Medieval Silesian written sources mention several times a castle under the name of Landeshut, located within the present-day town of Kamienna Góra. It bears the same name in documents from the 13th century and later. In fact, the stronghold was located not within the walls of the medieval town, but on Zamkowa Góra [Castle Mountain] adjacent to it from the east. It was not until 2018 that the first archaeological study was undertaken there, which yielded up results indicating that the first fortifications on the hill can be traced back to the Early Middle Ages. The excavations have also provided a new insight into the mutual relations between the town of Landeshut and the Landeshut Castle in the Late Middle Ages, mainly in the late 13th and 1st half of the 14th century.

This article examines Sasanian military architecture with respect to its integration with the four-region Spāhbed system (Ādurbādagān-Spāhbed, Xwarāsān-Spāhbed, Xwarbārān-Spāhbed and Nēmrōz-Spāhbed) for defending the empire. Following an overview of Sasanian military architecture within Iran, the article examines the Darband wall of the Caucasus in the context of the office of the Ādurbādagān-Spāhbed facing the empire’s north and northwest (Ādurbādagān, Media Atropatene corresponding with the historical Azerbaijan in Iran’s northwest), the Tammisha and Gorgan wall systems of the Xwarāsān-Spāhbed facing the nomadic warrior peoples of the Central Asia, the military architecture of the Xwarbārān-Spāhbed facing the western (Romano-Byzantine) frontiers, and the Khandaq-e Shapur of the Nēmrōz-Spāhbed facing the southwest, notably raiders from the Arabian Peninsula threatening the empire’s southwest marches.

Dokumentacje z dotychczasowych badań i studiów konserwatorskich nad średniowiecznymi obwarowaniami miasta i zamku stanowiły merytoryczną jej podstawę.

There is no possibility to talk about medieval Poland without Zaremba z Kalinowy family. Nowadays Kalinowa is a small village with gothic church and the XIX century looking palace surrounded by moat and lake from a north side. In XIV or beginning of XV century first manor house was build on the island. During our excavations in 2011 we discovered that in XV century new mansion was constructed on a mainland area. Inside there were beautiful late medieval tiled stoves, and rare artefacts (i.e. axe shaped badge) mostly known from large cities like Gdańsk or Kraków. In the XVII century Kalinowa was sold to Łubieńscy family. After that they build new palazzo in fortezza residence which was totally rebuilt in XVIII and XIX century.

This paper presents the results of nine seasons of the joint Polish-Siovak archaeological mission in Tell ei-Retaba in Wadi Tumilat, conducted since 2007. The results of the excavation have been published so far in several preliminary reports. The work of the Polish-Siovak team at the site has brought new insights into the long history of the site and corrected some outdated information, based on more or less regular initial surveys and excavations. In this article, the main features of the settlement in respective periods are described, starting with the oldest occupation phase during the Second Intermediate Period, represented by a cemetery and a settlement. The excavated archaeological material sheds more light on the problematic end of this period and informs us about life during the early New Kingdom. It has enabled us to much better reconstruct the development of the Ramesside fortresses with their elaborated fortification system, temple as well as buildings for their inhabitants. Important proofs of far-reaching international contacts with the regions of Levant as well as the Aegean have been found. Last but not least, the later life of the settlement during the Third Intermediate Period can now be partly reconstructed, showing the continuing importance of the site.
