Particles are uninflected parts of speech and have the form of free morphemes with the function of modifying the meaning of a word or an utterance. The author focuses on the issue of modal particles in interrogative sentences from the Polish-German perspective and illustrates it on selected examples in an interlingual relation. German language has an extensive system of modal particles and it is not always possible to fully render the meaning of German sentences into Polish, which results, among others, from different, specific functioning of the category of modality in the two languages.

The aim of this paper is to present modal particles in German, with special emphasis on their semantic features. The paper depicts the problem of meaning of modal particles in different grammars and outlines the attitude of the author to the question, whether German modal particles have some particular meaning or not. The author comes to the conclusion that German modal particles have a specific type of meaning, namely a pragmatic (illocutionary) one.

It is a common opinion that Czech modal particles evolved under the influence of the German language. Moreover, investigations of Czech modal particles are heavily Germanbased in the sense that they are intended to identify Czech equivalents of German particles. This article is an attempt to look at the Czech system of modal particles not primarily from the German perspective, but on the basis of a general theory of modal particles. This approach leads to the identification of three Czech particles, the modal functions of which have not yet been noticed. It turns out that they have no clear German equivalents. Therefore, it is likely that they did not evolve under German influence.

The aim of this paper is to investigate how second language speakers of Norwegian (henceforth Norwegian L2 speakers) differ in their use of modality expressions from native speakers (L1 speakers). As modality is a very broad subject, the main focus of the study is limited to one-word modal adverbs, such as kanskje ‘maybe’, and modal particles such as jo. The study compares the frequency of using different types of modal adverbials by L1 and L2 speakers, and their syntactic position. The implications of the study are two-fold. First of all, it is to contribute to the studies of the field of modality in Norwegian. The second implication is didactic, as describing the use of modal adverbials in Norwegian conversation can help devise right teaching materials to allow second language users achieve a more native-like competence in this respect.

Abtönungspartikeln weisen im Gegensatz zu anderen Funktionswörtern wie Artikel, Präpositionen und Konjunktionen mehrere Besonderheiten auf, womit verschiedene Schwierigkeiten verbunden sind. Im Folgenden werden Abtönungspartikeln in Bezug auf die Terminologie und unterschiedliche Definitionen beschrieben. Im zweiten Teil werden die Relevanz der Abtönungspartikeln besprochen, sowie ihre Funktionen gezeigt. Abtönungspartikeln kommen vor allem in der gesprochenen Sprache vor und werden immer wichtiger. Nach der Analyse können wir feststellen, dass diese Arten von Wörtern in grammatischen und linguistischen Lehrbüchern einen eher marginalen Stellenwert haben. Daher ist es unbedingt erforderlich, eine gemeinsame Terminologie für Abtönungspartikeln zu erarbeiten, obwohl dies möglicherweise keine leichte Aufgabe ist.

Modal particles have several special features and related difficulties, unlike other function words, such as articles, prepositions and conjunctions. In what follows, modal particles are described in respect of terminology, and the different definitions. In the second part, the modal particles are characterized their importance and functions are shown. Modal particles are becoming more common and more important, especially in the spoken language. After a study of the issue, we can ascertain that these types of words have a rather marginal status in grammar and linguistics. Therefore, it is absolutely necessary to find a common terminology for modal particles, although this is may not prove be an easy task.
