Streszczenie: Wielka Brytania, a w szczególności Anglia posiada rozbudowany system nadmorskich kurortów, których skala i złożoność jest niespotykana nigdzie indziej na świecie. Brytyjskie kurorty odegrały kluczową rolę w rozwoju turystyki jako wielkiego międzynarodowego przemysłu oraz w społecznych i kulturowych przemianach na całym świecie. Popularność wakacji na wybrzeżu wzrastała jako swoisty fenomen, aż do lat 70-tych i 80-tych XX w., kiedy ekonomiczna recesja oraz konkurencja tanich wakacji zagranicznych wywarły silny wpływ na dalsze losy i przyszłość kurortów. Wiele brytyjskich kurortów odczuło spadek liczby odwiedzających, upadek obiektów oraz wzrost bezrobocia. Artykuł podejmuje problematykę historii brytyjskich kurortów, na którą wpływ miały społeczne i kulturowe przeobrażenia, a które aktualnie wymagają przekształceń dla zaadoptowania do nowej sytuacji ekonomicznej, turystycznej oraz kulturowych preferencji.

Abstract: Great Britain and England in particular, have expanded system of costal resorts whose scale and complexity is unmatched anywhere else in the world. They had played a central role in the development of tourism as a great international industry and in social and cultural transformation across the globe for more than two centuries. The popularity of holidays at the coast grew over the years as phenomenon until 1970s and 1980s when a combination of economic recession and competition from cheap foreign holidays put great stress on the resorts future and survival. Many British resorts visitors numbers fall, facilities decay and unemployment increase. The article explores history of British coastal resorts which were facing great social and cultural challenges and need to be restructured to adopt to new situation in economy, tourism and cultural preferences.
