W zamiarze autora niniejszy artykuł stanowi przyczynek w toczącej się debacie dotyczącej miejsca i roli religii w życiu społecznym i politycznym. Artykuł składa się z dwóch części. W pierwszej autor prezentuje główne modele relacji między państwem i religią (supremacji religii nad państwem, supremacji państwa nad religią, separacji państwa i religii, współpracy między nimi) oraz omawia warunki dobrej koegzystencji (wierność własnym celom, ograniczenia władzy państwowej i religijnej, troska o człowieka). W drugiej części autor wskazuje trzy istotne funkcje religii (formację ludzkich sumień, kształtowanie moralności obywateli, konstytuowanie sfery publicznej).

The article discusses the place and role of religion in social and political life. The first part presents different models of coexistence between religion and state, with one domineering the other, or both going their separate ways, and conditions under which each of the players stays true to its principles, acknowledges its limitations and genuinely cares for the common good. The second part underlines three essential functions of religion: formation of conscience, betterment of the morals and creation of the public life.
