Spontaneous creativity: An overview of theories crucial to musical idea generation

The aim of this article is to present selected concepts related to idea generation in musical com-position. Different approaches towards creativity are discussed in order to delineate how they describe spontaneous creativity. The typological view of composers and theories of the creative process are discussed. Further advances in studies of creative cognition are scrutinized: research on unconscious and conscious processes in creation, followed by the development of the concept of innovative Involuntary Musical Imagery (InMI) in composers. Current research on internal auditory phenomena suggests that composers’ InMI can be potentially innovative and serve composers as a source of ready ideas to be used in their compositions. The current overview is informed by cognitive sciences and creative process studies, especially compositional studies.

The article contains theoretical and research considerations on musical creativity. It focuses on artistic activities in the areas of creative and reproductive creativity and perception, referring to selected systemic solutions in music education. It is emphasized that both teachers and pupils, active participants in the artistic and educational process, play an important and creative role in the course of music education. The authors show different research approaches and emphasize the urgent need to conduct research showing the true picture of the implementation of creative music education.

Artykuł zawiera rozważania teoretyczno-badawcze na temat kreatywności muzycznej. Wskazano na działania artystyczne w zakresie ekspresji twórczej, odtwórczej i percepcji na podstawie wybranych rozwiązań systemowych kształcenia muzycznego. Podkreślono znaczącą i kreatywną rolę zarówno nauczyciela, jak i ucznia, będących uczestnikami procesu edukacyjno-artystycznego. Autorzy ukazują różne podejścia badawcze i podkreślają pilną potrzebę prowadzenia badań, aby ukazać rzeczywisty obraz realizacji kreatywnej edukacji muzycznej.

Проблема музикотворення в світлі наслідування постмодерністських мистецьких ідей харак-теризується спрямованістю композиторської уваги до вираження суб’єктивованих смислів, ідей, що актуалізує можливості інтенціонального світу митця, оригінальність художнього мислення, здатність до конкретизації та поглиблення образно-смислової сфери твору. Персоніфікація мистецьких смислів в рамках суб’єктивної реальності є пов’язаною з процесами об’єктивації художньо-естетичних парадигм, сформованих в рамках культури; визначаючи внутрішній зміст культури контекстуально, творча особистість здатна осягнути глибинну, концентровану сутність культурної епохи, або культурну форму. Людина-творець, що усвідомлює або відчуває внутрішній імпульс культури, контекстуально мислить, створюючи нові сюжети, образи, які переростають межі суб’єктивного змісту автора, об’єктивуючись у смислах інтерпретуючих концепцій.

The problem of creating music in the light of postmodern artistic imitation of ideas is characterised by the compositional focus of attention to the expression of subjective meanings and ideas that actualizes the possibility of an intentional world of the artist, originality of creative thinking, the ability to specify and deepen semantic sphere-shaped piece. The personification of artistic meanings within subjective reality is related to the processes of objectification of artistic and aesthetic paradigms prevailing within the culture; defining the inner meaning of culture contextually, a creative person is able to understand the deep, concentrated essence of the cultural epoch or cultural form. A creator-man, who feels or is conscious of an internal impulse of culture, thinks contextually, creating new stories, images that outgrow the limits of the author’s subjective content, finding expression in interpreting the meanings of concepts.

Kultura od dawna podlegała silnym wpływom Zachodu. Jest to wciąż widoczne w różnych dziedzinach sztuki, a w szczególności w muzyce popularnej. Przemiany westernizacyjne, rozwój technologiczny oraz wpływ globalnych korporacji i wytwórni muzycznych prowadzą do szerokiego spektrum przemian twórczości w obrębie niemal każdej ze społecznych funkcji muzyki. Artykuł wskazuje na zmiany jej estetyki, komunikacji, ekspresji, użytkowości, integracji i społecznych więzi, a także na wpływ polityki i ekonomii. Skupia się na przedstawieniu wielu zjawisk, które spowodowały m.in. uproszczenie i utowarowienie muzyki, zobojętnienie i zmęczenie nią, a także osłabienie społecznych więzi i izolację.

Western World have had a strong influence on culture. This is still visible in different artistic fields, especially in popular music. Westernization, technological development and impact of global corporations and music labels, leads to changes in almost every social function of music. This article presents changes in aesthetics, communication, expression, usability, integration and social ties, and impact of politics and economics. It focuses on the set of events that caused for example simplification and commodification of music, also musical weariness and apathy, as well as the weakening of social bonds and isolation.
