The author of the article has analyzed protocols (files) of the general chapters as well as protocols from visitations to monasteries of the Canons Regular of the Lateran (CRL) in the Kraków Province between 1781 and 1861. The protocols are currently in the archives of the Pauline Fathers in Częstochowa (ms. 253 and ms. 254), where they were placed after the dissolution of monasteries ordered by the Russian authorities following the January Uprising. This article centers on topics related to music which are present in the documents mentioned above. The author identified the following four topics: A) music books serving in the liturgy, B) music instruments, especially organs and bells. Several dozen notes in both manuscripts demonstrate concern of the Canons Regular for the quality of music in their monasteries.

Autor zanalizował protokoły (akta) kapituł generalnych i protokoły wizytacji klasztorów kanoników regularnych laterańskich (CRL) prepozytury krakowskiej z lat 1781-1861. Autor wyodrębnił dwa zagadnienia: A) księgi muzyczne służące liturgii, B) instrumenty muzyczne, zwłaszcza organy i dzwony.

In the article the author attempts to make a holistic investigation on the role of church choirs. The starting point is a statement that basically church choirs are considered to be religious groups, determined by specific tasks in the liturgy. The author highlights that it is essential for both a conductor and a choir to be aware of the fact that they have a liturgical role, which significantly influences the choice of the repertoire, a way of performing as well as a location of the choir and even choristers’ behavior and outfit. There are two areas in which a church choir can be qualified: liturgical qualification and aesthetical qualification. The first one considers an answer to the question: “what to sing” and the second one “how to sing” (aesthetic qualities). Both kinds of qualification are equally obligatory for each of the church choirs. Answering the question posed in the title of the article: “Is it only singing?” the author tries to justify that singing itself does not cover all the church choir’s tasks. It is significant to link singing with education, up-bringing and forming. A church choir is a school (schola cantorum), where choristers gain necessary musical knowledge and technical skills enabling performing songs properly, they learn a suitable behavior, which is described as “way of being” in the society they live in, they also obtain necessary religious and liturgical formation in order to make their liturgical tasks a source of “spiritual well-being”. While finishing the dissertation on the church choirs’ tasks, the author associates his thesis with Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger’s reflection, which can be fully referred to church choir’s tasks. He considers that each musical service can be treated as a liturgical service and if so, each church choir’s service is a form of “pastorial ministry” which is why it is considered as “a kind of the apostolate and serves as a way to build community”.

St. Thomas Aquinas integrated into Christian thought the rigours of Aristotle’s philosophy. His aesthetics, although connected with his theology and ethics, has not always received sufficient attention. Certain passages of his Summa Theologiae are devoted to beauty. Aquinas defines beauty in Aristotelian terms as that which pleases solely in the contemplation of it and recognizes three prerequisites of beauty: perfection, appropriate proportion and clarity. His basic ideas, drawn from the classical world, are modified in the light of Christian theology and developments in metaphysics and optics during 13th century. Music is touched upon in his writings. He looks at the concrete applications of the conception of transcendental beauty in his theory of music. Author considers Thomas’s idea of music in the following ways: beauty as a way of meeting God; church music as a religious virtue; liturgical music; St. Thomas as a “cantor of the Eucharistic Christ”. Thomas considers objective value and goodness of music, addressing its physical nature and metaphysical properties, such as in the hymns of the office of Corpus Christi attributed to Thomas’s faith and theological wisdom.

The subject of this article is an organist’s formation in the Diocese of Koszalin-Kołobrzeg in the light of the law concerning this issue. The attempt is to present the diocese rules concerning the organists’ preparation and their ministry. Moreover, there are some examples that show the practical realization of these rules ( for example through the establishing of the Diocesan Study Centre for Organists) To reach this aim, questionnaires were framed to make possible to collect information about the ministry and formation of an organist in the Diocese of Koszalin-Kołobrzeg. The questionnaire was conducted in 2010/2011 among parish priests and organists. The author of this article hopes that the undertaken topic of an organists’ formation be, at least to some extent, helpful to better the organists’ qualifications and exclude, if necessary, all misuses or deficiency.
The knowledge of organ literature devoted to native composers leaves much to be desired. If they even perform solo organ music at liturgy, contemporary church organists often reach for the works of grand European masters, forgetting about the Polish reservoir of sacral pieces. An old proverb “the grass is greener on the other side of the fence” is an accurate description of the state of knowledge of young (and the older) organists on Polish organ music. Why is therefore Polish sacral organ literature so important for the contemporary church musician? Most importantly because, in the Roman Catholic church liturgy, “compositions based on church songs shall (i.e. are) desirable”.As early as in the 16th century, church song was used by the Polish composers as the melodic material for the organ pieces they composed. The first church compositions were created through adapting vocal pieces to the purposes of key music. Some of the most prominent examples include e.g. 16th-century Polish music monuments – John of Lublin Tabulator of 1540, The Saint Ghost Monastery Tabulator of 1548 and the Warsaw Music Society Tabulator from approx. 1580. The turn of the 18th and the 19th century in Europe and in Poland displays a secularization of organ music, influenced by the spread of the Naples school. Secular and opera elements influence church music, which gradually develops utilitarian properties. It is worth to remember that the Polish religious oeuvre is the contribution of Polish organists-virtuosos, often great improvisers, with extensive professional practice. The first creators of this literature were church organists, active on many a musical platform, composers, organizers of music life and university professors. This family of authors includes: Władysław Żeleński, Stefan Surzyński, Mieczysław Surzyński, Feliks Nowowiejski, Walenty Dec, Wincenty Rychling, Kazimierz Garbusiński, Feliks Rączkowski, Józef Furmanik, as well as the following priests: Gustaw Roguski, Józef Surzyński, Franciszek Walczyński, Antoni Chlondowski, or Idzi Ogierman-Mański. Also contemporary organists, such as Marian Sawa, Tadeusz Machl, or Jan Janca have been composing in this spirit. The author of this publication attempts at presenting the Polish organ music oeuvre, to be applied in the Roman Catholic church liturgy. Performing a division into applied music (as presented in the 1st part of the article) and concert music, the artist is aware that “we cannot make a precise classification into applied music (both didactic and church music) and concert music, since applied pieces contain numerous elaborate forms with grand artistic ambitions, played both in church and in the concert room”.Due to the specific character and sometimes not the top-notch artistic rank, organ music surely has as many advocates as it has opponents. Most of all, it will surely be found useful by church musicians who are less advanced in organ play and the art of improvisation, who seek support in the form of short, non-complex pieces applied in the post-council Roman Catholic liturgy.

Znajomość literatury organowej rodzimych kompozytorów nadal pozostawia wiele do życzenia. Należy tu wymienić m.in.: XVI-wieczne zabytki muzyki polskiej – Tabulaturę Jana z Lublina z roku 1540, Tabulaturę klasztoru Św. Gustawa Roguskiego, ks.
Through music people can fully express their feelings and emotions, even the ones of religious nature. Therefore, music is an inseparable part of the liturgy in the Christian Church. The music used during religious ceremonies is aimed at praising God and blessing the faithful. This goal will be accomplished only when the rules referring to sacred music are followed. These rules are found in the documents formed by the Church legislation. The Letter to Artists by St. John Paul II plays the vital role among the regulations. It can be treated as a kind of invitation sent to all people of art, so music as well, to join in the dialogue with the Church. The following article presents the tasks given authors and performers of worship music by the Church, in the context of the message conveyed in the Letter to Artists. Pope writes about their responsibility. At the same time he expresses a wish as far as the beauty they create is concerned. Namely, he wants that beauty to evoke admiration among the next generations.
In every music age there occurred a certain kind of modernity which brought about the development of musical language. However, modernity as understood these days occurred more or less at the beginning of the 20th century, particularly in painting. It was initiated by the painting movement known as Dadaism. The artists who created this movement often followed nihilism. Dadaism turned into a new movement called surrealism. Its representatives were, among others, Salvador Dali, Giorgio de Chirico, Max Ernst, Marcel Duchamp. This movement was also characterised by artists’ rebellion against the traditional conception of beauty and art. A similar rebellion in music did not follow until the end of the 1950s in the form of avant‑garde tendencies, which brought about the breakdown of the traditional approach to music creation. At that time liturgical music maintained its traditional musical language, which showed results in the form of a bigger disintegration of the church and culture. In his book A song for the Lord Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger raises and analyses these phenomena, which makes the book a splendid title to solve those problems. An excellent lodestar for the authors of not only liturgical music is A letter to artists by saint John Paul II, in which the author raises the sense of artistic work. The letter is also a kind of a bridge between the creator of contemporary art and the church. One may also try applying certain modern composer techniques in liturgy, with particular consideration of the ones that concern concertina and musical scales (e.g. Messiaen scales). However, it should be done very carefully so as not to disturb experiencing liturgy by the faithful.

Artyści, którzy go tworzyli, nierzadko kierowali się nihilizmem. Dadaizm przerodził się w nowy kierunek, zwany surrealizmem. Jego przedstawicielami byli m.in. Salvador Dali, Giorgio de Chirico, Max Ernst, Marcel Duchamp.
The article is a brief review and summary of the activities of the Association of Polish Church Musicians since its establishment in 2001 until the 16th congress in September 2015.

The choice of musical repertoire for the celebration of the sacramentof marriage has become the subject of more frequent and widespreaddiscussions. Media publications on the subject which provide suggestions forthe choice published in the media and promoted cultural solutions for musicattest to the existence of a problem and the urgent need to arrive at someform of resolution. In this article, the issue of music and songs at churchweddings is presented in three parts: the first clarifies the existing problem;the second shows the cultural factors which have led to the existence of theproblem; the third part demonstrates the urgent need to formulate a rightfulsolution regarding the choice of music within the context of Christian liturgy.Suggestions for this choice put forward in the mass media, together withcurrent cultural trends, do not always advocate appropriate choices. The guidelines given to the bridal couple in order to assist them intheir choice of music should always be in keeping with liturgical law.The rules and regulations which govern liturgical law lead to a deeperunderstanding among the faithful of the true meaning of sacramentalrituals and their Christian significance. Consequently, they can never besubject to personal taste alone. Observance of these regulations ensuresthe Christian authenticity of the liturgy as ordained by Christ and theChristian community, and it enhances the aesthetic aspect; indeed, everybridal couple wishes their nuptial Mass to be beautiful. Consequently, theyshould be made acquainted with the Church’s teaching on liturgical musicalsettings. Adherence to prescribed norms not only guarantees the essentialholiness of the liturgical celebration, but also ensures that their sanctity isnot undermined, and allows for inclusive participation in the liturgy.
The purpose of the article – in which its author raises a subject of the meaning Catholic Church liturgy’s religious song – is to introduce the genesis and development of religious song concept in Catholic Church, with special consideration of ecclesial legislation that are currently in force in that field. The most important church documents and – as past as present – all popes teaching, which are analyzed in the article, express a concern for liturgy music, which aim is – by its beauty – to connect people to God and be an integral part of the liturgy. At the same time, it is noticeable that folk songs, that were enjoined to perform rather beyond Holy Mass in the past, are in continued development now. Nowadays, folk songs pose a common norm and immanent part of every Holy Mass. The article raises also the problems with terminology and performing the religious songs during the liturgical services, and finally, the manners of improvement of this current, far from ideal situation.

The Cecilian movement, present especially in Germany in the 2nd half of the 19th c., became visible also in Polish lands. In this context, generally few names are mentioned: Eugeniusz Gruberski, Józef Surzyński, Wacław Gieburowski and Antoni Chlondowski. However, there were more people involved in improving the state of church music. In this article two priests active in Mazovia at the same time are referred to: Bronisław Maryański and German Grabowski. Both of them were engaged in educational activities, by publishing articles for organists. Comparing both authors’ positions on liturgical music, a conclusion can be drawn that the Cecilians, in principle, agreed among themselves, but their views differed on practical issues.
For nearly 60 years, music in churches has been changing its form. Today’s way of celebration liturgy in Silesian churches, as well as in Church in overall, is mainly influenced by the teaching of the Second Vatican Council. Conciliar postulates referring to church music, which were included in the “Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy” became the impetus for a series of measures and actions aimed at enrichment and making the Silesian tradition of church singing more beautiful. The article is an attempt to describe to what extent the post-conciliar demands were reflected in the parishes of the deanery Kuźnia Raciborska, which belongs to the Diocese of Gliwice. Image of the liturgical music in the described deanery will be presented in three thematic groups: church musicians who are responsible for the shape of liturgical music, their musical and liturgical formation, the presence of choirs, as well as the technical condition and sound quality of organ. In addition to the above described issues, the author also makes an attempt to describe the overall picture of the musical life of the deanery Kuźnia Raciborska. Analysis of the theme and conclusions drawn in this article are based on the empirical data (surveys), and on the basis of own research.
Research on Gregorian chant in Poland is necessary to establish the origin, specificity and the uniqueness of the Polish musical culture which grew on the foundation of the European artistic creation. Tracing the development of the Gregorian chant in Poland is also of great interest on account of its impact on other forms of sacred music which develop in our country already since the 14th century. Furthermore, this research has another significance as well, namely complement- ing the general musicological literature with information contained in Polish medieval sources. The reason for this is that Western European publications sometimes present our medievalistic culture in a one-sided manner without taking into account the results of research of Polish musicologists in this field. Source analyses of Polish medieval liturgical manuscripts are of a particular importance these days as only a tiny percentage of their former corpus has survived in Poland. That is undeniably evidenced by the information provided in early library inventories and records from bishops’ visitations. The subject matter of this paper is focused on the physical description of the three- volume Jan Olbracht Gradual. In dealing with this issue, I used heuristcs, the method commonly used in the first stage of source analyses. The paper begins with presenting the subject literature. Afterward, it contains the physical description of the codex, comprising the circumstances and the date of production of the gradual, book format, bindings’ description of all three volumes, writing material, internal structure of the books’ blocks and their losses, foliation, additions and palimpsest, and also the state of preservation. The last section of the paper is dedicated to the paleographic analysis focused on the issues such as: the visual aspect of the leaf, textual and musical script, and decoration.

The Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy draws attention to the treasury, which the musical heritage of the Church is, and encourages to give this treasury a due care. Among the gems this musical treasure of the People of God contains, at the first place is a Gregorian chant, named by the Fathers of Vatican II as its own singing of the Roman liturgy. This document has expressed a great concern of the Church so as not to lose the great music within the space of our churches, this music that deserves to be called art. Hereby the Constitution on the Liturgy belongs to the teaching of the Church which emphasizes the role of music. This teaching has been introduced in the twentieth century by Pope Pius X in his Motu Proprio Inter pastoralis officii sollicitudines, issued November 22, 1903. In this document qualities of sacred music were identified, which are holiness, universality and perfection of form. In the light of this document these qualities are possessed, above all, by the Gregorian chant and the classic polyphony. In this way we can see how tremendously important was quality of the art of music in the liturgy for the church at the beginning of twentieth century. Unfortunately we are still far from these ideals. Joseph Ratzinger in an interview conducted by Vittorio Messori, sadly observes that the place of great musical art has been taken by songs easy and fashionable. It has happened so, as the Cardinal noticed, to make liturgy allegedly more understandable and accessible to all. The Cardinal emphatically emphasizes that the affordability of the liturgy does not mean the immediate intelligibility of trivial matters. The way of understanding the liturgy is the way of intellectual and spiritual development. It can not to be that under the guise of making the liturgy more understandable, also with the help of music, we trivialize it. This happens, when we allow to enter the space of liturgy banality with easy and fashionable songs. The diagnosis of the Prefect of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith of that time remains valid, although 30 years have passed since its producing. In many ecclesial communities easy and fashionable songs are still performed and promoted instead of musical art. The Cardinal warns that the Church confining to this kind of music falls into incompetence and becomes useless. Referring to the Roman Singer, Benedict XVI points to the relationship between vitality of the of faith and the vitality of culture which was born from the faith. The dying musical culture of the Church is seen in this light as an ominous sign of the agony of faith in human hearts. Recalling the story of the conversion of St. Augustine, Benedict XVI notes that one of the factors that prompted the heart of later bishop of Hippo to embrace the faith, it was the beauty of music resounding in Milan at the time of Saint Ambrose. Great, full of artistry, music is characterized by the power which can induce people to conversion. The music, in Ratzinger’s understanding, is also an eloquent apology for the Church's history, next to the saints’ testimonies of lives. The Cardinal points also to the full dynamic force which lifts man to God in a beauty of musical art. In his views Joseph Ratzinger often emphasizes the cosmic dimensions of the liturgy, which is reflected in the singing of Sanctus. This cosmic dimension in which we leave our meager groups for a great community including heaven and earth, can be attributed only to great artistic music, not to easy and fashionable songs. Cardinal Ratzinger offers firm criticism of aesthetic elitism, which by making music art for art's sake restricts access for a small group of listeners, as well as of pastoral pragmatism, which by turning toward easy and fashionable songs makes music a merchandise on demand and the musical epitome of kitsch, making the church trivialize the faith. Joseph Ratzinger indicates that the reform of the liturgy introduced by Vatican II aimed at an interior renewal, based on deeper awareness and fuller meeting with God. The music serves this renewal only if it is a real art. Therefore we need to take care about such music because thanks to it the work of revival of the liturgy is still continued.

Niestety wciąż daleko nam do tych ideałów. Ów kosmiczny wymiar, w którym wychodzimy z naszych mizernych grupek w wielką wspólnotę obejmującą niebo i ziemię, można przypisać jedynie wielkiej artystycznej muzyce, nie zaś „łatwym i modnym pioseneczkom”.
The organ work of Jehan Titelouze has considerable meaning in developement of organ music in France. His two books: Hymnes de l’Eglise pour toucher sur l’orgue, avec les fugues et recherches sur leur plain-chant (1623) and Le Magnificat, ou cantique de la Vierge pour toucher sur l’orgue, suivant les huit tons de l’Eglise (1626) are a great testimony of french organ music at the beginnig of XVIIth century. Titelouze is considered both a traditionalist and an innovator. His organ style is firmly rooted in the structures and the compositional techniques of the renaissance polyphony. The significant inspiration for Titelouze was a new invented type of organ. This article presents an outline of the history of shaping communio chants (one of the Proprium Missae chants for Communion): from Christian antiquity (Cyril of Jerusalem, John Chrysostom, Apostolic Constitutions), through the Middle Ages (Ordo Romanus Primus), the post-Tridentine period (Communiones totius anni by Mikołaj Zieleński), to the reform of the Second Vatican Council, to which we owe the collection of antiphonae ad communionem (Graduale romanum, Graduale Simplex, Missale romanum, Ordo Cantus Missae) in liturgical books, and indirectly also contemporary chants and songs intended for the communionprocession.

Artykuł niniejszy ukazuje zarys dziejów kształtowania się śpiewu communio (jeden ze śpiewów Proprium Missae przeznaczony na Komunię): od starożytności chrześcijańskiej (Cyryl Jerozolimski, Jan Chryzostom, Konstytucje Apostolskie), poprzez epokę średniowiecza (Ordo Romanus Primus), okres potrydencki (Communiones totius anni Mikołaja Zieleńskiego), aż po reformę Soboru Watykańskiego II, której zawdzięczamy kolekcję znajdujących się w księgach liturgicznych antiphonae ad communionem (Graduale romanum, Graduale Simplex, Missale romanum, Ordo Cantus Missae), a pośrednio również współczesnych śpiewów i pieśni, przeznaczonych na procesję komunijną.
This article is an attempt to recall the history, significance and functionality of an ofertorium, as one of the variable chants of the Mass (Proprium Missae). Since Christian ancient times it accompanied the preparation and bringing of the offer to the altar. The ofertorium has undergone a long evolution as a form of liturgical chant: from a short antiphon in directum connected with the lines of psalms, to an extensive form, multi-part with a developed melody rich in intricate melismatic music. The author of this article presents the cycles of ofertoria in the history of sacral polyphony (Orlando di Lasso, Giovanni P. da Palestrina), with a special consideration of Ofertoria totius anni by Mikołaj Zieleński (died after 1615) – a composer, organist, head of the music ensemble of the Primate of Poland Wojciech Baranowski. Theconclusion of the presented study focuses on the Mass ofertoria (antiphons ad offertorium) in the post-Council (Vaticanum II) Church documents (Ordo Cantus Missae, Graduale Simplex) as well as ad ofertorium liturgical chants arising from them (J. Gélineau, S. Ziemiański).

Od starożytności chrześcijańskiej towarzyszył on przygotowaniu i przyniesieniu darów do ołtarza.
