Since about three years ago, if you use Google as a search engine to find the meaning of a French word, an unilingual dictionary often appears as the first entry, with no reference or URL. Comparative textual investigations show that Google dictionary entries are related to a set of Le Robert dictionaries which have their origins in Le Robert illustré, first published in 2009, and available since then in a variety of electronic formats: Dixel mobile (2014) and Le Robert mobile(2019) for iPhones, and the “Dictionary of definitions” of the spell checker Le Robert correcteur (2014, 2018, 2019). The comparison between Google entries and the same entries in Le Robert correcteur’s “Dictionary of definitions” allows us to progress in the genealogical study of Google’s entries. It shows which simplifications of the text of the entries and which changes of their structure can be observed between Google’s dictionary and its text source.

The vocabulary of the cinema (hereinafter referred to as Cinematic terminology) representsone of the most important components of 20th and 21th century accessions to the Russian and Polish language. This research is aimed to identify and compare the meaning of words used incinematic terminology. In this research, the researcher applies descriptive qualitative method. The results shows eighteen types of movie making terms. Another conclusion is that most of the cinematic terms are borrowed from English, and that the borrowed terms are the same in both languages. With the present work, we hope to make a contribution to the comparative studies of the cinematic terminology by improving the record for some movie words what are included in the most populares Russian and Polish monolingual dictionaries.

On the basis of sample analysis of a Czech adjective, a definition based on the data drawn from the Czech National Corpus (cf. Čermák and Schmiedtová 2003) is gradually compiled and finally offered, pointing at the drawbacks of definitions found in traditional dictionaries. Steps undertaken here are then generalized and used, in an ordered sequence (similar to a work-flow ordering), as topics, briefly discussed in the second part to which lexicographers of monolingual dictionaries should pay attention. These are supplemented by additional remarks and caveats useful in the compilation of a dictionary. Thus, a brief survey of some of the major steps of dictionary compilation is presented here, supplemented by the original Czech data, analyzed in their raw, though semiotically classified form

Selecting the correct sense in a polysemous entry may cause difficulty for language learners. Poor dictionary reference skills of users may account for the problems that students encounter in dictionary consultation. In addition, some dictionary users may have a tendency to consult the first sense of an entry and not the remaining senses [Tono 1984], although the information required for understanding the meaning of a word might be situated in the middle or end of an entry. For these reasons, lexicographers have started introducing sense navigation devices in dictionaries: menus and signposts. The main role of these devices is to assist dictionary users in entry consultation by helping them find the right meaning of a word as quickly as possible. The present paper is a review of nine empirical studies [Tono 1992, 1997, 2011; Bogaards 1998; Lew 2010; Lew et al. 2013; Lew and Pajkowska 2007; Lew and Tokarek 2010; Nesi and Tan 2011] focusing on the effectiveness of sense navigation devices in dictionaries. In general, the studies investigate how menus and signposts in dictionary entries affect sense selection accuracy and entry consultation time. Furthermore, observations are made regarding the effect of entry length and proficiency level of users on sense selection accuracy and entry consultation time in the context of menus and signposts. Also, menu and signpost systems are compared.

Celem artykułu jest próba odpowiedzi na pytanie, w jakim stopniu dotychczasowe ustalenia dotyczące sposobu korzystania ze słowników przez osoby uczące się języków obcych (przede wszystkim języka angielskiego) są prawdziwe w odniesieniu do studentów Katedry Hungarystyki Uniwersytetu Warszawskiego, uczących się trzech mniej popularnych języków: fińskiego, węgierskiego oraz estońskiego. W artykule zaprezentowano wyniki badania ankietowego, które skupiało się wokół następujących zagadnień: 1) jak często studenci korzystają ze słowników, 2) jak często korzystają ze słowników poszczególnych typów, 3) jak oceniają słowniki, z których korzystają.

The paper attempts to answer the question to what extent the existing findings on the dictionary use (concerning mainly learners of English) are true for the students of the Department of Hungarian Language at the University of Warsaw, who learn three less commonly taught languages: Finnish, Hungarian and Estonian. The paper presents the results of a survey which focused on the following issues: 1) how often the students use dictionaries, 2) how frequently they use dictionaries of different types, 3) how they rate the dictionaries they use.

The paper examines the acquaintance with chosen on-line dictionary types among students of German studies. It is essential to answer the questions: Do the students use digital dictionaries in case of communi-cative difficulties in a foreign language? In which circumstances? Which ones do they prefer and why, especially whether they choose paper or electronic dictionaries and which devices they use to access the lexicographic information? Which features of dictionaries and what aspects of lexicographic structures are important for users? And finally whether the metalexicographic knowledge taught in linguistics courses improves the lexicographic competence of students. The results of the study confirm that on-line dictionaries, especially the bilingual pons.eu and the monolingual duden.de are popular and preferred by students. Quick and easy searching as well as wide range of entries and satisfying information per lemma are important criteria when using a dictionary. The typical context of dictionary use is translation and preparing for oral or written activities, therefore the users look mostly for the meaning and equivalences of lexemes, synonyms, and usage labels. While the respondents without any metalexicographic education believe that they are competent dictionary users, the students who have attended different courses with lexicographic focus revise their opinions. They appreciate the role of such courses in improving their lexicographic skills, especially if both the theory and practice of dictionary usage have been taught.
