The article sketchily surveys Zbigniew Herbert’s mythological prose texts from Król Mrówek, which remained unpublished during his lifetime. A suite of analytical and interpretive considerations intends to present Herbert as an author who took up the task of investigating the consistency of the Mediterranean myth. The article applies twentieth-century mythology studies tools to situate Herbert’s book within literary tradition. In his apocrypha Herbert subjects mythological tradition to a renarration; he shows appreciation for characters traditionally devoid of the grace to speak and reinstates their hitherto deformed human faces. Simultaneously, Herbert undermines the inevitability, necessity, and permanence of the verdicts of the fate which, in traditionally narrated mythology, stands as the final instance bringing back the cosmic order.
The book Prehistoria – średniowiecze – romantyzm. W kręgu indoeuropejskich tematów mitologicznych: od Dumézila do Słowackiego [Prehistory – Middle Ages – Romanticism. Indo-European Mythological Themes from Dumézil to Słowacki] by Dariusz Seweryn proves that the methodology suggested by the author can be applied to the Romantic literature. It reveals both the strategies that Romantic authors are fully aware of as well as those which remain unrealised, but refer to the mythological context that goes back in time to the Indo-European ‘prehistory’ (this is Higgs’ ‘God particle’). Seweryn also proves that the antic phrase Omnes viae Romam ducunt has above anything else a propaganda, Latino-centric significance. At least some roads lead from India via Iran (also) to Rome, but Romans did not realize that their customs and literature were influenced by a tradition that originated in a remote part of the world and was significantly older than ‘the City’ itself. Seweryn’s book is certainly one of the best I have studied and reviewed in the last ten years!
The name of God is the most sacred name. By the grace of the Lord, who wanted to reveal himself to Moses, the relationship of the Israelites with God has reached a unique character. The name is something special. Thanks to his acquaintance, someone previously unknown becomes closer to us and thus we enter a completely different level of knowledge. The Old Testament messages provide information about God's name, which did not always sound the same, and was not even identified with one and the same person. Many exegeses, both in Poland and abroad, have taken up the subject of the variety of God's names in the Old Testament. Among them, J. Day, M.S. Smith, M. Uglorz, W.F. Albright, whose monographs have been a valuable help in the development of this article, deserve special attention. Thanks to the findings of Ugarit, the name of God began to be looked at from another, previously unknown site. The mythologies of the countries neighbouring Canaan have had a considerable impact on the beliefs of the protoplasts of the Israeli nation, leaving behind traces that cannot be omitted during a thorough analysis of the original text. The aim of the article is to analyze the names of the God of Israel. In the beginning, there is a brief information about the discoveries in Ugarit, which seemed to be necessary in the undertaken topic. Next, an etymological analysis of the names of God was carried out, comparing them to the text of Targumu Neofiti 1 and LXX, and the development of worship of individual names of God in Biblical Israel was presented.

Imię Boga to imię najświętsze.

The article discusses the problem of myths in the current cultural circumstances, that is, in post-modernity. It indicates the crucial issue of the attitude of the postmodern man towards tradition and its transmission. The work also concerns issues related to the exploration of a new mythology and connected with the issue concept of Joseph Campbell. Suggestions for the way of thinking about reality and traditions included in the theories of Roger Fidler, Wolfgang Welsch and Paul Virilio have been disucessed as well. Furthermore, the author undertakes an attempt to answer the following questions: can the today’s story be seen as a „song” and whether in the technical world, virtualized and marked by pluralism of everything the final “murder of this song” has been committed in a symbolic sense?
I was particularly interested in answering the question concerning the relation between understanding phraseology and being a student of a small country school and a big school in Warsaw. The analysis for the research was used to obtain the answer to this question. The research was conducted in school in Tęgoborze, a small village in the south of Poland. The second part of the research was conducted in the Witold Doroszewski Secondary School No 81 in Warsaw. Maximum mean, minimum mean, standard deviation and confidence interval were used as statistical tools. The following conclusions were drawn: 1. Students attending the school in a big city are more aware of using phraseological units motivated by mythology. 2. A student’s sex is significant in understanding phraseologisms. Girls understand them better than boys. 3. Phraseological units are better understood when occur in a context. 4. Both students from rural areas and the cities have little awareness of making phraseological mistakes. Very rarely they recognize incorrect forms and correct themselves. 5. The mark received during Polish language classes does not influence the level of understanding phraseoligisms in both tested groups.
Tworzą go splecione z sobą – pamięć zbiorowa i pamięć kulturowa przeobrażające się z czasem w mitologię.

The disappearance, breakup, or perhaps the dissolution of the Habsburg monarchy into nonexistence in the last several days of the “Great War” did not mean that time and history disappeared without a trace. For it left a rich and varied heritage that consists of intertwined collective and cultural memories that transform over time into a mythology. An important place in that Central-European, Habsburg mythology is taken by the myth of Galicia. Evidence of its existence and vitality is its emergence several years ago, as unexpected as it was intensive, in the commercial realm. That was made possible by falling back onto heritage, remembrance, and myth, and not by – even an elementary – knowledge of the reality under this banner. The Kingdom of Galicia was wiped out from the territory it used to occupy by the disaster of two wars. Yet a memory of it, evidently strongly rooted, managed to survive that unfavourable time and today it is still very much alive, even though much transformed. The time that has passed, together with all the historical tremors during that time, has resulted in a kind of deconstruction from which a new, mythical form of Galicia emerged. It began to live its own peculiar life which has hardly anything in common with the original. The realm in which its presence is best visible today is what can broadly be called “commercial use”. The cultivation of the current, predominantly commercial functionality of Galicia is only rarely accompanied by a reflection on the sense or reason for the cherishing of its mythology, which is what is actually taking place. Are the material benefits – because there must be some – a sufficient justification for the glorification of the Austrian partition in contemporary Poland?

There are two modes of establishing a relationship with space. One is, partly general and partly idiosyncratic, manner in which the past makes itself manifest in the present of the life of the human individual. The other is a most profound and intimate connection with a place which is possible when we begin to feel situated in a given space, i.e. when standard historical and aesthetic lines of connecting prove inadequate.L’anima della Calabria (1950) and Segreti di Puglia (1951), two travelogues in a series of Italia celebre e sconosciuta, explore the two distinctly different regions of Italy investigating the perception of landscape, its rootedness in history and mythology as well as various practices of everyday life they have generated over centuries. Thus, the region becomes more than a series of interesting sights and historical monuments baedekers record and advertise for tourists. Instead, we deal with deconstruction of such ready-made cultural products and, in the effort of “mental exercise”, we not only transit through but are also situated in places which reveal their provisional, metamorphic character, their unfinishedness, becoming thus a challenge to our moral sense. Hence, exercising memory and mind, allenamento della memoria e della mente morphs into allenamento morale e sociale.
The article is devoted to the analysis of the poem by Adam Naruszewicz Duma do słowika that is the translation of the ode by Jean‑Baptise Rousseau, A Philomele. The poem’s narrative order is marked out by the comparison of the two texts; and all that is done to show the way Polish poet rendered the original text. In the article particular attention is paid to the differences between fragments of the French work and Polish Duma do słowika. But above all, the analysis brings out the fact that Naruszewicz’s style was quite distinct, and the relation of lyrical I to the recipient of the utterance is slightly different from that in the Rousseau’s poem, which is particularly noticeable in the ending passage of the Polish work. Important features of the Naruszewicz‑as‑a‑translator’s technique are also discussed.
In the history of culture and religion the mountains, owing to their verticality that makes them stand out in landscape, their massiveness and imperturbability, generated, from time immemorial, a lot of interest associated with their origin; they played an important role in beliefs, mythology, cult and symbolism. On their summit, sometimes also inside them, were located dwellings of supranatural creatures of varied provenance, character, activity and attitude to people. The mountains were also hierophantic, objects of pilgrimages and experiencing the sacred. In addition, they constituted a boundary between the ecumene and anecumene as well as the place where the spirit world was to be found. Sometimes the mountains were also regarded as a home of evil creatures and forces.
Artykuł ten przedstawia wyobrażania mieszkańców Mezopotamii o świecie podziemnym w wybranych mitach w języku sumeryjskim (Zejście Inany do świata podziemnego) i akadyjskim (Zejście Isztar do świata podziemnego; Nergal i Ereszkigal i Sen księcia Kummy). Obraz krainy umarłych zawarty w pismach sumeryjskich został przejęty i rozwijany w tradycji akadyjskiej.

This article presents the ideas of the inhabitants of Mesopotamia about the Netherworld in selected myths in the Sumerian language (Descent of Inana into the Netherworld) and Akkadian (Descent of Ishtar into the Netherworld; Nergal and Ereshkigal and The Dream of Prince Kumma). The image of the land of the dead contained in the Sumerian scriptures was taken over and developed in the Akkadian tradition. According to the beliefs of the inhabitants of Mesopotamia, the place where the dead went after death was located below the surface of the earth and the ancient ocean. It resembled an ancient Sumerian city, which reflected the urban mentality of Mesopotamia. People after death lead a passive existence often compared to sleep. The same social structures as on earth were present in the land of the dead. Kings, notables, priests kept their position and their condition was slightly better than that of ordinary dead. The fate of man after death could be improved by a dignified burial and regular sacrifices. Death was an eternal condition, the only contact with the dawn of the living ensured the practice of necromancy and the fact of haunting loved ones in the event of neglect of victims. The underworld was inhabited by a huge pantheon of deities and hybrid beings, headed by a dark couple, the goddess Ereshkigal and the god Nergal. The gods of heaven and earth did not have power over this part of the cosmos, and they were also bound by the strict laws of the land of the dead.

Evgeny Yablokov MIKHAIL BULGAKOV AND SLAVIC MYTHOLOGY Summary The article examines the mythological subtext of Bulgakov's works. The author assumes that motifes of Slavic mythology (both in pagan and Christian versions) occupy an important place in this subtext. The functioning of the "snake-and- chicken"'s discourse in Bulgakov’s novel "Fatal Eggs", stories ("Towel with a Rooster", "The Steel Windpipe "), plays ("Zoyka's Apartment", "Flight ") is considered. The analysis of mythological allusions clarify the interpretation of the writer's works and let specify the structure of his artistic world.

Zwroty zawierające dèsen ‘prawy’, prav ‘prawy’, ‘sprawiedliwy, słuszny’, a szczególnie ljav ‘lewy’, kriv ‘krzywy’ z dzisiejszego punktu widzenia pozbawione są motywacji. Celem artykułu jest objaśnienie mitologicznych podstaw współczesnych użyć tych słów. Autorka rozpatruje trzy typy wyrażeń: (1) zawierające element lewy paralelnie do użyć krzywy; (2) wyrażenia, w których element ljav (lewy) odnosi się do strony mającej pierwszeństwo w praktykach magicznych i implikuje wieź z „drugim światem”; (3) wyrażenia z kriv (krzywy) o przypuszczalnym znaczeniu ljav (lewy), m.in.: krìvija vjàtyr ‘rodzaj zachodniego wiatru’ i krìva dùpka (krzywa dziurka) ‘tchawica’ – w przeciwstawieniu do przełyku.

The opposition right – left is, since ancient times, expressed through art as well as mythology and ritual systems that occupy an important place in the worldview of all the nations. In the Bulgarian language and in other South Slavic languages there is an opposition desen – ljav (*desnъ – *lěvъ), whereas in other regions the opposition *prāvъ – *krivъ. Expressions which contain the words dèsen ‘prawy’ [right], prav ‘prawy’, ‘sprawiedliwy, słuszny’ [right, righteous, correct], and especially ljav ‘lewy’ [left], kriv ‘krzywy’[crooked/ skew] from the present day point of view seem to lack any motivation. The aim of this article is to delineate the mythical basis of current day use of these words. The author considers three types of expressions: (1) the ones containing the element lewy [left] parallel to the uses of krzywy [crooked/ curved]; (2) the ones in which the element ljav (lewy) [left] refers to the party that has priority in magical practices and implies the connection with the ‘other world’; (3) the ones containing kriv (krzywy) [crooked] with a presumed meaning of ljav (lewy) [left], e.g. krìvija vjàtyr ‘a kind of West wind’ and krìva dùpka [crooked hole] ‘tchawica’ [trachea] – as opposed to ‘przełyk’ [oesophagus].

Polish funeral chrematonyms with mythological elements are being examined here. The quantitative and qualitative survey of the subject matter, based on several criteria (among them, a genetic and cultural criterion – the origin of a mythology reference; onomastic – its type; lexical and semantic – its connotative values; functional – the function of a mythological component in a name), shows that chrematonym senders/creators most often turn to Greek vocabulary – less frequently Roman or Egyptian – to teonyms (names of deities), to mythological words which connote funeral topics and identify the range of services the company offers. In addition, now and again they choose to modify the form that a mythological component assumes (Archon instead of Charon) or to use a term which hardly connotes funeral topics (Olimp, Arkadia) or does not clarify the business profile at all (Achilles, Herkules)
“The Book of Traveling Elegies” by Jan Rybiński is not just a description of the author's journey especially to foreign universities, in order to gain extensive humanistic knowledge, but, and this is probably the most interesting, is also a kind of „visiting card” for the Renaissance intellectual member of the respublica litterarum community. The article presents the methods that Rybiński used to present his person in a subtle and clear way to a new, but also demanding environment of intellectuals gathered in Toruń. The article presents both the pragmatic aspect of this self- -presentation, related to the work undertaken by the poet, as well as the purely artistic one, addressed directly to local Toruń humanists.
The main purpose of the paper is discovering whether Leviathan in the Hebrew Bible is a real animal or a mythic marine monster. A definitive answer is in fact possible, thanks to analysis of certain biblical fragments where the crucial term is present. The paper is divided into two main parts: First, Leviathan is examined as encountered within extra-biblical literature. In the second part, this creature is analyzed in the context of concrete biblical fragments which include a presentation of Leviathan. On the basis of research, it can be claimed that, in the Hebrew Bible, Leviathan is to be understood as a mythic marine monster. Conversely, there is no known fragment in which Leviathan has to be understood as a real animal.

In this article an attempt is made to analyze and interpret the first book of the epos Crisias, by Hilarion of Verona. The purpose of the article is to identify and illuminate the ancient literary, historical and mythological sources used by that author to fashion an eschatological imagination. According to the thesis presented in this article, contextual references in Crisias constituted a path of communication between the writer, Hilarion of Verona, and the reader, Bessarion. Hilarion of Verona is an otherwise unknown writer of the Italian quattrocento, therefore a presentation of the intellectual environment within which that author operated is a necessary part of our analysis. The reflection offered in this paper can be treated as a prolegomena to further research, since the epos Crisias has never before been the focus of research within Polish scholarship.

W artykule podjęto próbę filologicznej analizy i interpretacji I księgi eposu Crisias Hilariona z Werony.
Main vault of Rome was located in the Temple of Saturn. Stored in it were the material goods of the Roman people, as well as the text of laws and their projects, the senatus consulta and military insignia. The use of the temples for purposes other than the worship had a practical dimension. Choosing the Temple of Saturn as the place of aerarium could have also symbolic meaning, associated with the role attributed to this deity in mythology.

The article is devoted to the functioning of the Arthurian legends in the works by both J.R.R. Tolkien and A. Sapkowski. The universe of Andrzej Sapkowski, who inscribed his own story into the Arthurian myth, makes an impression of being rooted in a long, centuries-old tradition. Tolkien also drew from the legend of King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table, using the eternal desire for the coming of the king – restorer. The most interesting issue is the different approach to the legend presented by both writers. Tolkien omitted elements "contaminated" with Christian influence, extracting the pure essence of pagan Celticism, while renouncing an inspiration from the medieval history. Sapkowski, on the contrary, openly admits to his fascination, apotheising the Arthurian myth in both its forms – the primitive one and the one filtered through the Christian tradition.

Artykuł poświęcony jest funkcjonowaniu legend arturiańskich w twórczości J.R.R. Tolkiena i A. Sapkowskiego. Uniwersum "Wiedźmina", wpisane w mit arturiański, sprawia wrażenie zakorzenionego w długiej, wielowiekowej tradycji. Tolkien czerpał z legendy o królu Arturze i rycerzach Okrągłego Stołu, wykorzystując przede wszystkim wpisane w kulturę europejską odwieczne pragnienie nadejścia króla - odnowiciela.
The process of mythologization of avifauna has been analyzed in order to study the relation between man and nature, and more precisely, between the Renaissance humanism and natural sciences. One issue is puzzling in this field – why did educated and well-read humanists mythologize nature, including the avifauna? Why did authors, for whom in principle criticism was an elementary indicator for perceiving reality, got rid of it so easily? 16th century authors with humanist education did not reconstruct nature but art, and they searched for its ideal in ancient works filled with mythologization of the nature. Humanist erudition required describing mythical animals and equally mythical symbolic of those animals. In this way one could prove that he knew ancient texts well. Reconstruction of such nature as it really existed was an attitude that was unworthy of a humanist artist. Hence the store of knowledge and ignorance that existed in those times was translated into a particular, often mythologized, text written by a Renaissance author.
