This communication tries to shape and to ground the idea that Rural Studies and Rural Sociology have a particularly promising job to do in re-assembling the Social, the Natural and the Technical within the treadmill of sustainable development. It is argued that the cross-fertilization of the ecological modernization movement and Social Studies of Science and Technology (particularly Actor- Network-Theory) is giving the opportunity to establish a perspective that might enlighten and accompany the processes of making agricultural sciences and technology more ecological. But this requires specific conditions and ways of doing social studies in situations that include those processes.

China’s economic transformation process, which started in 1978 under the banner of the Four Modernizations, is the deepest transformation in the long history of this country. The Communist Party of China carries out modernization in some areas, while limiting changes in others. Economic development has been undoubtedly impressive, but also unbalanced. It created problems such as inequality and social contrasts between urban and rural areas, as well as between coast and interior provinces, the division of the society into different categories of citizens, and corruption. There is also the question about the relationship between economic development and democratization. The article is an introduction to explain these phenomena.

The article presents the influence of Confucianism on formation of the state ideology in China in the 20th century. Confucianism in China was considered both as a religion and philosophy, and fundamentally focusing on the state and society. The emphasis was put on hierarchy and the morality in the family and the whole society. Confrontation with patterns and political ideas of the West during the late of 19th and early 20th centuries made a great impact to further develop of Confucianism in China. Nowadays Confucianism again was put in the center of the new state order. The Communist Party of China instrumentally treats the Confucian ideas to consolidate its power and build social peace. At the same time it promotes Confucianism and Chinese culture as an alternative to the Western values.

The purpose of the article is to present the multifaceted issue that is missile defense in the context of Polish safety. The fact that Poland is a member of NATO, but also its geographical location and the nature of potential security risks, mean that its position in terms of missile defense is not equivalent to that of other countries. In the case of Poland, we are dealing with plans to create a broadly understood air defense system; a compromise solution, the result of irreconcilable requirements, in which missile defense will be just one of many tasks rather than a priority.

Author claims that an idea of labour market deregulation is based on assumptions easily found in every version of evolutionary theory – be it modernization or neomodernization theory, convergence theory, contemporary dependence theory or modern concepts of globalization – an, as such, essentially rejected. Empirical evidence concerning changes in institutional forms of labour are rather understood as an outcome of market invasion into spheres outside economy, i.e. into culture and structure of social relations. Side effects of these processes is increasing uncertainty, that makes rational decision making impossible. Further, author refers to the set of empirical studies showing that “marketization” of culture leads to passive forms of coping with reality and individual withdrawal from the variety of social interactions. Above all, such passive orientations are different from and idea of self made man, active entrepreneur and the like, that are considered as cultural basis of market economy.

Márquez was greatly influenced by his grandmother’s story-telling ability, and was highly indebted to the socio-political history of Latin America, particularly Colombia. In One Hundred Years of Solitude, he wants to reconstruct the lost world of childhood by using magical realism which gives expression to the world-view of a rural people who live in isolation from modern world. By retelling the official history from the perspective of the oppressed, he reveals the fact that history is never factual and impartial but serves the interest of those who write it. Through the banana company massacre and the subsequent hide and seek over the number of dead workers, Márquez exposes the way official history becomes fabricated and distorted by authorities, and fails to provide the original occurrences. He was disgusted with the political violence and civil wars which had distraught people; he was also against capitalism, scientific and technological inventions, and so-called modernization, which are the means through which foreign culture brings corruption and brutality, dominates, exploits and oppresses the natives, and threatens the native culture and identity. By employing magical realism, he was able to recreate Colombian history to protest against the way capitalism dominated the socio-political and economic structure of the region.

The new social history of the Czech lands in the 19th century is written on the basis of the concept of history as games, where however an analysis is not lacking of the structural framing of society, rhythm of historical movement, relationship between the continuity and discontinuity of modernisation changes, relationship between historical stability and dynamics and where Czech lands are presented as a unique “laboratory” of these modernisation changes. The author overcame the classical concept of modernisation by drawing into this general concept the value frameworks (especially the values associated with the Enlightenment, liberalism and nationalism), as well as new trends of that time (gender, social issues or the emancipation of the labouring class), which modernization inevitably or inadvertently created, and then especially his imagination.

Polish science quite rarely identifies the postwar period as well as the time of the Polish People’s Republic with modernity or modernization. More often the questions on succumbing and enslavement appear, in particular in recent years we can notice the discourses which compare the period of the Polish People’s Republic to the times of the German occupation, thus the state socialism to the Nazism. Although it may seem that currently it is even more difficult to perceive the times of the Polish People’s Republic as the time of modernization, this is the approach I would like to propose.

The significance of this study is in the interpretation proposed by the authors of the definition of ‘sustainable development potential of an old industrial region’. The authors have identified and systematised the main components of the sustainable development potential of an old industrial region according to the main classification attributes such as finance, ecology, food security, sociocultural state, infrastructure, marketing of the region, and industrial production potential. The article has a theoretical character and is based on system-structural methods, comparative analysis, graphic method and logical generalization synthesis, induction and deduction, and dialectical and SWOT analysis. The features of the sustainable development of an old industrial region are the concentration of cities around large industrial agglomerations, environmental pollution, and the use of Industry 3.0 and Industry 2.0 obsolete technologies in industrial production. It has been proven that the complex problem of modernization in old industrial regions of Ukraine by transitioning to Industry 4.0 technologies requires necessary decisions to be taken at the level of state and local authorities, as well as the level of industrial owners.

The paper deals with the contemporary Chinese capitalism. The author discusses key features of Chinese political economy in the context of profound transformation it currently undergoes. The author claims that the change is a dynamic process of adaptation of the Chinese state to external environment combined with a struggle of state institutions to retain political power and social legitimacy. The paper presents a proposal for the modernization of a district road No. 1592D relation Polwica-Wierzbno. The aim of the modernization is to improve communication accessibility, increase traffic safety, ride comfort, and to adapt the surface to the current requirements. The technical condition of the road is insufficient, the surface is damaged, roadsides unsuitable and do not have adequate drainage. The degree of damage depends on many different factors. Over the last few years we have been observing significant growth of both transport and construction works. The main factor, influencing the condition of road pavements is high traffic, which results from agriculture development, and the same time more intensive participation of agricultural vehicles in slow-speed traffic, development of heavy good vehicles’ traffic, development of local population and growth of passenger vehicles.

The Islamic Republic of Iran is known in the world as a country of oppression and discrimination against women. Ironically, Iranian women are very active in public life and fulfil important social roles. Not only do women represent a majority of Iranian university students but many are respected academic teachers, lawyers and journalists. Educated Iranian women once backed the Islamic Revolution. However, the system that ensued restricted their freedom by introducing anachronistic regulations based on literal understanding of Islamic law (the Sharia) but, on the other hand, it opened up personal growth opportunities for women from poorer and more traditional social strata. Many of today’s Iranian feminists are the beneficiaries of the post-revolutionary education system. The Islamic Republic has given them an opportunity to get education but fails to provide them with rights that would match their qualifications: women are discriminated against at courts and married women are made dependent on their husbands who are often less educated than their wives. The Iranian regime views the quest for gender equality as a way to oppose the current political system. The proponents of equality are persecuted and imprisoned in very much the same way as dissidents who demand political liberalisation and abolishment of censorship. Simultaneously, the idea of equal rights has been incorporated into political programmes of all opponents of the current Iranian government

Occupational structure of the Polish lands at the turn of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries (Summary)The authors present a new picture of the occupational structure of the Polish lands at the turn of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. The article is based on the population censuses, carried out in Russia in 1897 and in Austria in 1900, as well as on the German economic census, conducted in 1895. In order to obtain reliable results, the authors have corrected errors found in the censuses in question. With the removal of the errors, they have been able to reconstruct the employment structures from which we can derive a more precise picture of the economic situation of the Polish lands at the turn of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. The examination of the problem in question has made it possible for the authors to verify the long held view that the technological revolution in Polish lands took place at the turn of the 70s and 80s of the nineteenth century. The corrected census data show that the level of industrialization of the Polish lands in about 1900 was still very limited.
