Jednym z wymiarów wielkiej zmiany społecznej i kulturowej zapoczątkowanej w roku 1989 pod hasłem modernizacji Polski i jej okcydentalizacji jest zmiana tożsamości religijnej i narodowej Polaków. Przez ostatnie dwa wieki kształtowania się nowoczesnego narodu były one tak splecione, iż traktowano je synonimicznie. Problem ma wymiar historyczny i teoretyczny zarazem. Historyczny bo splątana tożsamość Polaka-katolika odnosi do szczególnej sytuacji narodu, jak wobec upadku swej państwowości szukał możliwości narodowego samookreślenia i tożsamości w kulturze. Teoretyczny, ponieważ należy odnieść się do tych teorii socjologicznych, które postrzegają religię jako korelat narodowej tożsamości i jako wartość rdzenną narodowej kultury. A także takich, które kładą nacisk na nieuchronność procesów sekularyzacji i laicyzacji jako swoistych progów nowoczesności.

One of the dimension to the great social and cultural change started in 1989 in Poland under the banner of modernization and westernization was the change of re-ligious and national identity of Poles. For the last two centuries of the modern nation the religious and national identity of Poles became so close that they were considered as one. This issue has a theoretical and an historical aspect. The theoretical aspect refers to sociological theories perceiving religion as a correlate of national identity and a core value of national culture. The practical aspect emphasizes the inevitability of the process of secularization as a threshold to modernity.
