The method is described of conservation o f the banners o f Silesian insurgents and guilds, preserved at the museums in Chorzów and Tarnowskie Góry. The banners usually consist of w separate parts put together. They are fringed on three sides, the fourth being provided with ringlets. In the central part there is usually the state emblem and, on the other side, an image o f the Virgin Mary with the Infant Jesus. Around it there is an inscription giving the name of the mine or guild, the date o f foundation of the banner, etc. The figures in the images and the letters of the inscription are often embroidered. During the Second World War the banners discussed were being hidden from the Nazis and preserved under improper conditions. Hence the need for their conservation. The author describes in greater detail her work on conservation o f the said banners. Its first stage consisted in clearing the banner concerned of dust, dirt, rubbish, particles of earth and mould, the non-alcalic washing agents having been used for the purpose. Then the fabric of the banner was doubled with a layer o f another, adequately dyed material. All the preserved fragments o f the old fabric were secured against further decay and laid on doubling fabric. Oil paintings was protected from peeling off and crumbling.
