The objective of the study was to establish the impact of illustration on the reading and interpreting of a poem in the case when only one illustration is provided with the text. The research study involved 408 students of the Faculty of Education and Faculty of Arts. The students were divided into two groups, of which one was given the poem Učenjak (Scholar) written by Niko Grafenauer and illustrated by Lidija Osterc, while the other had the same poem illustrated by Marjan Manček. Both groups had to answer a number of questions regarding personal traits of the literary character, his appearance and the environment he lives in. The results showed that the illustrations had a significant impact on the interpretation of the physical features of the literary character and the environment he is set in. This in turn affected the understanding of the message of the poem.

Public space more and more often makes use of multimodal texts, combining in them both linguistic and graphic-picture elements. The present article constitutes an attempt at a linguistic analysis of multimodal texts described on the example of city logos. The economization of perception as well as the willingness to present a given city in a way that is attractive for the recipient cause that this kind of text that a logo is, evolves continually. Simultaneously, logo still remains a whole which is coherent in functional and semantic terms and that, in turn, entitles it to be treated in terms of a semiotically arranged visual plane.

The article is devoted to the analysis of the pragmatics and semiotics in the productive comic genre of digital communication – the political meme. The empirical material consists of actual internet heterogeneous texts, created after the publication of Alexei Navalny’s film “Palace for Putin”. The comic content is viewed as a way of defusing the public tension of the sanctioned protest, an instrument for interpreting and discussing current social reality, as well as a method of demonizing a political subject “them”. The research assumes multimodality of the media environment and its products. It considers verbal, iconic and metagraphic ways of realizing the pragmatic intentions of the participants in the communication process. The author examines the initial situation (proto situation) that caused a communicative reaction of the internet users in the form of memes, analyzes the essence of a political meme as a heterogeneous text. The article describes the structural organization of memes, the syntactic and semantic relations of the verbal and iconic parts, as well as the use of intertextuality to concisely and expressively transmit new meanings.

Popular-science magazines occupy an important place amidst numerous areas of journalistic activity. Their aim is to convey scientific knowledge that is easily digestible and attractive in its form also when it comes to non-specialists. Authors of such texts face a difficult task of reconciling what is typically scientific with what is journalistic. The purpose of the article is a media-linguistic analysis of phenomena which constitute the journalistic transfer of scientific knowledge, taking place both in the verbal as well as visual sphere. The research corpus is based on the texts published in the Polish edition of the popular science magazine FOCUS. In the centre of research interest there are processes of hybridization and differentiation which are employed by authors of multimodal texts in order to optimize the transfer of information.

The article examines the emotive influence of visual elements on the reception of German and Danish grave inscriptions. The material basis of analysis are photos of tombstones from the 19th and 20th century from cemeteries in Saxony and Copenhagen. The methodological basis is the theory of multimodal text and the starting point of the analysis is the typology of image-text relationships, which is supplemented by further observations. The study analyzes representatives of different semantic classes of visual components from different time periods. Among the most expressive and impressive sculptural representations are those with references to eschatology and the person of the deceased. In their use, two distinct strategies can be noted: the strengthening of mourning mood and the repression of the picture of death.

Der vorliegende Beitrag konzentriert sich auf die Frage, wie das Phänomen Terrorismus in Form schrecklicher Bilder vermittelt wird und welche Motive und Aspekte thematisiert werden. Das Korpus besteht aus multimodalen Kommunikationen, die mittels einer Internetsuche mit Hilfe der Suchmaschine Google ermittelt wurden. Unter multimodaler Kommunikation versteht man Kombinationen aus geschriebenen Texten und zweidimensionalen statischen Bildern, die zusammen mit anderen relevanten (Sub)Modalitäten wie Typografie und Farbe den Empfang bestimmen. In der Analyse wird folgenden Fragen nachgegangen: Was wird gezeigt? Wie wird es gezeigt? Welche Funktionen haben Text und Bild sowie die multimodale Kommunikation insgesamt?

The present paper focuses on the question of how the phenomenon of terrorism is conveyed in the form of terrifying images and which motives and aspects are thematised. The corpus is composed of multimodal communications, which were determined by means of an internet search with the help of the search engine Google. Multimodal communications are understood to be combinations of written texts and twodimensional static images that, together with other relevant (sub)modalities such as typography and colour, determine the reception. The analysis will explore the following questions: What will be shown? How is it shown? What functions do the text and image as well as the multimodal communication as a whole have? Ostatnio spotkałem się ze stwierdzeniem, że „adaptacja jest serią procesów zachodzących w trakcie przekładu” (Post). Adaptacja obejmuje swoim zasięgiem nie tylko coraz szersze kręgi kina czy sztuki, ale również naszego życia, a samo pojęcie adaptacji ulega ciągłemu rozszerzaniu. Celem głównym artykułu jest pokazanie, że adaptacja filmowa jest przykładem wzoru przekładu multimodalnego. Na skutek tego otrzymujemy zupełnie nowy tekst, jakim jest film w kontraście do jego literackiego pierwowzoru. Aby pokazać, że adaptacja filmowa jest przykładem wzoru przekładu multimodalnego, ujmę ją od strony językoznawczej, co dla niektórych wyda się zapewne czymś nowym. Słowa modalność czy tekst multimodalny będą przewijały się w artykule często. Przy okazji artykułu zaprezentuję też drobną część badań prowadzonych nad filmem od strony językoznawczej w Wyższej Szkole Filologicznej we Wrocławiu.

Recently, I came across the statement that „adaptation is a procedure for the translation of the film” (Post). Adaptation reaches not only the increasing circles of the cinema or art, but also our lives, and the very concept of adaptation undergoes constant expansion. The main goal of this article is to show that film adaptation is an example of a multimodal translation pattern. As a result, we receive a completely new text, which is a film, in contrast to its literary prototype. To show that a film adaptation is an example of a multimodal translation pattern I will discuss it from a linguistic point of view. The article will often refer to modality or multimodal text. I will also present a small part of the research conducted on the film from a linguistic point of view at the Philology University (Wyższa Szkoła Filologiczna) in Wrocław.
