bible. Then he presents an attempt of classification of reasons of God’s silence in the Bible and in the related Ancient Near Eastern Texts according to the model developed by M. C. A. Korpel and J. C. D. Moor in their influential book The Silent God. Finally, he focuses on some texts that according to the model presented by Korpel and Moor should classified as incomprehensible; the texts in which this silence could be considered a challenge, an invitation or even a form of a communication between God and human being.
The paper considers the issue of truth, pointing out that the truth as it is commonly understood is a reference of the personal truth of some elements of the public sphere, that is the public truth. Due to the crisis of European culture (pluralism, individualism, inflation of speech and expression, scientism) public truth cannot function as it used to, because it is not able to impose on society a single formula. This raises the impression that no truth is possible. The article argues that there is still a personal truth available, the development of which may be the goal of future culture. Patterns of this development are brought by the liberal Quakerism. It makes the public truth something formal – it believes above all in what Pink Dandelion called the “behavioral creed” - without forcing individuals to believe in any particular truth.
This is a memoir of Professor Kazimierz Bartoszyński. The theme of this essay is silence – literary silence, which is the result of convention, anecdotal silence, which prompts scholarly meetings and friendships, and metaphysical silence, which is connected with death.
The aim of presented paper is an explanation of historical-systematic problem of „non-decision” by P. Bachrach&M.S. Baratz as silence sanctioned in linear (democratic) political practice. There are examples of this pattern in modern times as „taboo”, „political corectness” and „state secret”, in times of Plato there is the concept of „aporrheta” (secret), who developed the theory of it as elements of synchronic (totalitarian) discourse.

The article analyzes moments of silence in the free verse poem which are marked by the non-standard use of the dash (inconsistent with the rules of punctuation and grammar). The aim of the article is to show that the dash, and other punctuation marks, used in this way are equivalent to words, and function in a poetic text on the same rights as the word. Indeed, semantically and axiologically, they often constitute the supraverbal layer of the text. In the process, theories of free verse which in their assumptions do not recognize semantic punctuation as structurally equivalent to words are reexamined.

The author discusses the problem of silence in communication. Different types of being silent are taken into consideration. It is pointed out that silence treated as a way of communication is a complex issue and many linguists trying to determine the nature of silence and its role in communication tend to describe the phenomenon in very vague, general statements, sometimes even limiting themselves to nothing but comments on sayings or famous quotations. The author tries to indicate which of those remarks are justified from a linguistic point of view. Moreover, the semantic and pragmatic features of the Polish lexemes MILCZENIE (silence), MILCZEĆ (to be silent) and some other notions that are relatively frequently coupled and sometimes, in fact, confused with the above mentioned lexemes, are examined.
The publications of the late Bishop Adam Lepa (1939–2022) deal with the topic of the galenosphere as an environment of silence and its role in life and in the process of human education. A special and specific form of the galenosphere are those environments of silence that concern the sacrum. In this context, it is possible to speak of the importance of silence obligatory during the celebration of liturgy. The aim of the study is to show the nature and role of the galenosphere characteristic of the liturgy. Starting from an explanation of the concept of the galenosphere, the author of the study then goes on to show the close relationship that develops between silence and mystery on the basis of the analysis of the writings of Odo Casel (1886–1948), a Benedictine monk from the Abbey of Maria Lach in the Rhineland, founder of the mystery theory in sacramentology and an outstanding theologian of the liturgy. In Odo Casel’s optics, silence is a ritual form of personal participation in Christ’s action, which is realised on the sacramental plane, and not merely an expression of subjective piety. The aim of liturgical silence is therefore to pursue the mystery communion with the Logos. The next section of the paper, based on an analysis of the General Introduction to the Roman Missal, presents the location of moments of silence in the structure of the Eucharistic celebration, their theological and liturgical justification and their normative character. The final section of the article is devoted to the typology of liturgical silence. It discusses its following types: reflective, internalizing, meditative and adorative silence. It concludes by pointing out pastoral aspects related to the great importance of silence in the process of implementing the conciliar principle of participatio actuosa. Liturgical silence cannot be identified with “an inner haven in which to hide oneself in some sort of intimate isolation”, but is “a symbol of the presence and action of the Holy Spirit” (Pope Francis, Apostolic Letter Desiderio desideravi, no. 52). In this perspective of the pneumatological significance of moments of silence in liturgical celebrations, the demand to educate clergy and lay faithful to perform the symbolic gesture of silence with great care is particularly relevant from the point of view of liturgical formation.

In this paper, the author attempts to provide a comprehensive description of the complex phenomenon of silence and sheds light on its significance within the context of music therapy. By considering various definitions of silence, as well as ways of approaching the phenomenon of silence, in both the domain of interpersonal communication and the abundant realm of sound, the author aims to highlight the multifaceted nature of the matter. The author discusses the distinction between the silence and the muteness, draws attention to an interdisciplinary character of the field, enumerates diverse angles of considering the issue, and examines the role of silence within a larger perspective of fields of psychotherapy and music therapy. In the presented cases of music therapy work, silence is a kind of a therapist’s tool. Owing to an insufficient amount of research papers on silence in music therapy, it is impossible to produce pioneering findings in the very field. In this paper the author ventures to summarise latest data, points out the urgency of delving deeper into the issue, and discloses novel prospects for music therapy to be discovered in pursuit of investigation of the ambiguous notion of silence.
