The article is an attempt to evaluate (formally and substantively) chapters devoted to pre-war Poland in local monographs. Due to the opinion-forming significance of these books, their contents considerably impact the shaping of our knowledge aboutthe past of the local communities. They are the basis for educationin the spirit of local patriotism. The image of pre-war Poland in these books is generally richly documented in sourcesand presented in an attractive form. The authors are for the most partenthusiasts of regional research: history teachers, professors. Most of the descriptions concerning the years 1918-1939 were created by research teams. In their work they drew motivation, among others, from the inspiration of public sponsors and professional reviewers. Despite the high assessment of the reliability of the analyzed chapters, there is much to be complemented and improved in these stories (e.g. everyday life of rural residents, the situation of national minorities). There are still unexplored sources of military provenance (deposited in the archives of the general staff) and materials of local compatriots from Israel and Germany. The jubilee celebration of the 100th anniversary of Poland’s independence is a great opportunity to properly assess and appreciate the specificity of the title issue.

The subject of the review text are two monographic publications devoted to Edvard Grieg: Bernard Piotrowski's Edvard Grieg. Życie – Fascynacje – Dramaty [Edvard Grieg. Life - Fascinations - Dramas] and Agnieszka Dybowska-Błoch's Edvard Grieg. Życie i twórczość 1843–1907 [Edvard Grieg. Life and work 1843–1907]. These are the only Grieg's publications of this type in Polish. They were written not by musicologists, but by Scandinavian philologists. Due to the popularity of the music of the Norwegian artist in Poland, and thus the wide range of these publications, I considered it necessary to evaluate them in a multi-faceted way. The simultaneous discussion of two items concerning the same artist allows for a comparison of different ways of presenting the artist's figure and output. The value of these books for a wide audience as well as for people particularly interested in music and musicologists is considered.

Przedmiotem tekstu recenzyjnego są dwie publikacje monograficzne poświęcone Edvardowi Griegowi: Bernarda Piotrowskiego Edvard Grieg. Życie – Fascynacje – Dramaty oraz Agnieszki Dybowskiej-Błoch Edvard Grieg. Życie i twórczość 1843–1907.

The Museum of Krakow, until recently the Historical Museum of the City of Krakow, ranks among the largest Polish museums, not only within the group of municipal museums. It boasts an exceptionally developed infrastructure and a high number of thematic branches, as well as multifaceted operations. The analysed monograph, authored by the Museum’s current Director, presents a long and tedious, albeit systematic process of the Museum’s development over the period of more than a hundred years within the context of numerous external conditionings, with the emphasis on the Museum’s role and importance for the city community and for its culture. Underlining the obvious advantages of the book and its sizeable factual value, as well as balanced opinions, the reviewer, however, observes its certain defaults and deficiencies, while also formulating a number of more general views going beyond the very matter of the book-related review. The extensive publication in question certainly encourages such an approach, this unquestionably adding another to its merits.

The historic paper mill in Duszniki-Zdrój (Lower Silesia Voivodeship) was granted Poland’s Historic Monument status in 2011, which confirms the complex’s historic and artistic worth. Currently, attempts are made to make it enter the prestigious UNESCO World Heritage List, actually together with the Czech Velke Losiny paper mill and the German one in Homburg. It should also be borne in mind that in 2018 Poland’s only Museum of Papermaking located on its premises celebrated 50 years of its existence. The Museum’s employees, headed by Maciej Szymczyk PhD, have recently been extremely successful as far as organization, investments, displays, and publications are concerned. As for the latter, preparations for an extensive Monograph on the Paper Mill in Duszniki-Zdrój have to be pointed to; the book is an academic attempt at presenting the facility’s complex history, beginning from the 16th century, as well the individuals related to it; furthermore, efforts to preserve the precious facility and its adaptation to serve museum purposes are described. The presented publication can be viewed as a successful crowning of the todate research, providing solid grounds for the documentation to support the UNESCO List entry application. The strongly factual and richly illustrated monograph should be analyzed on various levels, one of them speaking of the effect of the coherent and consistent activities of museologists.

The article, comprising four sections, presents Oskar Kolberg, a Polish ethnographer and folklorist, and his work. The first section is devoted to the ethnographer’s early work and to the results of his lifelong research, namely a twenty-three-volume monograph entitled Lud, jego zwyczaje, sposób życia, mowa, podania, przysłowia, obrzędy, gusła, zabawy, pieśni muzyka i tańce (Folk: Their Customs, Way of Life, Language, Legends, Proverbs, Rituals, Spells, Games, Songs, Music and Dances) and a nine-volume series entitled Obrazy etnograficzne (Ethnographic Pictures). The second section presents the methodology that Kolberg used to collect his data, including his own research, materials received from other researchers and data gathered as the result of contests organised by various scientific societies around the country. The third section describes the methods used by Kolberg to organise the materials. Kolberg aimed to create an overall ethnographic description of Poland with a division into the so-called provinces. Additionally, Kolberg differentiated and described ethnographic groups, including their ethnonyms, which are still recognised and used today. The fourth section presents the scope of his monographs, which have become the standard for this type of ethnographic work. The article also reflects upon the challenges that Kolberg’s work presents for the contemporary reader.

Monographs of local rural communities played an important role in Polish sociology until the 1970s. They had been preceded by numerous sociographic descriptions and social surveys made already in the first half of the 19th century.Numerous critical remarks made about classical (descriptive, encyclopedic) monographs, which stressed that such accounts lacked a representative character and provided no material for formulating general conclusions, that they represented a synchronic and not a diachronic approach and contained redundant details, were justified. However, the best monographs in Polish sociology met all the strict methodological requirements and their most important value was a reliable description of social reality, which has been neglected since the moment of the popularization of research conducted with the help of questionnaires that concentrate mainly on the analysis of the respondents’ awareness. Traditional monographs seem to represent an interesting approach to scientific investigations, even from the point of view of present dilemmas in social sciences (the postulated restraint on the part of the author, incoherence of culture, the researcher’s ethos, science’s non-involvement in temporary matters). Therefore, it is worth examining this inconsiderately abandoned genre of sociological literature.

The discussed monograph allows us to look once again, but from a different, new perspective, both at the person of the Polish Pope and at the contemporary perception of his life and multifaceted activity. The value of this view is determined by the heterogeneous nature of the collected materials and the fact that representatives of various scientific institutions and disciplines collaborated in their creation. Therefore, it should be expected that this initiative will be continued by issuing new interdisciplinary publications bringing future generations closer to the figure of the man who changed the face of the world.

The text is a critical attempt discussing the compendium Literatura polska wobec Zagłady, (“Polish Literature in the Face of the Holocaust”) edited and published by three prominent scholarly experts on the subject: Sławomir Buryła, Dorota Krawczyńska and Jacek Leociak. This is the first of the three volumes of the series Reprezentacje Zagłady w kulturze polskiej (“Representations of the Holocaust in Polish Culture”) – an endeavour which is imposing already in its first instalment concerning the years 1939-1968. The time frame of the abovementioned volume is marked by the date of the beginning of World War II (1939), resulting in the Holocaust of the Jews of Europe, and a “dry pogrom”, that is was the anti-Semitic campaign in Poland in 1968 (the campaign itself and its writings shall be examined in the following volume). A comprehensive and very carefully prepared monograph has been divided into two fundamental parts: concerning the literature reacting to the Holocaust conducted by Nazi Germany during the war (1939-1945) and discussing the literary echoes of that genocide in the years 1945-1968. The study and invaluable interpretational effort have been focused on personal document literature (Marta Janczewska, Jacek Leociak), the prose (Sławomir Buryła, Dorota Krawczyńska), the poetry (Piotr Matywiecki) and the press (Ewa Koźmińska-Frejlak). A separate chapter has been devoted to a the “global text”, i.e., Archiwum Ringelbluma (“Ringelblum’s Archives”). Highly appreciating the entire volume as well as its individual fragments, recalling fundamental considerations and the ones concerning details, finally, proposing small corrections and pointing to minor shortcomings, the author of the critical review suggests the use of the formula “Polish literature of the Holocaust” (analogous to the formula coined by Grzegorz Niziołek “Polish theatre of the Holocaust”) as the one principally necessary to be contrasted with the formula “Polish literature of war and occupation”.

Three Augustinian monasteries in Warsaw, Ciechanów and Rawa were established a hundred years after the foundation of the Order (1256), thanks to endowment of Siemowit III, the Prince of Mazovia. Mazovia had been an independent duchy until it was incorporated in the State of Poland in 1526. The three monasteries mentioned above belonged to three different dioceses located: in Plock (the Ciechanów monastery), Poznan (the Warsaw monastery) and Gniezno (the Rawa monastery). In the post-partitionment period the church and State organization of the region was changed. A peripheric location of Mazovia enabled the monks to get in touch with pagans, whom they converted to Catholicism. They also strengthened their beliefs as it was determined in the charter of foundation. The Augustinians ministered to their parishes, ran schools for the local communities and universities for the monks (Warsaw). They distinguished themselves by their attentiveness to gaining knowledge and education. In the post-partitionmenst period the Augustinians were engaged in cultivating the Polish language and national habits. They were the defenders of Catholicism until the annulment of the monasteries in 1864.
