The Holy Virgin’s Conception Berdychiv Friary of Barefoot Carmelites was situated within the Kyiv, later Lucko-Zhytomyr diocese, the Holy Spirit Polish Province of the Barefoot Carmelites. The monastery was founded by Kyiv voievoda Janusz Tyszkiewicz in 1630, as a votive offering for rescuing from the Tatar bondage. The Berdychiv Friary was the centre of religious ideology and culture, and its activities were aimed at the dissemination of Roman Catholicism in ethnic Ukrainian territories. It was abolished by Russian authorities in 1866, and books were transferred to the Library of S. Volodymyr University in Kyiv. In 1927-1928 Berdychiv’s book collection was transferred to the V.I. Vernadski National Library of Ukraine from the Library of S. Volodymyr University in Kyiv. Nowadays the Berdychiv Friary Library is the largest book collection of the Roman-Catholic monasteries’ libraries in Ukraine. The manuscript catalogue of this Library titled „Index librorum Bibliothecae Carmelitarum Discalc[eatorum] Conventus Berdicoviensis” and dated 1781 is an important source for historical and book studies. It’s preserved in the Institution of Manuscript of V. Vernadski National Library of Ukraine. The catalogue consists of 3467 bibliographical descriptions of 7264 volumes and divided into 20 subject sections. Correlation of statistical and subject data on Polish printings from this library was offered as a result of book analysis of the catalogue content. The book production of the printing-houses from 22 cities on the territory of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth and from nine cities of Western Europe are represented in manuscript catalogue.

Legacies from the donors of the monastery, testamentary depositions and gifts were the main form of supply of books to the library of Szczyrzyc, both in the early days of the monastery as well as over several hundred years of its existence and operation. It was a quite common phenomenon for the vast majority of monastic libraries in the past centuries. In the light of the preserved archival material, and above all the books from the library of Szczyrzyc, it can be concluded that it was one of the most important sources of enlargement of the monastic library. This statement applies to the entire period of the functioning of this library, but especially to the beginning of its formation when the collections mainly included manuscripts and liturgical codes. On the basis of the information about provenance, it is possible to identify three groups of donors to the library of Szczyrzyc: monks (abbots and priors) from Szczyrzyc, secular clergy, representatives of other religious orders and lay people. Among the donated books are primarily theological and liturgical works as well as the collections of sermons necessary for the effective pastoral care of the parish.

The monastery-hermitage of the Discalced Carmelites in Czerna, created in the seventeenth century, collected books related to the history and spirituality of the Carmelites, and the legislation of that Order from its inception. That was due to the fact that the Carmelites, especially in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, had a significant impact on the development of Marian, patristic and ascetic spirituality. Eminent people from the circle of Carmelite feathers left behind works that today inspire the development of spiritual and mystical theology. Carmelite literature focused primarily on four thematic groups: the theology of the inner life, the controversial theology, Mariology and broadly defined preaching. Concern for the last one was clearly visible in the pastoral activities of the Discalced Carmelites from the beginning of their presence in Poland. Numerous treaties, studies, Spanish translations of mystics’ writings and sermons preserved in the library of Czerna are the sign of theological and preacher’s activity of the Carmelites. Preserved to the present day in the library of the former monastery-hermitage of Czerna, they show the signs of use over the past centuries. They served the monks, above all in the pursuit of their religious vocation, and thus deepening their spiritual lives.
